Hansol’s New Principles of ManagementWe will become a corporation that creates unsurpassed value.
The late Byung-Chull Lee, who always possessed a sense of mission that led
him to make great contributions toward the reconstruction of the Korean economy
and the revitalization of Korean culture, entered the paper-manufacturing business
in 1965 with the acquisition of the Saehan Paper Manufacturing Industries Co.,
Ltd., which was renamed the Jeonju Paper Manufacturing Co., Ltd. At that time
Korea suffered from a lack of just about all types of goods, and there was a
particularly acute need for an adequate supply of paper for the publication of
cultural and educational materials that would be used to train and foster the human
resources necessary for the country’s economic development.
Jeonju Paper did indeed contribute greatly to the nation’s economic
progress and grew to become Korea’s largest paper manufacturer. It not only
reduced the country’s dependence on imports but also added paper products to
Korea’s growing list of exports and was the driving force in bringing the domestic
paper industry up to a top-class level.
In 1991 the company was spun off from the Samsung Group and renamed
Hansol Paper in a rebirth that led to diversification and the creation of Hansol’s
own group of affiliates. Today Hansol is strongly positioned as one of Korea’s most
promising conglomerates.
Hansol successfully weathered the Asian financial crisis of 1997 through
careful restructuring. Then, in 2002, Chairman Dong-Kil Cho instituted new
management policies emphasizing value, responsibility, and transparency. This
along with the strengthening of Hansol’s innovativeness and competitiveness has
brought not only Hansol Paper but also all its seven affiliates, Hansol Homedeco,
Hansol Chemical, Hansol LCD, Hansol CSN, Hansol Construction, Hansol
Development, and Hansol EME, to outstanding new levels of achievement.
Hansol’s next step will be to advance from the domestic arena onto the
world stage as a leader of a new age.
Forty years of Hansol: broadening horizons, progressing toward a new age
Founder, the late Chairman Byung-Chull Lee
In-Hi Lee adviser to the Hansol Group Dong-Kil Cho chairman of the Hansol Group
Hansol: evergreen for everyone
Only a person with the right kind of dreams for the future can live and
work meaningfully and effectively in the present, and the same goes for businesses. A
business has to be based on a proper vision for the future if it is to create true value
for itself and for society. And as a society develops and progresses, its businesses,
which are an indispensable part of it, share the fruits of that progress.
Hansol is like a living entity that thinks and acts, and it knows deep in its
heart that its ability to contribute to society depends on its system of values and its
actions.
If we look at the development of human civilization, we see that it was led
by people who were never satisfied with the status quo but always pushed forward,
accepting and winning out over the challenges of meeting an unknown future. We
are what we are today and where we are today thanks to the efforts of those who
dedicated themselves to overcoming the disadvantages and limitations of their age to
create something new.
Today Hansol is leading the way toward a better tomorrow. Never settling
for self-satisfaction with things as they are, Hansol is ever pushing forward in
thought and deed, approaching each new challenge with a fresh turn of mind,
which is reflected in the group’s motto, Evergreen Hansol.
Now Hansol has begun to make a second leap forward, with a view to
becoming one of the world’s leading business enterprises. Together with the Korean
people, we intend to apply ourselves with even greater dedication and passion to
writing a new chapter in corporate history in the 21st century.

The lights are on 24 hours a day at Hansol’s research facilitiesEnterprises with inadequate programs of technological development cannot survive long inour increasingly globalized world. Hansol never settles for the status quo, relentlesslyconducting research and developing its own technologies. Hansol knows only too well thattechnological advancement is the key to a successful future.
Paper Research InstituteHansol established Korea’s very first institute dedicated wholly to research on paper andpaper-making at its Jeonju Mill in 1979. The institute conducts in-depth research in all aspectsof materials and processes used in paper manufacture and has led Hansol’s and the country’sdevelopment in these areas.
More specifically, the institute’s research efforts are directed toward such fundamentalaspects of paper-making as solving quality-control and manufacturing process problems, increasing productivity, and improving production processes. The institute is also conductingconcentrated research on printing technology, and is expanding into other areas that willcontribute to increased competitiveness in this age of globalization. The institute’s facilitiesinclude the country’s only pilot coater and the best printing and analysis equipment in Korea.
Chemical Research InstituteEstablished in 1986, the Chemical Research Institute is the source of technologies that aregiving Hansol Chemical its competitive power, working on the development of new businesslines for the company and raising the level of technology in its existing lines of business. Areasof focus include materials for data-processing (for which the institute developed Korea’s firstdye sublimation color ribbon), latex, and chemicals for paper-making and for environmentalpurposes. The outstanding level of the institute’s technology is reflected in its receipt of theJang Young Sil Award in 1994 and the KT Mark for new technology in 1996.
The institute will continue to contribute to increased sales and profitability for HansolChemical by developing technologies that increase the competitiveness of the company’schemical products and diversify its lines through work in the three primary areas of securingtechnology, developing environmentally friendly products, and improving materials forinformation processing.
Biological Sciences Research InstituteHansol Chemical’s Biological Sciences Research Institute was established in 2000 with a viewto developing new business areas for the company on the basis of the technology it alreadypossessed in the field of the synthesis of organic chemicals. In the early stages the instituteacquired some outstanding new technology through investments in domestic and overseasventures involved in bio-sciences and through strategic technical-assistance partnershipswith them. Now the institute is able to combine its original strengths with those acquiredthrough cooperative agreements to realize the development of its own unique technologies. The institute is working to become a leading outsourcing partner in the field ofpharmaceutical fine chemicals.
