vation in its product range. In 2012, we shall be taking part in over 50 exhibitions and introducing 22 new products. These include, to mention but a few, the intro-duction of the maXYmos TL, an expansion of our successful family of force-dis place-ment monitors, and the further deve lop-ment of engine indicator sensors for con-tinuous operation in large engines.

Tough technological challenges make us better and stronger. Together with our customers, we intend to continue rising to these challenges in the future.

Rolf SondereggerCEO Kistler GroupRolf Sonderegger

Over recent years, Kistler has developed from being a sensor specialist into a sys-tem provider. The economic success of the Group confi rms that this was the right strategy. As a system provider and deve-lopment partner, proximity to the cus tomer is absolutely crucial for us. Moving into the new Kistler Tech Center in Detroit is a major step in this direction. The Kistler Tech Center in Germany is already up and running and the Shanghai center will be inaugurated this spring. Others will follow in Tokyo (Japan) and Pune (India) in due course. This will enable us not only to ex-tend the range of our services, – including particularly calibration and rental equip-ment – but will also put us in a position to offer customer specifi c systems.

Our pursuit of customer proximity has led us to adapt our structures to the mar-kets with effect from the beginning of 2012, our organization being divided into three independent Divisions: the Auto-motive Research & Test Division is res-ponsible for applications in the fi eld of engine development and vehicle testing. The Industrial Process Control Division is in charge of quality assurance on the manufacturing side and Sensor Techno-logy, the smallest of the three divisions, is concerned with the further development of sensors for a variety of applications.

Product Development and Marketing are already assigned to the divisions. In a second stage, Sales will be organized on a divisional basis to ensure that our pro- duct range is even more specifi cally adap- ted to market requirements.

OutlookRising to the Challenge

In 2011, the Kistler Group also achieved growth of more than 11%, a respectable result. Meanwhile, as our order book has progressed even more positively, the available production capacities have been stretched to the limit so that, in the course of 2012, we will be gradually ex-panding our capacities. The new factory under construction in the Stuttgart region will be inaugurated late this summer and this will enable us to comply in full with our own self-imposed standards for fast delivery times.

In the typical medium-sized undertaking, the employees are not seen merely as a factor of production. They should rather be provided with the opportunity to be-come fully involved in the company. That is why we can't afford to hire any but the best. In 2011, the Group created 85 new jobs, bringing our workforce up to 1 050 full-time equivalent worldwide. During the year in progress, we are planning to create a further 100 jobs.

Let us turn fi nally – and most importantly – to innovation and new products. For over 50 years, Kistler has been differentiating itself from the competition through inno-

Automotive Research & TestEver More Precise, Ever Better

The Automotive Research & Test Division develops products to optimize and regulate internal combustion engines, as well as to ensure a more comfortable ride and improve vehicle safety. Get Better. With Kistler.

Safety and EnvironmentWe Make Mobility Cleaner and Safer

Hitherto undreamed of progress has been achieved in reducing the fuel con-sumption and pollutant emissions of internal combustion engines. As a result, pollutants content of the exhaust gas of many of the latest engines is less than that of the primary air which went in. Contributing to this development, Kistler sensors have played an indispensable role in the understanding of the combus-tion process.

At Kistler, we are striving for further improvements through the development of ever more precise sensors and analy-

tical tools. These are instrumental in increasing engine performance in motor racing. In the fi eld of marine and large stationary engines, the transition to closed loop control of the combustion process is within sight. The crucial factors now are the service life and cost of the sensors.

There is no doubt that cutting down vehicle weight is a sound approach to reducing fuel consumption. However, this in turn calls for even smarter solu-tions in order to meet the needs of pas-sen ger comfort and driving dynamics. In this regard, the Kistler portfolio of wheel force sensors and optical speed and displacement sensors provides the perfect support.

When it comes to safety, Kistler sensors and measuring systems make a vital contribution to reducing hazards on the road. In addition, Kistler provides a whole range of services to support the en-gi neering teams of automotive industry.

In the coming years, there is going to be an unprecedented increase in the pace of technological progress. The outcome will depend on fast and accurate problem-solving. With our sensors, systems and solutions, the Automotive Research & Test Division not only provides the tools to do the job but also makes a vital contribution to reducing deve-lopment costs.

If our sensors for measuring com-bustion chamber pressure are already legendary, our systems today repre-sent the benchmark and our solutions make us a partner that customers know they can rely on.

In addition to our tried and tested product portfolio, we are setting up Tech Centers in all our main markets. This will enable us to remain close to our customers and to react to their needs with greater speed and fl exi bi-lity. At the same time, we shall be all the more able to meet special market and customer requirements.

Industrial Process ControlTop Quality – a Crucial Factor

The maXYmos FamilyA Milestone in Process Monitoring

It is only when sensors and process moni-tors are perfectly harmonized that you get a truly convincing system. The maXYmos family of monitors is Kistler's new solution for XY monitoring. The standard monitor for force and torque sensors is the maXYmos BL. The top of the range is the maXYmos TL, which offers a host of addi-tional features for particularly demanding tasks, such as in product testing. The basic functionality, operation, menu design, data structure and interfacing are standard for all monitors. Thanks to this new monitor family, a whole range of process monitoring tasks can be carried out with ease, all on the basis of Kistler's ultra-pre-cision sensors.

Kistler measuring solutions are also used in automo-bile manufacturing, providing a seamless monitoring of the production process that ensures perfect qua -lity and reduces production costs.

The Industrial Process Control Divi-sion brings together all of the acti-vities of the Kistler Group connected with the monitoring and control of industrial manufacturing processes. This Division is also responsible for developing and marketing the electromechanical actuator tech-nology for joining and testing pro-cesses.

The concentration of Kistler's manu-facturing technology know-how in a single unit makes available to the customer products that are even more optimized to industrial requirements (sensors, monitoring systems and joi- ning modules). The Division covers the entire industrial value chain. Kistler products are used in the primary shaping and forming processes, in the downstream joining and assembly technology and in the fi nal product testing. Thus, the Division provides manufacturing industry with a one-stop shop for all solutions in the fi eld of measurement and drive tech-nology.

The Division's sales and service orga-nization ensures that customers get optimum support fast wherever they may be in the world.

Sensor TechnologySensor Competence in Focus

Precision for SpaceIn-house Research for New Technologies

Kistler has a long tradition of innovation in the development of measurement tech-nology. Our in-house Research and Tech-nology is responsible for the culture of high temperature resistant PiezoStar® crystals.

In addition, new materials are developed and tested, sometimes in cooperation with external institutions, with the aim of fi nding new applications. In most cases, the improvements will not be apparent unless you happen to have studied the relevant data sheets. Every Kistler sensor has a unique type number and is indi-vidually calibrated in-house. For many years, Kistler has been specifying on

its data sheets the effective limit values obtained from type testing. This means that users know exactly what properties they can expect.

Within the new organization, we have brought all of the relevant process steps together under the same roof: sensor and electronics development, construction, building of the prototype, calibration

expertise and technological fundamentals. In this way, we are able to develop particularly high-performance piezoelectric measuring components with outstanding characteristics: high dynamics of the measurement range, overload safety and harmonization of the whole measuring chain for simple installation in the appli-cation.

Example of this is application in the struc-tural testing of satellites. The ESA Galileo satellites are to be used to set in place a European GPS system for timing, naviga-

tion and tracking by the middle of this decade. To this end, the fi rst two out of a total of 27 satellites have been placed in earth orbit by a rocket launcher. Kistler supplied the accelerometers for modal analysis as well as for shock and vibration testing of the satellites at Thales Alenia in Italy. Each satellite is fi tted with 150 to 200 sensors mounted either on the body, on valves or on antennae.

Our Division consists of three differ-ent units. In Product Lines, we deve-lop modular components such as small easy-to-install pressure sensors, multipurpose force sensors and accelerometers. In this international group, our actions are focused on clear objectives. In Strategic Business Fields, we combine the measure ment of forces in various components – a technology developed by Kistler that takes us to the limits of the physically possible. In Business Development, we deal with application solutions for completely new business fi elds, focusing on sensors for high pressure and high temperature measurement technology.

I am very happy to be able to contribute to expanding the basis of Kistler measurement technology, together with my colleagues in Buffalo and Winterthur.

Our aim is to offer partners and cus-tomers new opportunities for market development with the use of Kistler measurement technology.

The Kistler Group is a privately owned Swiss undertaking which produces sensors, electronic equipment and software for the solution of demanding measurement tasks. As a world leader in the market for dynamic measurement technology, the company invests around 10% p.a. of its sales on research and development.

Expansion 2012

Along with the introduction of a division-based structure, the Kistler Group has set itself two digits growth targets for the coming years. Two thirds of the projected growth in sales is to come from internal growth and one third from the acquisition of other companies.

A first milestone was achieved at the beginning of 2012 with the takeover of the business operation of Baewert Präzisions-Messtechnik GmbH in Meerane (D). This new Kistler Group site will now serve primarily for the manufacture of sensors and systems for large diesel engines.

Achievement of the projected growth will also require the corresponding plant and infrastructures. To this end, produc-tion capacities will be increased in the coming months through an extraordinary investment program. An important component of the expansion strategy is the new factory site in the Stuttgart region.

The Kistler Group consists of 25 Group companies. These are present worldwide at a total of 70 sites in 24 countries. Kistler products and solutions are distributed in a further 30 countries through selected representations.Total workforce as of January 2012: 1 050, including 450 in Switzerland.
