2 3 Studying at the ULg

A balanced European university curriculum

In Belgium the university curriculum is based onthe European model. It consists of 5 years divided into 2 cycles:1st cycle: Bachelor's degree - 180 creditsThe university bachelor’s courses areconsidered as “transitional”: they do notlead to a career and entitle the holder totake a master’s course.2nd cycle: Master's degreeThere are "60 credits" master's (1 year),mainly "120 credits" master's (2 years) butalso a "180 credits" master's (3 years) inVeterinary Medicine and in Medicine. The“120 credits” master's has a flexibleprogramme and can adapt to yourprofessional project according to theoptions, modules and in particular thepurpose chosen (30 credits out of the 120).

Exchange students are not bound to thestudy paths offered. However, it is stronglyadvised not to choose too widely divergentcourses in the Learning Agreement.

The Master’s degrees "120 credits" includevarious approaches (30 credits out of 120):• The RF (Research Focus) prepares the

student for scientific research. It includesboth specialist teaching in a specificdiscipline and a general course for thecareer of researcher. N.B.! Even thoughthe title of the purpose remains general, itmay include several important options.

• The TF (Teaching Focus) includes teachertraining to prepare students for teachingin higher secondary educationestablishments.

• The PF (Professional Focus) prepares thestudent for a professional specializationin a particular discipline of the subjectarea to which the course is linked. It mayalso include several options.

The PhD course leads to the academic titleof doctor. It may only be read after a courseof at least 300 credits (bachelor's degree +master's) and consists mainly in preparingand presenting a thesis. The PhD courseincludes a PhD training of 60 creditscompleted by a research training certificate. This training is linked to the specific skillsof the research teams and grants graduateswith high scientific and professionalqualifications.

Examinations

Within the same academic year studentscannot take more than two examinations onthe same course. As a rule, the secondassessment occurs during the third set ofexams (August-September).Examination periods are decided on by theBoard, however Faculties can decide specialexamination modalities for exchangestudents (Erasmus programme, ErasmusBelgica, cooperation agreements). In this case the exchange student must get intouch with the involved professors and thedepartmental coordinator at the beginning ofterm.Examiners convey the results of theirassessments using a figure between 0 and20, with 10 out of 20 being the passthreshold for individual courses, studentsmust reach an average mark of at least12/20.Exchange students have the results of theexaminations they took in Liège validatedby their home universities. The "Communauté française de Belgique"requirements to pass into the followingyears are not applicable to them.

When you take an examination, rememberto tell your teacher or to write on your exampaper that you are an exchange student.

Marks received at ULg are transferred to thestudent’s home university by the ULgdepartmental coordinator and related to theECTS grading table and ECTS marks. Thetable below was used in 2012-2013.

We wish to remind you that although yourresults will be validated in your homeuniversities while in Liège you are subject tothe regulations governing study andexamination at ULg. Your departmentcoordinator will answer your questions inthis regard. We particularly insist that youread the leaflet on plagiarism (‘Le plagiat !Pas pour moi !’) that you will find in yourWelcome Pack. It should be quite usefulwhen you write papers. www.ulg.ac.be/plagiat

1 The ECTS system

The European Credits Transfer System isbased on the total amount of work a studenthas to produce; it does not only take classhours into account.

The figure for each course (from 1 to 30)corresponds to the relative amount of workrequired from students for this particularcourse, including tutorials, labs, workshops, field work, internships, and personalresearch (whether at home or in libraries) aswell as class attendance. Time spent inpreparing for and taking exams or tests isalso included. One credit is supposed tocorrespond to about 30 hours of learning.

Work produced during one year amounts to60 credits (so that as a rule one semesteramounts to 30 credits). The use of thissystem makes transfers fromforeign institutions easier.

Students obtain credits after a successfulassessment of their knowledge andexpertise.

2 The ECTS and DS labels

The European Commission awards twohighly coveted labels in the field of teachingand training.

In 2009 the University of Liege was awardedthe ECTS Label. Over the 4000 Higereducation Institutions in Europe, only 64can currently claim this award. In 2010 ULgwas awarded the 2nd European label, the DSLabel. With this second award theUniversity of Liege became the only Belgianuniversity with these two European awards.

Through the ECTS Label the EuropeanCommission acknowledges the quality of theULg's support to mobile students –especially in the field of information andservices. As it conforms to ECTS-relatedprocedures, the ULg makes sure that resultsare both accessible and easy to transfer, andthus that the academic value of students'stays abroad is recognized.

The DS Label is awarded for the quality ofinformation on degrees and theirsupplements.

The Diploma Supplement is an exhaustiveand standardized document that isappended to all higher education degrees. It provides detailed information on thestudents’ university curriculum, the studyprogramme, the skills acquired. It makes thediploma more readable and more easilycomparable abroad. It ensures a greattransparancy, wheter for other universityinstitutions or for future employers.

Individual health insurance is compulsory inBelgium. Therefore all students have tosubscribe to the health insurance fund oftheir choice.‹ map of Liège city centre 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

• If you are from an EEA country (EU +Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) youare insured through your own nationalhealth service. Before leaving your homecountry, you should ask for the Healthinsurance european card. This form coversyou in case of illness abroad, and is validfor a maximum of one year.

If you need to see a doctor in Belgium, youwill have to subscribe to a health insurancefund with your Health insurance europeancard. You will then be refunded for many ofthe medical costs you incur in Belgium.

Moreover, in order not to be confrontedwith difficult situations, we highlyrecommend that you take out a mobilityinsurance policy such as "Tous risques".

• However, if you are from a non-EEAcountry, you must have social coverage tostay in Belgium, either through insurancesuch as "Tous risques" taken out in yourcountry of origin, or in Liège.

In addition, through their registration, alluniversity students get civil liability andphysical insurance coverage for anyaccident related to their universityactivities, at home and abroad.

The first days in a new environment arealways difficult. You have to find yourbearings, meet new fellow students, locaterooms and all sorts of necessaryinformation, not to mention lodgings...This necessary adaptation process takestime and energy.

Liège students may at first seemrather standoffish, but if you turn to themand ask for help or advice, they often turnout to be friendly and generous. In order to facilitate contacts betweenexchange students and local students, theULg set up a tutoring system in which localstudents offer their help and support tonewcomers – show them the city, theuniversity, and contribute to their smoothintegration into the local life.

The International and Erasmus Office canprovide the names and addresses of localstudents involved in this scheme, but willnot interfere in your meetings. If you are interested please send the formbelow or complete the online tutoring form:www.ulg.ac.be/en/erasmus/in/tutoring

1 In Liège

The city of Liège

Liège is located in the French-speaking partof the country, of which it is the mostsignificant city.

Liège is a child of the river Meuse: the riverhas given the city its shape and moulded thecharacter of its citizens. Take your time todiscover this multi-faced city and its manyneighbourhoods, which are like so manysmall villages. On Sunday mornings go andstroll through the "Batte", the longestmarket in Europe, along the river.

Liège and its area rely on water and fire: thefascinating alliance of opposites. Thehistory of Liège and its province is closelylinked to that of coal. From this burningstone comes one of the city’s nicknames: "La Cité Ardente". This means that thoughthe sun doesn’t always shine on Liège, youwill still find it in the heart of its citizens. The first image that Liège and its provincegive to tourists is one of a welcoming, animated region.

30 km from the Netherlands, 45 km fromGermany, 2.15 h. from Paris and 3.15 h.from London, the metropolis stands at theheart of Europe, at the crossroads of Latinand Germanic cultures.

Liège is obviously a student town. Itsnightlife is busy and lively. Evenings in thedowntown streets called "le Carré" areunique. This part of the city has a doublelife: luxury shopping by day, and by nightbusy students cafés and discos where youcan eat, drink and dance till dawn.

If you like the arts you will find much ofinterest: the ORW (Royal Opera ofWallonia), the Philharmonic Orchestra, about a dozen theatres, some pop-rock,electronic music and jazz festivals, international contemporary dance andtheatre gatherings, poetry festivals, etc. Many cinemas offer a wide range of films, from the more experimental to blockbusters.

Come and visit the «Province of Liège»

With the great asset of a central position, the Province of Liège is close to lots of greatplaces and can rely on easy access thanks toseveral means of transport: a fast-trainstation, an airport, and a motorwaynetwork.

All over the year, but particularly when thesun is shining, you can enjoy a variety ofwalks and hikes. Next to the extendednetwork of ways that are exclusivelydedicated to walkers and cyclists (RAVeL),you can explore over 5,000 km of signpostedwalks (see www.liegetourisme.be)!

Liège is looking forward towelcoming you!

What is a "kot" ?It’s an individual room, generally furnishedand rented by the landlord. Usually there areseveral kots in the same building. Studentsshare facilities such as toilets, bathroom andkitchen. A room can also belong to thelandlord's house, and the student will thenshare some facilities. They can also choose fully independentlodgings (studios, flats, or even houses). The price for a furnished kot is around300 €/month, additional costs not included. There are two types of prices: those thatinclude the cost of electricity, heating and gasand water, and those that don’t. The landlordcan also demand a monthly provision forexpenses with final settlement based onmeters at the end of the student’s stay. Makesure that you take this into account whencomparing prices.

To have more choice and take time tocompare lodgings, we advise you to arrive inLiège at least one or two weeks before thebeginning of classes. It is better to wait tillyou are here to make a choice and to paynothing before you have seen the place. Youcan also check whether the location of the
