ENHANCING THE WORSHIP SERVICE

“Make A Joyful Noise Unto The Lord”

PRESENTER: Florine Pernell Herron

Ms. Herron is presently Minister of Music for the Eighth Episcopal District, African Methodist Episcopal Church (Louisiana & Mississippi) and the Minister of Music at Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church, Slidell, LA. She established Florimusic Studios in 1999 where she gives music instruction, and records. In addition, she is a composer, arranger and publisher.

Ms. Herron’s academic preparation began with a BS in Music Education (Organ/Oboe) at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA in 1973. While at Duquesne University Ms. Herron was Chapel organist utilizing the pipe organ in the Chapel. She went on to Illinois State University at Normal Illinois and received a MM ED/MA in 1975.

Hs. Herron has many publications. She has published piano, organ, violin, guitar and keyboard method books. Along with original songs for mixed

choirs, she has published a hymnology resource book. One her most satisfying compositions was music for St. Tammany Parish Heritage Festival in May of 1997.

Often asked for, Ms. Herron conducts several Gospel and Hymnology workshops in any given year. Friendship is truly blessed to have such a talented musician, teacher, composer and publisher to conduct our first annual music workshop.

ABOUT THE “SESSIONS”Friday Evening

Scripture And Hymns Biblical Facts influenced hymn writers, and through their personal experiences and strong faith, and desire to express themselves, lyrics were written and hymns were composed. The workshop attendee will learn of the associated scriptures and Biblical applications relating to the hymn.

Hymn Placement In The Worship Service Consideration and selection should be made to effectively establish an environment for worship and praise for the following categories: introits, processional, hymn of praise (opening hymn), prayer chant, altar call, offering and

recessional. The proper application of morning and evening hymns should also be considered and implemented.

Choral Rapport With The Congregation The choir leads the congregation effectively when the voice parts, text and rhythmic patterns are sung properly, and levels of dynamics are varied. The choir members must also show belief and excitement with their singing. They are conveying the writer/composer’s message…painting a musical picture to prepare for worship throughout the Service.

How To Properly Sing Hymns The hymn should be sung with understanding, conviction and with enthusiasm. Diction and phrasing are also an important component in the musical delivery (performance) of the hymn.

The Partnership Of The Hymn To The Preached Word The Minister of Music/Director of Music should work with the Pastor (if he/she so desires) and coordinate hymns that are supportive to the scripture, sermon topic, and liturgical calendar.

The Director and Accompanist’s Responsibilities The director leads the choir, interprets the hymn, and ‘fine tunes’ voice sections. He or she should be able to retrieve the melody if lost, and work very closely with the accompanist in keeping the hymn functional and effective.
