  • Dear partners anD inDustry colleagues,In 2012 Buffalo Tours welcomed over 60,000 passengers to Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand, adding to the half a million guests carried over the companys 19 year lifetime. Our mission for 2012-13 is to continue to work closely with our partners to provide the highest quality and best value holiday experiences.

    In order to achieve this mission, we have been focusing on basic activities to make sure all details are carefully looked at and to improve our efficiency level across the board. If you look deeper into our recommended programmes in this brochure, each of the day tours has been carefully redeveloped and while they still cover the main sights and attractions they always include some special touches which are unique to Buffalo Tours.

    We are very fortunate to be working in a part of the world which is stable and fast-growing. Despite a challenging environment over the last 12 months, we have seen substantial increases in international arrivals from all of our source countries. I expect to see this trend continue in the years to come. The challenge is how to sustain this growth and make sure tourism will bring positive impacts to the communities and our environment. Take in the citys French colonial past, still evident in the faded buildings, cafe and coffee culture and baguettes sold on the streets. Enjoy visits to the Temple of Literature, the history museum, and the must-see traditional water puppet show.

  • southern beaches The beach options in southern Vietnam are exciting and plentiful, with hidden bays, stretches of deserted coast, popular for wind and kite surfing, and vast sand dunes perfect for jeep safaris. Go snorkelling, swimming, kayaking, hiking and diving or for those in search of a more relaxing break there is yoga, meditation, tai chi and massage.

    Mekong Delta The rich and diverse landscape of the Mekong Delta not only provides Vietnam with surplus rice supplies, but it also offers an exciting addition to travellers adventures in the country. Explore the maze of canals and rivers on a converted rice barge, visiting sleepy villages and floating markets.

    the north (hanoi to sapa)Summer in the north lasts from May to October when temperatures range between 30-35 degrees Celsius with high humidity and bursts of heavy rain. The temperature varies from 10-15 degrees in winter (December to March). February and March can be damp with drizzle and overcast skies.

    the centre (nha trang to hue)For most of the year Nha Trang is bathed in beautiful sunshine. However, between November and December the area has heavy rain. Dalat, at an altitude of 1,500 metres is cooler than the coastal area, particularly from November through to March. Danang, Hoi An and Hue experience typhoon activity from mid-October to mid-December when the climate becomes cooler, more overcast and wetter.

    the south (ho chi Minh city to phan thiet)The South is hot year round and has two seasons; one wet and the other dry. The wet season lasts from May to October and you can expect daily downpours. These are usually brief and easy to predict. The dry season from November to April is generally sunny and humid.

    airportsHo Chi Minh Citys Tan Son Nhat airport is approximately 7 kilometres northwest from the city centre. Hanois Noi Bai airport is approximately 35 kilometres north from the city centre.     festivals and eventscau ngu festivalA significant event is celebrated in January in Danang, along the coast of Central Vietnam, called the Cau Ngu festival - the fishermans festival. Alongside traditional rituals to encourage plentiful fish and favourable weather, visitor friendly contests and ceremonies take place in the form of tug-of-war, boat racing and fishing games.

    hoi an full Moon festivalEvery month under the full moon, the locals of Hoi An turn off the electricity, light candles and lanterns and fill the moonlit streets with music and poetry, creating an enchanting spectacle around the ancient town. Wandering the streets is a simple, yet wonderful way to spend the evening, making you feel like you have stepped back in time.

    Vietnamese new yearVietnamese New Year (Tet) is considered the biggest and most popular festival of the year in Vietnam. Celebrated in February, on the first day of the first month in Lunar Calendar, Tets celebration is the longest holiday which can last up to seven days. Visiting Vietnam during Tet can be a fantastic experience however please be aware, although the country is in celebratory mood at this time, train, buses and flights are often booked out or very expensive. Restaurants, shops, tailors and some key sites are closed and the floating markets in the Mekong do not operate for one week after Tet.

    Moc chau love festivalCelebrated in the mountainous district of Moc Chau, Vietnam, on the 1st of September is the Moc Chau Love Festival. A unique and romantic event that sees thousands of ethnic minorities descend on the town to meet prospective partners. With all the tribes donned in vibrant dress and music filling the air, the festival is a great place to sit, watch, sing, dance and eat with the locals.

    Visas/passportsVisas are required for most nationalities and can be obtained in the guests home country or Buffalo Tours can arrange them in advance. Visitors can obtain a visa on arrival but must have a letter of approval and one passport sized photograph. Otherwise visitors must have a valid visa on arrival. Passports must be valid for 6 months after final departure date.

    Day 3Hanoi Mai CHauUpon arrival check in to Mai Chau Lodge and choose your activities for the rest of the day. Options include nature walks, cycling, visiting hill tribe villages or relaxing at the lodge.

    Day 4Mai CHau Hanoi Today enjoy a half day cycling tour through the surrounding area passing through the villages of Sam Khoe, Pieng Ve and Buoc. Observe the local White Thai people undertaking their daily activities such as collecting firewood and carrying the corn.

    Day 5Hanoi Halong Bay Travel to Halong Bay and board a traditional junk for an overnight cruise. Explore some of the huge limestone caves, visit a floating fishing village, swim in the emerald waters or try your hand at kayaking. This evening enjoy a seafood feast for dinner.

    Day 6Halong Bay - HanoiEnjoy an early swim before you cruise through more spectacular scenery. In the afternoon drive back to Hanoi. This evening take a street food walking tour through the narrow, chaotic streets of the Old Quarter stopping to sample local delicacies such as traditional Vietnamese BBQ and the local brew beer hoi.

    Day 7Hanoi Hue This morning, fly to the former Imperial Capital of Hue. This beautiful city is rich in history, culture and ancient temples. Spend the day exploring the Citadel, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, before relaxing on a sunset cruise on the Perfume River.

    Day 8Hue Hoi an Today drive south along a beautiful stretch of coastline and over the scenic Hai Van Pass, to the picturesque riverside community of Hoi An. On arrival, enjoy a walking tour of this charming traditional town now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

    Day 9Hoi an Spend the day at leisure on the beach, learning the secrets of Vietnamese cuisine or having clothes made by one of the expert, inexpensive tailors Hoi An is famous for.

    Day 10Hoi an Ho CHi MinH City Fly to Ho Chi Minh City and spend the afternoon on a guided tour learning the story of Saigon and how it became Ho Chi Minh City.

    Day 4Hanoi Cat Ba islanDThis morning depart Hanoi for Cat Ba Island. This afternoon is free for you to enjoy some of the many activities available to you on Cat Ba. You could head out to sea on a kayak, hire a bike and explore the area or just relax and enjoy the beaches.

    Day 5Cat Ba islanD Board a junk boat and head off into Lan Ha Bay, a less travelled area of Ha Long Bay. Cruise through a maze of karst and

    attend cooking class for kids. The class is a fun way for children to learn about Vietnamese food. This evening watch a show at Hanois Water Puppet Theatre, where the artists have been performing for many years.

    Day 3Hanoi Today visit the Moon Bear Rescue Center on the outskirts of Tam Dao National Park. The centre has taken in more than 80 bears rescued from the cruelty of the bile industry since it opened in 2008. Listen to the stories of all the bears that have been saved.

    Rock climbing on Cat Ba IslandHalong Bay offers possibly the best rock climbing in South East Asia! There are over 2000 mystical limestone cliffs, formed by a unique process of erosion over thousands of years creating rock formations unlike anywhere in the world. Our guides are experienced at working with climbers of all abilities and ages. More often than not children are natural climbers. They do not necessarily have to reach the top of a climb, but will have lots of fun staying low on a climb, swinging around, and watching their parents try!

    Mai chau trekking 4 DAYSVisit the highlands of Vietnams Mai Chau region and see some of Vietnams most stunning scenery - limestone mountains covered in thick, lush vegetation, green rice paddies and corn fields, plumes of bamboo groves, tea plantations and waterfalls.

Our kayaking trips have child-sized life-vests and all our kayaks are tandems, so a child may share with an adult if they would prefer. After lunch cruise to Moody Island beach, where you will have the opportunity to rock climb down the limestone cliffs.

    Day 6Cat Ba Hanoi Hoi anThis morning transfer back to Hanoi for your flight to Hoi An. Spend the rest of the day in the picturesque town of Hoi An at leisure.

    Day 7Hoi anToday head into the countryside and discover more about local life in Vietnam. Learn about the daily lives of farmers by participating in some traditional farming activities and cruise along Thu Bon River while learning about some of the local fishing techniques used along the way.

    Day 8Hoi an Today you have the option of attending a lantern making workshop, taking a privately guided walking tour, visiting the ancient ruins of My Son or just relaxing on the beach in Hoi An.

    Day 9Hoi anTake a boat trip to the Cham Islands, an excellent spot for snorkeling. The Cham Islands consists of eight islands and is home to 155 species of coral and over 200 species of fish. Spend the morning snorkeling, swimming or just relaxing. Enjoy a seafood lunch before you head back to shore.

    Day 10Hoi an - Ho CHi MinH CityToday fly to Ho Chi Minh City. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

    Day 11Ho CHi MinH CityEarly this morning board a speedboat to visit Cu Chi. At Cu Chi explore the incredible system of tunnels that formed an underground city during the American/Vietnam War. Once back in Ho Chi Minh City spend the afternoon exploring the citys busy streets or visit the well loved Dam Sen Water Park.

    Day 12Depart Ho CHi MinH CityThe day is at leisure until you are transferred to the airport for your onward journey.

    Day 1Hanoi - Mai CHauCheck into Mai Chau Lodge and enjoy the lodges facilities.

    Day 2Mai CHau - Hang kia VillageThis morning cycle around the surrounding Thai villages and gain an insight into local life. After lunch, drive to the Hmong village of Sa Linh and enjoy a 3 hour hike to Hang Kia village. Stay overnight in a homestay in Hang Kia.

    Day 3Hang kia - Van VillageToday get off the beaten track as you trek through tropical rainforest, using local tracks and passing through cornfields as you descend into Mai Chau Valley. Late afternoon arrive at Van village and spend the night in a traditional house.

    Day 4Van Village - Mai CHau loDgeThis morning trek to Xam Khoe village where a vehicle will transport you to Mai Chau Lodge where you will be able to rest and relax in comfort.

    Day 11-13Ho CHi MinH City - Mui ne Your last few days in Vietnam will be spent on the beach in Mui Ne, which is a four hour drive from Ho Chi Minh City. A popular place for watersports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing, Mui Ne is home to giant sand dunes perfect for jeep safaris. The area is also justifiably known for its cheap and fresh seafood.

    Quy nhon Tucked away between Danang and Nha Trang, Quy Nhon is a quiet off the beaten track destination, despite its rich Cham kingdom history. The coastline is spectacular and there are many great spots for swimming, kayaking, hiking and diving or for those in search of a more relaxing break there are plenty of opportunities for yoga, meditation, tai chi and massage therapies.

    nha trang With 7 kilometers of golden beaches, Nha Trang is the premier beach resort in Vietnam. The town has many restaurants and attractions to keep you entertained and the islands just offshore offer excellent snorkeling and scuba diving sites. Thirty minutes from Nha Trang City are the I-Resort mud baths where you can have fun covering yourself in mud before washing it off in the natural hot springs and 20 minutes south of the city, is Bai Dai beach, where you can enjoy a fresh seafood lunch from one of the small restaurant huts located on the beachfront.

    Mui ne / phan thiet Only a 4 hour drive from Ho Chi Minh City, Mui Ne is famous for its vast sand dunes which are perfect for jeep safaris. Also a popular place for watersports, it has now become Vietnams top destination for windsurfing and kite surfing. Traditionally a fishing village the area is justifiably known for its cheap and fresh seafood and you can still see the brightly coloured Vietnamese fishing boats bringing in their catch in the morning.

    con Dao islands This stunningly beautiful archipelago is located off the southeast coast of mainland Vietnam and can be reached by a 45 minute flight from Ho Chi Minh City. Made up of 16 islands, 80% of the archipelago form part of a National Park and much of the surrounding marine area has been designated a Marine Protected Area (MPA). As a result Con Dao has some of the best diving in Vietnam, with pristine reefs and a large variety of marine life. The archipelago is also an important egg-laying area for sea turtles such as the hawksbill turtle and the green turtle. Offering jungle, coral reefs, beautiful beaches and hidden lagoons Con Dao is a paradise off the beaten track.

    ho tram Located along the coastal road of Ba Ria, Vung Tau Province, Ho Tram is a mere 2 hours from Ho Chi Minh City by car or 90 minutes via the ferry, making it popular with Ho Chi Minh City residents. Ho Trams pristine, still largely undeveloped coastline provides for the nicest beach in the area combining unspoiled waters with a wide sandy beach. From Ho Tram you can take a short excursion to Binh Chau Hot Springs famous for its relaxing mud baths and curative hot mineral springs.

    phu Quoc This beautiful island just off the Vietnamese and Cambodian coastlines is a short flight from Ho Chi Minh City. One of the least populated islands, it has lovely beaches and clear waters perfect for swimming. At the time in the year when resorts on the mainland in Southern Vietnam are experiencing the rainy season, the weather in Phu Quoc is excellent.

    When to goThe ideal time to visit Cambodia is between October and March. From November to February the cool, dry northeastern monsoon carries relatively little rain whereas the southwestern monsoon carries up to eighty percent of the countries rainfall between the months of June and October. Maximum daily temperatures range from 31 degrees Celcius in January to 40 degrees Celcius in April. Daily minimum temperatures are usually no less than 24 degrees.

    festivals and eventskhmer new yearThe Khmer New Year is a three day celebration which occurs at the end of harvest time. It marks the New Year according to the Khmer Lunar Calendar. Many people attend Buddhist temples where traditional rituals are performed. It is usually held from the 14-16th of April.

Participate in a half marathon where thousands of runners from over 40 countries compete and raise funds for charitable causes. Alongside the half marathon, theres a 10km run, a family 3km run and an artificial leg race as well as cycling events the previous day.

    puppet paradeAn event not to miss in February for those travelling to Siem Reap, is the Giant Puppet Parade. Children from disadvantaged backgrounds create educational puppets, some as big as 30 metres, and display them in a Chinese style dragon parade creating one of the towns biggest partys of the year. The parade begins in the centre of town and continues along the river, finishing near the Royal Gardens and Raffles Hotel.

    bon om tuk or Water festivalThis is one of the most important festivals in the Khmer calendar - the Water Festival, where water from the Mekong River reverses and empties into the Lake. It is a lively time to be in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap where boat racing is the highlight of a three day event.

    Visas/passportsA passport with at least six months validity is necessary. A visa is required for most nationalities and is available upon arrival at both Phnom Penh and Siem Reap international airports. A tourist visa costs US $20 and is valid for 30 days. One passport sized photo is required.

    Day 4sieM reap - kulen Mountain preaH kral (25kM trekking) Depart early and drive to the base of Kulen Mountain for the start of your trek. Begin trekking uphill through dense forest, passing the lingas carved into the rock and waterfalls. You will enjoy a breathtaking view and well deserved lunch at a local village before continuing to Sras Damrei and the Bat Cave. Return to Preah Kral village, enjoy dinner and stay overnight in the local monastery.

    Day 5preaH kral ta penH Village (15kM trekking) After breakfast at the monastery, you will trek through the forest to visit a hidden temple, which was constructed in the 9th century AD by Jayavarman II as well as the Pa Ong temple. After visiting the temple, continue to trek to Ta Penh village where you will stay overnight in a local family home. The village has about 200 families and the majority earn their living through agriculture.

    Day 6ta penH Village preaH angtHoM waterfall (19kM trekking) This morning, trek through local villages, rice fields and forest to visit Kra Hom Temple which is located on the top of a mountain. During the trek, you will also visit the Reclining Buddha before arriving at the Preah Angthom Waterfall where you can relax, swim and enjoy lunch. You will stay overnight in a local homestay near a waterfall.

    For Nature LoversThere are a number of wildlife experiences within Cambodia.     luang namtha Luang Namtha is a quiet town on the banks of the Nam Tha River, surrounded by thick jungle and mountains.     When to goLaos has a tropical monsoon climate with two distinct seasons; May to October is the rainy season and November to April is the dry season. It is hottest in March and April when temperatures can reach as high as 38 degrees Celcius. The lowest temperatures, usually in December, are around 15 degrees. The average temperature is between 25 and 30 degrees.

    boun pi Mai or laos new yearLaos New Year, locally called Pi Mai, is celebrated for three days in April with a water festival. Traditionally the festival is based on the importance of water in peoples daily lives. Today, perhaps because of influence from neighbouring Thailand, people take to the streets and douse one another with water. The biggest celebrations are in Luang Prabang and Vientiane. What better way to cool down during Laos hottest time of the year than to join in!

    luang prabang fireboat festivalThe Fireboat Festival in Luang Prabang is held on the day of the full moon in October. Throughout the country people launch small, candle lit banana-leaf boats on the rivers with offerings of incense and small amounts of money to bring luck and prosperity. In Luang Prabang, a fantastic fire boat procession takes place on the main street to the Royal Temple of Xiengthong. The best way to see it is over dinner on the Mekong, watching the boats gliding past. Following Ork Pansa, a traditional boat racing festival takes place all over the country. In Vientiane on the 31st October, you can see dragon boat races, boat parades, trade fairs and fireworks.

    Day 1luang praBang Arrive in Luang Prabang and enjoy a half-day tour around this beautiful World Heritage town. Nestled in a stunning setting amid lush mountains, this sacred city of golden temples and saffron robed monks provides endless opportunities for sightseeing. Visit a number of Wats (temples) and other fascinating sites. Spend the afternoon exploring on your own at the relaxed pace of laid-back Laotian life.

    Day 2luang praBang Cruise the Mekong River to visit the famous and sacred Pak Ou Caves. Since the 16th century, the local people have brought images of the Buddha to place in the cavesby now there are thousands. Visit the village of Ban Xang Khong where weaving of traditional Lao textiles takes place on ancient wooden looms.

    Day 3luang praBang If you wish, get an early start and participate in the traditional

    Lao rite of giving alms to the monks. Every morning, some 300 monks file through the city silently collecting offerings. After breakfast, drive to beautiful Kuang Si Waterfall. The falls cascade over many calcified tiers and down several hundred feet into a series of cool, turquoise pools. You can cool off with a swim before returning to Luang Prabang. Enjoy a local lunch before returning to the hotel for an evening at your leisure.

    Day 4luang praBang Vientiane Take an early morning flight to Vientiane. Visit Wat Sisaket, with its thousands of miniature Buddha statues, as well as many other picturesque sites and monuments, followed by lunch.

    Day 5Vientiane pakse After an early breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Pakse. Your first adventure here is an easy four-hour hike up to the Bolaven Plateau. This hike goes through a local village, coffee plantations, over a hanging bridge, and on to the plains. Huge boulders, pine trees, epiphytes and wild orchids are abound. Return to the hotel for lunch. The afternoon is free for you to explore Pakse.

    Day 6pakse 4000 islanDsDrive south to the famous Khmer Temple complex of Wat Phou. This UNESCO World Heritage Site represents the easternmost border of the Khmer empire. Continue on to an Elephant Camp to see how handlers (mahouts) train these giant, friendly beasts! Ride one of the friendly creatures to the top of Phou Asa to see mysterious ruins there. After lunch, youll continue to 4000 Islands by van and boat.

    Day 74000 islanDs The section of the Mekong River that runs through southern Laos boasts thousands of tiny islands. This morning, youll cruise through this tropical paradise to the largest waterfalls in Asia, Khone Phapeng & Li Phi Falls. If youre lucky, you might see some of the 50-100 Irrawaddy (freshwater) dolphins that make 4000 Lakes their home. Spend the afternoon relaxing or exploring an island on your own.
