Sierre-Anniviers offers its guests expe-

stone’s throw from Chandolin, one of

the highest villages in Europe. Just some

of the highlights of this region in the

heart of Valais are the «imperial crown» -

five 4,000 m mountains (among them

the 4,505 mWeisshorn), picturesque,

old traditional villages, the St. LucAs-

tronomical Observatory perched high

in the mountains, close to the stars, the

astonishing Zinal Glacier grotto,Finges’

nature reserve where the wild Rhone

flows... Sierre-Anniviers is a holiday

turies of sun, glacier wine stored in

high mountain cellars, cow-fighting

in the mountain pastures, the fifes

and drums... traditions here are still

very much alive.

Sierre and the Val d’Anniviers are

firmly rooted in their architectural and

cultural heritage: the heritage of the

Anniviards, a semi-nomadic people

until the middle of the 20th century.

They had several homes and «moved»

between the valley and the mountain

pastures according to the seasons and

the work which needed doing. The

«inalpes» and «désalpes», the ascents and

descents to and from the mountain

pastures, are still occasions for proces-

sions and colourful celebrations today.

In the high mountain pastures, the

Hérens breed of cows fight for the title

of «queen», and these duels are enjoyed

by a very wide audience.The old villa-

ges, Grimentz, St-Jean andVercorin, to

name but a few, are the soul of today’s

resorts.The traditions and customs of

ancient Anniviards have their place in

museums: the «Maison du Remuage»

in Sierre and the Patois Museum in

Vissoie, whereas in St-Luc, the rye,

barley and wheat mills and the walnut

press still function today, just as they

did in times gone by.

Sierre e la val d’Anniviers sono radicate inun patrimonio architettonico e culturale for-te: quello degli anniviardi, semi-nomadi finoalla metà del 20o secolo. In possesso di sva-riate abitazioni, si spostavano tra la pianurae gli alpeggi al ritmo dei lavori e delle sta-gioni. I giorni di salita e di discesa dall’alpesono tuttora occasione di cortei e feste pie-ne di brio. All’alpe, le mucche della razza

d’Hérens combattono per imporsi da reginee le loro lotte sono molto apprezzate da unfolto pubblico. I vecchi villaggi, come peresempio Grimentz, St-Jean e Vercorin, sonol’anima delle stazioni attuali. Gli usi e i cos-tumi degli antichi anniviardi hanno i loromusei: la Casa della transumanza a Sierre,il Museo dei dialettanti a Vissoie, mentre aSt-Luc, i mulini per la segale e il frumento,il torchio per le noci e la macina per l’orzofunzionano come in passato.

The dry climate in the Sierre region

is famous for its health benefits, and

hundreds of kilometres of walking

paths at lower altitudes.

Resorts and hamlets bordering glaciers,

the choice is as rich as it is diverse.

Take a short stroll or a longer excur-

sion - to one of the 8Anniviers cabins,

for example.You can choose to be ac-

companied by a mountain guide who’ll

tell you all about the fauna and flora,

the secrets of plants and local tradi-

tions. It’s also possible to do a tour of

theVal d’Anniviers, a week-long trek

for serious walkers.Your bags will be

transported for you from one stop to the

next.The high altitude routes attract

many mountaineers and climbers here

in the land of the five 4,000 m peaks

(theWeisshorn 4,505 m,Zinalrothorn

4,221 m, Obergabelhorn 4,063 m,

Matterhorn 4,477 m and the Dent

Blanche 4,358 m).These very deman-

ding routes should in principle be un-

dertaken under the guidance of a guide.

However, the ascent of the 4,153 m

Bishorn is a relatively accessible must,

hence its nickname «the ladies’ 4,000».

Stazioni sciistiche e paesini sul limitare deighiacciai, l’offerta è ricca e varia. Si puòscegliere tra brevi passeggiate o percorsipiù lunghi, per esempio a destinazione diuno degli 8 rifugi anniviardi. Si possonoeffettuare delle escursioni accompagnateda una guida di montagna che vi sveleràla fauna e la flora, i segreti delle piante ele tradizioni locali. E’ possibile pure intra-prendere il giro della Val d’Anniviers, untrekking di una settimana per buoni cam-

minatori, con trasporto dei bagagli da unatappa all’altra. Le escursioni in alta monta-gna attirano molti alpinisti e scalatori nelpaese dei cinque 4000 (Weisshorn 4505 m,Zinalrothorn 4221m,Obergabelhorn 4063m,Cervino 4477 m e Dent Blanche 4358 m).Si tratta di escursioni esigenti da effettuarecon una guida. L’ascensione del Bishorn aquota 4153 m, è tuttavia una meta relative-mente accessibile, soprannominata appuntoil «4000 delle signore».

Summer in the Sierre-Anniviers re-

gion is about cooling down in Lake

Géronde, practising your swing at

the Brèche Golf Course, or going

for a mountain bike ride on 230 km

of marked paths weaving through

vineyards, villages, Alpine pastures

and forests... whether lazing around

or seeking adventure in the moun-

tains, the possibilities are endless.

The Brèche Golf Course, an 18 hole

course just 10 minutes out of town,

stretches over 20 hectares between the

Rhône river, lakes and a canal inhabited

by beavers. A lake and nature-relaxa-

tion area are to be found very close

by. You can also go for a dip in Lake

Géronde, nestled in a setting of wines

and surrounding countryside. Its beach-

garden, giant water slide and pedalos

invite you to take a break in stunning

surroundings. As for adventure, those

in search of an adrenaline rush have the

choice of rafting down theRhône,a trip

to the Adventure Forest inVercorin,

fun and extreme sports from the «Spider

Bridge» in Niouc, the amusement park

«Happyland New» in Granges, clim-

bing, paragliding flights, horseriding,

the Via Ferrata in Moiry-Grimentz,

canyoning etc.

Il dolce farniente o l’avventura in piena natura: lepossibilità sono tante.

Il Golf di Brèche, un percorso di 18 buche,situato a 10 minuti dalla città, si estende suben 20 ettari tra il Rodano e molti stagni ecanali popolati da castori. A due passi: unlago e un’area natura-relax. La possibilità dituffarsi nel lago di Géronde, incastonatoin uno scrigno di vigne e di natura. La sua

spiaggia-giardino, lo scivolo gigante e ipedalò sono un invito a fare una pausa inuna cornice privilegiata. Per chi ama l’avven-tura e le sensazioni forti c’è molta scelta: ilrafting sul Rodano, la Forêt de l’Aventurea Vercorin, gli sport fun e estremi a Nioucdal ponte dell’Araignée, il parco attrazioni«Happyland New» a Granges, la scalata, ivoli in parapendio, il turismo equestre, lavia ferrata a Moiry-Grimentz, il canyoning,ecc.

The Val d’Anniviers is a paradise

for downhill sports. The four ski

areas, Grimentz, St-Luc/Chandolin,

Vercorin and Zinal have a total of

220 km of pistes and 45 ski lifts.

Thanks to their high altitude, between

1,340 and 3,026 m, theAnniviers pistes

enjoy some of the best snow conditions

in theAlps. Just one ski pass gives you

access to all four ski areas.Winter at-

tractions also include three snowparks,

a freeride area, off-piste ski routes, an

Avalanche Training Centre and sled-

ging and snowtubing runs.Walking

and snowshoe paths and cross country

skiing mean you can plunge into the

area’s unspoilt countryside and great

white silence.Other winter activities

include ice skating, curling, paragli-

ding flights, ice climbing, night sled-

ging and torchlit ski descents.Winter

is also a time to explore with a guide

the depths of the Zinal Glacier, a fasci-

nating universe of snow and ice.

Sierre, «The Sunshine City», also has

the nickname «Pleasant Sierre».Nest-

led between vineyards and hills,with

its towers and medieval castles, Sierre

looks just like a Mediterranean city.

The city’s friendly, urban feel and its

exceptional climate have much to do

with this.

Sierre, a city of 14,000 inhabitants, is

made up of picturesque old Anniviard

quarters, although it is actually a very

young city: its colleges accommodate

over a thousand students and resear-

chers, specialising in the fields of tou-

rism and high-tech computer science

in particular. In the town centre, the

Château de la Cour (17th century) and

its contemporary gardens today house

the town council. This building was

once a hotel,with important guests such

as R.M.Rilke,whom Sierre celebrates

in a festival every three years.

Among the natural jewels of the Sierre

region are Lake Géronde and its beach,

and the Finges Park.Finges,well known

internationally for its abundance of fau-

na and flora, also contains Switzerland’s

largest pine forest.

Sierre is known both for its gastro-

nomy and as a wine-growing capital,

it is famous for its wine, both white

and red, and also for its liqueurs.You

can also try typical local products

such as unpasteurized milk raclette,

cheese from the mountain pastures,

dried meat, cured ham and sausages,

as well as fruit and vegetables from

the nearby valley-garden.

In the Sierre-Salgesch region and its

typical hillside villages, the local wine

growers are happy to open their cel-

lars to passing visitors.The «Sunshine

City» is a reference as far as wine is

concerned. It also houses the headquar-

ters ofVinofed (Fédération Mondiale

des Grands Concours Internationaux

deVins et Spiritueux) and the Mondial

du Pinot Noir, one of the top interna-

tional wine competitions, is held here

every September.The Château deVilla,

a Mecca for wine tasting, harbours the

very best thatValais produces,with over

500 different vintages on offer. This

beautiful patrician residence, which

dates from the 16th and 17th centuries,

is also considered to be theValais temple

to raclette. One half of the Valaisan

Museum of Wine andWinegrowing is

to be found here too,while the magni-

ficent Maison Zumhofen in Salgesch

houses the other part of the museum.

Da degustare deiprodotti locali di carattere: la racletteal latte crudo, i formaggi d’alpeggio,le carni secche, il prosciutto crudo e lesalsicce, la frutta e la verdura prove-nienti dai grandi orti della pianura inprossimità.

Nella regione di Sierre-Salgesch e nei villag-gi tipici delle colline, i vignaioli aprono conpiacere le loro cantine agli ospiti di passag-gio. La «Città del Sole» è una referenza dispicco in materia di vini. Ospita la sede dellaFederazione Mondiale dei Grandi Concorsi

Internazionali di Vini e Alcolici, e ogni annoin settembre il Mondiale del Pinot Nero. IlCastello di Villà, sede rinomata di degusta-zioni, custodisce il meglio della produzio-ne vallesana che si declina in ben 500 vinidiversi. Questa bella dimora patrizia del16o e 17o secolo è conosciuta come il tem-pio vallesano della raclette. Una parte delMuseo vallesano della vigna e del vino èubicata nello stesso sito, mentre la magni-fica Maison Zumhofen a Salgesch ospital’altro polo del museo.

Every year in early January, theThree

Wise Men on their sledges make a stop

in Chandolin.The magic of Epiphany

is part of the great traditions in this re-

gion. Summer is marked by the «inal-

pes» and «désalpes», processions of cows

heading to and from the mountain pas-

tures, and also cow-fighting. InAugust,

two of the great Alpine challenges, a-

mong the toughest and most famous in

the world, are held here: the Sierre-

Zinal running race and the Mountain

Bike Grand Raid Verbier-Grimentz.

Finally in early September, it’s time for

Vinea, the largest annual meeting for

wine lovers in Switzerland. Just a few

of the other big events which mark the

year: the Fééries de Noël in Grimentz,

and in summer, theVercorin Jazz Fes-

tival, theVissoie craft market, the culi-

nary market in Chandolin,the «Sismics»

cartoon festival and the Marche des

Cépages (Vineyard walk).

Ogni anno ai primi di gennaio, i Re Magisulla loro slitta fanno tappa a Chandolin.La Festa dei Re e la sua magia fanno partedelle grandi tradizioni della nostra regione.L’estate è segnata dalla salita delle muccheall’alpe, dal loro ritorno in paese e dai com-battimenti delle regine. In agosto, due grandisfide alpine, tra le più dure e le più celebridel mondo, sono in programma: la corsapodistica Sierre-Zinal e il Grand Raid MTBVerbier-Grimentz. All’inizio di settembre

infine, Sierre vive al ritmo di Vinea, l’ap-puntamento annuale più importante deglienofoli svizzeri. Tra le altre grandi manifes-tazioni popolari che ritmano l’anno, citiamole Féeries di Natale a Grimentz e, d’estate,il Festival Jazz di Vercorin, il mercato arti-gianale di Vissoie, il mercato culinario diChandolin, il Festival del fumetto di Sierree la Camminata dei Vitigni.
