Even in somber economic times, solar energy has given rise toa glowing optimism aroundthe planet. The potential ofunused spaces, like rooftops,non-arable land, and desertsis extraordinary withdeveloping societies oftenenjoying an abundance ofavailable free sunshine. It has

been calculated that less than1% of the European landmasscovered with photovoltaicmodules could meet Europesentire electricity consumption, and that 4% of the worlds desertscould fully satisfy global demand.

Countries have set ambitioustargets for renewable energy:25% of total electricity productionby 2025 for the US, 15% of totalenergy consumption by 2020for China, and 20% by 2020for the EU. Solar growthforecasts have been largelysurpassed already, andinstallations are set to multiply2.4 times by 2014, withdouble-digit growth annually.Led by Germany, Europe is stillthe market leader; however growth is booming in Japan, the US, Canada, Australia, andsoon in China and India, withNorth African countries, mainlyMorocco, waiting in the wings.

The real critical mass or momentum for solar power isgrid parity, the point at whichphotovoltaic electricity is equalin cost or cheaper than electricityavailable from the distribution

network. Within years, it willbe achieved in areas withabundant sun and highelectricity costs, like California,Japan and Italy.

As a photovoltaic panelmanufacturer, junction boxmaker, installer, integrator, project developer or wholesaler,

Photovoltaic cablesThese state-of-the-art 0.6 to 1 KVcross-linked ENERGYFLEX cables offer exceptionalperformance, easy installationand long-term reliability for shortDC connections. They linkphotovoltaic panels on rooftopsor solar fields, and also connectthem to the array box (if one

exists), or to the inverter whichtransforms DC solar energy intousable AC electricity. Resistantto extreme temperatures(-40C to +120C), ozoneand UV, these zero-halogencables are low-smoke andflame-retardant for enhancedfire security. Both UL andTV-certified, they fit mainconnectors, are color-stripedfor easy installation and phaseidentification, meet RoHSdirectives, and are fully recyclable.Through its multiple plant capacity,Nexans is able to provide themanywhere in the world. For Schneider Electric, Nexans

supplied over 1,000 km of ENERGYFLEX photovoltaic cablesin a mere 2 months for a photovoltaic farm in SanpietroVernetico, near Brindisi in

southern Italy. In Europe, thesecables are used to interconnectpanels, and also connectmodule strings to the inverter.

Solar cablesIn the US and Canada, Nexanssupplies solar cables for photovoltaic farm wiring, suchas 1 KV or 2 KV RHH, RHW-2,600V USE-2, and RW90 inCanada. These XLPE insulated

cables are used to connectmodule strings or multiplearrays to the inverter. They

are suitable for direct burial. Armored TECK cables canbe used in rocky terrain or underneath roads.Nexans is supplying solar cablesto leading Canadian and

American providers of PV systems solutions for solar power plants. LV copper and

aluminum cablesThese cables also providereliable, durable links betweenarray boxes and the inverter.PVC-sheathed 95-300 mm2 buried cables can carry upto 1,800 V DC current. For installers and project designerswho need Class-2 protection,Nexans can also providecables to meet this demand.Nexans supplied 20 kmof cables to Schneider for a photovoltaic park in theDurance Valley, a regionwhich has a dozen major photovoltaic projects underway.

High temperature cablesFor panel-to-panel connectionsin extreme temperatures, likedeserts (very hot in the daytimeand cold at night), Nexansproduces a wide range of flexiblesilicone cables that can carryup to 15 KV in temperaturesbetween -60C to 180C.These halogen-free flexiblecables, with high fire performancefor safety of personnel andequipment, are also anti-UV and ozone stable.

    Cabinets for residential andcommercial production

Nexans supplies cabinets fittedwith fuses and switches enablingthe utility to isolate the network,

either from a consumer or producer perspective. These cabinets are a major node between private andpublic networks and a securitypoint for maintenance.

Low-voltage DC busbarsFor important solar power plantsand specific applications,

low-voltage busbars connectthe panel arrays and the inverter,or the inverter and transformer, and can replace largecross-section buried cables.Nexans can undertake special

studies to design a busbar solution for very specific high-powered photovoltaic farms.

Medium-voltage jumpersFor all ground-basedphotovoltaic installations, customized medium-voltagejumpers (from one to severaldozen meters long, equippedon both sides with accessories)connect transformers toswitchgears. These jumpers are electricallypre-tested to guaranteeefficiency in the field and avoidany trouble when energizingthe photovoltaic farm. Earth/ground cablesFor protection against shortcircuits and fire, these copper cables (either shielded or unshielded) securely groundpanel frames, assuring thata uniform earth/potential prevailsthrough the photovoltaic park.French solar energy companyand installer, Sunnco, regularly

use Nexans green/yellow H07VK (450/750 V) as groundingwire for rooftop installations.
