Thank you for your interest in our University

and particularly in our Faculty. The Faculty

of Social Sciences was established in 2003

and consequently it is a young and dynamic

faculty of Eötvös Loránd University, the most

prestigious university in Hungary.

The Faculty of Social Sciences is the country’s largest social science educa-

tion centre with numerous internationally recognised lecturers. We offer 5

bachelor programmes for undergraduates and 11 master programmes for

graduate students who can continue their academic studies on three doc-

toral programmes in the Faculty’s Doctoral School of Sociology.

The academic work of our faculty members combines approaches from the

social and natural sciences, and we place particular emphasis on provid-

ing equal support for academic and practical activities. For students and

scholars who like to study or carry out research in an environment where

multidisciplinary and innovative approaches are highly appreciated, join-

ing the community of the Faculty of Social Sciences is the perfect choice.

U N I V E R S I T Y

Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) was founded

in 1635 in the city of Nagyszombat by Cardi-

nal Péter Pázmány as a catholic university for

teaching theology and philosophy.

In 1777 the University was transferred to Buda,

and in the second half of the 19th century it devel-

oped into a centre of modern higher educa-

tion, covering many disciplines. In 1950 it was

named after one of its professors, the world-

famous physicist, Loránd Eötvös.

Today Eötvös Loránd University is internation-

ally recognised and has strong professional

connections all over the world. The diplomas

issued by the university are acknowledged

worldwide, and its course credits are trans-

ferable in all countries in the European Union.

The University offers more than 50 foreign lan-

guage programmes in various disciplines at all

academic levels. Students arrive from all over

the world to attend these programmes.

The history of the Faculty of Social Sciences began

in the 1960s when a sociology research group was

created at the Faculty of Humanities of Eötvös Loránd

University. Later the research group was transformed

into a department, and the first undergraduate courses

started in 1972.

In 1982 the Institute of Sociology and Social Policy was

established, and the number of students grew contin-

uously during the 1980s and 1990s. In 2003, the Insti-

tute was joined by other departments of the University

to form the Faculty of Social Sciences. In thirty years

it has evolved from a Sociology Department which was

merely tolerated by the socialist regime into a Faculty

covering the whole spectrum of the social sciences.

Currently students can choose from a wide range of

disciplines and from an array of programmes at all lev-

els, in addition to an increasing number of courses

taught in English. Our range of courses is continuously

expanding in line with changing needs and labour

market requirements.

Currently the Faculty of Social Sciences has 14 departments in 6 instituitions:

The Faculty has nearly 2000 students and an academic staff of approxi-

mately 100 lecturers and researchers.

Research A T T H E F A C U LT Y

Staff at ELTE’s Faculty of Social Sciences have recently taken part in numer-

ous Hungarian and international research projects. These include:

– Human rights in the EU: The Institute for Political and International

Studies is working on the “Fostering Human Rights Among European

Policies” (FRAME) project (2013-2017) together with 18 organisations

from outside Hungary. The researchers are investigating how funda-

mental principles of human rights are implemented in the EU’s internal

affairs and foreign policy.

– Cultural identity, diversity, and political change: The “EUinDepth”

research project (2014-18) brings together 8 European universities and

research centres (including the Faculty’s Doctoral School of Sociology)

and 7 participating institutions from the Russian Federation. The staff

exchange programme strengthens the complementarity of the partici-

pants involved and boosts collaborative research activities.

As part of the University’s internationalisation programme, it is a prior-

ity for the Faculty of Social Sciences to involve teachers and students

in various forums on the international stage. Bilateral agreements help

to strengthen students’ and teachers’ links with foreign universities.

Between 2010 and 2015 there were 61 such agreements in place with

higher education institutions abroad.

Degree: Ethnic and Minority Policy Expert

The ELTE Ethnic and Minority Studies Programme

(ELTE MSP) is an international two-year postgradu-

ate MA programme which was established in 1993.

It is a special interdisciplinary educational pro-

gramme that aims to create an international com-

munity of students and lecturers. A core strength

of the programme lies in a coordinated approach

whereby theory, applied research, and interven-

tion skills are joined together to provide a unique

academic ‘training-ground’ for future minority pol-

icy experts. Extra-curricular activities have been

designed to place students on various internships

where they become acquainted with real-life minor-

ity situations to introduce students to an active

research culture in a supportive environment.

The increase in migration and the simultaneous

growth in xenophobia contribute to a pressing

need in Central and Eastern Europe and in the Bal-

kans for highly-trained professionals who have the

insight and expertise to identify the main social

and psychological reasons behind tensions and

discrimination, and who are also equipped with

the skills and techniques to handle and moderate

these conflicts. A key objective of the Programme

is therefore to provide the expertise necessary for

this within Europe. However, much of the research

analysis and scientific methods are also relevant

for those who study ethnic/race/majority-minority

relations elsewhere in the world.

Type of programme: Full-time & part-time degree programme*, in English


Degree: Expert in Health Care Policy, Planning and Financing

Specialisation: Health Economics

The MSc in Health Policy, Planning and Financing is unique in Central

and Eastern Europe. It equips students with the basic knowledge offered

on similar programmes in Western Europe, but it also allows students

to apply their knowledge and specific analytical skills in the context of low

and middle-income countries.

The specialisation in Health Economics, launched in English, offers multi-

disciplinary expertise and a problem-orientated approach. Such knowl-

edge and skills will remain relevant in the long run and help graduates

understand and analyse key issues relating to the healthcare systems

of the future. These include the efficiency of health technologies, sustaina-

bility of health financing, and techniques to measure and influence the per-

formance of healthcare systems.

*From September 2016 the MSc programme can be completed as a 2-year part-time programme, too. The part-

time programme is especially tailored for those who already have working experience and would like to further

develop their knowledge and skills without giving up their working position. The contact hours of the course are

organised in three educational weeks in each semester . One week (Monday to Saturday) presence is required per

month in each month from September to November (first semester) and from February to April (second semester).

The MSc in Health Policy, Planning and Financing prepares students for

careers in both the private and public sectors. These include healthcare

governance and financing at the national and local level as well as careers

at pharmaceutical companies, public and private healthcare providers and

education and research institutions. Foreign students studying at Hungar-

ian medical universities may choose to combine their medical degree with

the degree offered by our programme.

The programme aims to train a new generation of scientists dedicated

to sociology and the social sciences and equip them with the necessary

skills to acquire a PhD qualification, carry out independent academic

research and lecture at postgraduate level.

There are several key strengths of this PhD programme. The Department has

links at several universities abroad and in addition to being compatible with

international social science doctoral programmes, the PhD programme also

gives students the opportunity to study abroad for short periods of time.

We offer a research-orientated training programme, which is interdiscipli-

nary in nature and combines quantitative and qualitative methods.

The Postgraduate Specialist Training Course is an interdisciplinary one-

year programme that focuses on the study of international human rights

from both a theoretical and practical perspective. Students take courses

offered by the European Studies Department, as well as human rights

courses offered by other departments of the ELTE Faculty of Social

Sciences, such as Cultural Anthropology, Political Sciences, and Sociol-

ogy. It is a part-time correspondence course. We welcome those who wish

to pursue a career in international human rights, for instance those who

plan to go on UN peacekeeping and/or political mission trips, or those

who work for governmental or non-governmental organisations dealing

with human rights issues.

The Faculty of Social Sciences runs a mentoring system for inter-

national students. International students can therefore request and

receive assistance even before they arrive. The direct relationship

between the mentor and the student means that problems can be

addressed on an individual and personalised basis.

The University is more than just an educational insti-

tution. It is also a creative community which plays

a decisive role in people’s careers. Our Faculty

views future social science professionals as active

individual thinkers. We do not just want our stu-

dents to listen, we also want their voices to be heard

both within and beyond the university walls and

community life in the Faculty very much reflects this.

Teachers and students at the Faculty of Social

Sciences regularly organise joint conferences,

film clubs, academic discussions and debates,

often inviting renowned Hungarian and interna-

tional researchers and key figures. These events

allow students to get to know each other’s cul-

tural backgrounds.

Students participating in our English-language

programmes also enjoy the benefits of being a mem-

ber of the ELTE community. This includes sport-

ing opportunities at the University’s athletic facili-

ties, the services of the country’s largest university

library, and numerous other benefits.

The Faculty of Social Sciences – as well as the Faculty of Science and the

Faculty of Informatics – is housed in the modern buildings on the “Lágy-

mányos Campus” situated on the banks of the Danube, in the southern part

of Budapest. The Lágymányos Campus consists of two buildings: the

North Building (Északi Tömb) at Pázmány Péter sétány 1/A and the South

Building (Déli Tömb) at Pázmány Péter sétány 1/C. The buildings are acces-
