LicensingThree license types are available:

• Base—Supports all Ethernet functionality for 24 ports (18 internal and six external). A two-node Virtual Cluster Switching (VCS) is included.

• Upgrades, which can be added at any time:

- FCoE license—Offers FC and Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) support. An FCoE license enables six external FC ports and FCoE functionality.

FC ports support auto-sensing (which negotiates to the highest speed that is supported by the attached device), WWN-based soft zoning, and trunking.

Multi-hop FCoE requires an Ethernet fabric that is enabled with a VCS license. As a result, both license upgrades (FCoE and VCS) are required.

- VCS license—Enables VCS clustering. A two-node VCS can be created without requiring a VCS license; however, creation of a VCS cluster beyond two nodes requires a VCS license on all nodes in the cluster.

• Enterprise—Bundles the Base and upgrade licenses together.

Connection blade Installation and safety considerations 2

Refer to the Operating Manual that comes with your PRIMERGY BX900 or BX400 Blade Server for help identifying your specific enclosure setup, available connections, and power requirements.

System reliability guidelinesTo help ensure proper cooling, performance, and system reliability, make sure the following requirements are met:

• Each of the I/O module bays at the rear of the PRIMERGY BX900 or BX400 Blade Server contains either a switch or a filler blade.

• A removed hot-swappable Brocade VDX 2730 10GbE Connection Blade should be replaced with an identical Brocade VDX 2730 10GbE Connection Blade or filler blade within 60 seconds of removal.

• The ventilation areas on the sides of the PRIMERGY BX900 or BX400 Blade Server power modules and blowers are not blocked.

• You have followed the reliability guidelines in the documentation that comes with your PRIMERGY BX900 or BX400 Blade Server.

Handling static-sensitive devices

ATTENTIONStatic electricity can damage the chassis and other electronic devices. To avoid damage, keep static-sensitive devices in their static-protective packages until you are ready to install them.

To reduce the possibility of electrostatic discharge, observe the following precautions:

• Limit your movement. Movement can cause static electricity to build up around you.

• Handle the device carefully, holding it by its edges or its frame.

• Do not touch solder joints, pins, or exposed printed circuitry.

• Do not leave the device where others can handle and damage it.

• While the device is still in its static-protective package, touch it to an unpainted metal surface of the chassis or an unpainted metal surface on any other grounded rack component in the rack in which you are installing the device for at least two seconds. This drains static electricity from the package and from your body.

• Remove the device from its package and install it directly into the chassis without setting down the device. If it is necessary to set down the device, put it back into its static-protective package. Do not place the device on the chassis or on a metal surface.

• Take additional care when you handle devices during cold weather. Heating reduces indoor humidity and increases static electricity.

• Some types of chassis come with electrostatic discharge (ESD) connectors. If the chassis is equipped with an ESD connector, refer to the documentation that comes with the chassis for using the ESD connector.

Electrical considerationsThe Brocade VDX 2730 10GbE Connection Blade requires 52 watts nominal (maximum of 68 watts), which is provided by the PRIMERGY BX900 or BX400 Blade Server. No other power requirement or provision exists.

Installation and safety considerations when handling transceivers and cables

This section discusses the following topics:

• “Fiber-optic connector cleaning”

• “Handling SFP and SFP+ transceivers”

• “Cabling guidelines for fiber-optic cables”

• “Cabling guidelines for twinax cables”

CAUTION

Use only optical transceivers that are qualified by Brocade Communications Systems, Inc. and comply with the FDA Class 1 radiation performance requirements defined in 21 CFR Subchapter I, and with IEC 825-2. Optical products that do not comply with these standards might emit light that is hazardous to the eyes.

Fiber-optic connector cleaningTo avoid problems with the connection between the SFP and SFP+ transceivers and the fiber cable connectors, Brocade strongly recommends cleaning both connectors each time you disconnect and reconnect them. In particular, dust can accumulate in the connectors and cause problems such as reducing the optic launch power.

To clean the fiber-optic cable connectors, Brocade recommends using a fiber-optic reel-type cleaner. You can purchase this type of cleaner from the following website.

http://www.fisfiber.com/

When you are not using an SFP or SFP+ transceiver, make sure to use the protective covering.

Handling SFP and SFP+ transceiversBefore installing an SFP or SFP+ transceiver, be aware of the following:

• The housing on the SFP and SFP+ transceiver includes an integral guide key that is designed to prevent you from inserting the transceiver incorrectly.

• Use minimal pressure when you insert an SFP or SFP+ transceiver in the port. Forcing the transceiver into the port can cause damage to the transceiver or the Brocade VDX 2730 10GbE Connection Blade port.

• You can insert or remove an SFP or SFP+ transceiver while the PRIMERGY BX900 or BX400 Blade Server is powered on.

• You must first insert the SFP or SFP+ transceiver in the port before connecting the cables.

• You must remove the cable from the SFP or SFP+ transceiver before you remove the SFP or SFP+ transceiver from the Brocade VDX 2730 10GbE Connection Blade.

Inserting SFP and SFP+ transceivers and cables2

To avoid damage to the fiber-optic cables, follow these guidelines:

• Do not route the cable along a folding cable-management arm.

• When you attach the cable to a device on slide rails, leave enough slack in the cable so that it does not bend to a radius of less than 38 mm (1.5 in.) when the device is extended, or becomes pinched when the device is retracted.

• Route the cable away from places where it can be snagged by other devices in the rack.

• Do not overtighten the cable straps or bend the cables to a radius of less than 38 mm (1.5 in.).

• Tie wraps are not recommended for optical cables because they are easily overtightened.

• Do not put excess weight on the cable at the connection point. Make sure the cable is well supported.

CAUTION

A 50-micron cable should not be bent to a radius less than 1.5 inches (38 mm) under full tensile load and 1.2 inches (30.5 mm) with no tensile load.

Cabling guidelines for twinax cablesCabling guidelines for twinax cables are essentially the same as the guidelines listed for fiber-optic cables. Refer to “Cabling guidelines for fiber-optic cables” on page 19 for more information.

Establishing an Ethernet connection 3

Establishing an Ethernet connectionThe Ethernet network interface provides management access, including direct access to the Network OS CLI. You must configure at least one IP address using a serial connection to the CLI before you can manage the system with other Management interfaces. You can either configure static IP addresses in IPv4 format, or you can use a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) client to acquire IPv4 addresses automatically. For IPv6 addresses, both static IPv6 and stateless IPv6 autoconfiguration are supported. Refer to “Configuring IP addresses using IPv4 and IPv6” for more detailed information.

Setting static IPv4 addresses and using DHCP are mutually exclusive. DHCP is enabled by default. Remove the DHCP client before you configure a static IPv4 IP address. Use the no ip address dhcp command to disable DHCP.

NOTEYou must connect through the serial port to set the IP address if the network interface is not configured already.

Configuring IP addresses using IPv4 and IPv6This section provides instruction for configuring IP addresses for IPv4 and IPv6 for the following scenarios:

• “Configuring a static IPv4 Ethernet address”

• “Using DHCP to configure IPv4 addresses”

• “Configuring a static IPv6 Ethernet address”

• “Stateless IPv6 autoconfiguration”

Configuring a static IPv4 Ethernet address1. Connect to the switch through the serial console.

2. Log in to the default administrative account using the following default settings:

Login: admin

Password: password

3. When prompted, either change the administrative password, or press Ctrl-C to bypass.

NOTEThe Brocade VDX 2730 10GbE Connection Blade comes direct from the factory with an additional startup process to set the initial password. To bypass setting the initial password, use Ctrl-C to exit or press Enter to proceed. The password will not be changed. You will be prompted again at the next login until the password is changed.

4. Enter the configure terminal command to enter global configuration mode.

5. Enter the interface Management rbridge-id/0 command to configure the management port.

There is only one management port available and that port number is 0.

6. If DHCP is enabled, enter the no ip address dhcp command to disable DHCP.

7. Enter the ip address IPv4_address/prefix_length command.

NOTESpecifying an IPv4 address with a subnet mask is not supported. Instead, a prefix number is used. For example, use 209.157.22.99/24 instead of 209.157.22.99/255.255.255.0.

8. Enter the IP gateway address IPv4_address command to configure the gateway address in IPv4 format.

A sample configuration is provided.

Using DHCP to configure IPv4 addressesBy default, DHCP is enabled. The Network OS DHCP client supports the following parameters:

• External Ethernet port IP addresses and prefix length

• Default gateway IP address

When you connect the DHCP-enabled switch to the network and power on the switch, the switch automatically obtains the Ethernet IP address, prefix length, and default gateway address from the DHCP server. The DHCP client can only connect to a DHCP server on the same subnet as the switch. If your DHCP server is not on the same subnet as the Brocade VDX 2730 10GbE Connection Blade, use a static IP address.

To set an IPv4 address using DHCP, complete the following steps.

1. Log in to the default administrative account using the following default settings:

Login: admin

Password: password

2. When prompted, either change the administrative password, or press Ctrl-C to bypass.

Time settings3

Stateless IPv6 autoconfigurationIPv6 allows assignment of multiple IP addresses to each network interface. Each interface is configured with a link local address in almost all cases, but this address is only accessible from other hosts on the same network. To provide for wider accessibility, interfaces are typically configured with at least one additional global scope IPv6 address. IPv6 autoconfiguration allows more IPv6 addresses, the number of which is dependent on the number of routers serving the local network and the number of prefixes they advertise.

For information about configuring stateless IPv6 autoconfiguration, refer to the Network OS Administrator’s Guide.

Time settingsThe ntp server command accepts multiple server addresses in IPv4 or IPv6 format. When multiple NTP server addresses are passed, the ntp server command sets the first obtainable address as the active NTP server. If there are no reachable time servers, then the local switch time is the default time.

Network time synchronization is only guaranteed when a common external time server is used by all switches.

NOTEAfter upgrading your switch to a new Network OS version, you may need to reset the time zone information.

Synchronizing the local time with an external sourceUse the ntp server command to add an NTP server IP address to a list of server IP addresses. At least one IP address in the list must be a reachable, configured NTP server or the request will fail.

Enter the ntp server command.

switch(config)# ntp server 192.168.10.1

Removing an NTP server IP addressUse the no ntp server command to remove an NTP server IP address from a list of server IP addresses. At least one IP address in the remaining list must be a reachable, configured NTP server or the remove request fails.

Enter the no ntp server command.

switch(config)# no ntp server 192.168.10.1Displaying an NTP server IP address

Use the show ntp status command to display the current active NTP server IP address or LOCL (for local switch time when no NTP servers were configured or no reachable NTP servers are available). The request is for the local switch unless a switch ID is specified. Specify the all parameter to send the request to all switches in the cluster.

Time zone settingsSwitch operation does not depend on a date and time setting. However, having an accurate time setting is needed for accurate logging and audit tracking. You can set the time zone by specifying one of the following regions: Africa, America, Pacific, Europe, Antarctica, Arctic, Asia, Australia, Atlantic, and Indian.

The time zone and Daylight Saving Time (DST) settings are persisted in ROM when the unit is powered off, and the clock is still running under battery.

The time zone setting has the following characteristics:

• The setting automatically adjusts for Daylight Savings Time.

• Changing the time zone on a switch updates the local time zone setup and is reflected in local time calculations.

• By default, all switches are in the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) time zone (0,0). If all switches in a fabric are in one time zone, it is possible for you to keep the time zone setup at the default setting.

• System services that have already started will reflect the time zone changes only after the next reboot.

• Time zone settings persist across failover for high availability.

• Time zone settings are not affected by NTP server synchronization.

Setting the clockThe clock set command sets the local clock date and time. An active NTP server, if configured, automatically updates and overrides the local clock time. Time values are limited to between January 1, 1970 and January 19, 2038.

NOTEYou should only set the clock if there are no NTP servers configured. Time synchronization from NTP servers overrides the local clock.

Enter clock set CCYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS command.

CCYY = year MM = month DD = day HH = hour MM = minutes SS = seconds

Setting the time zoneUse the clock timezone command to set the time zone for a switch. You must use the command for all switches for which a time zone must be set. However, you only need to set the time zone once on each switch because the value is written to nonvolatile memory.

For a list of accepted time zones, refer to the Network OS Administrator’s Guide.

Enter the clock timezone region/city command, as shown in the following example:

switch# clock timezone America/Los_Angeles

NOTEAfter upgrading your switch to a new Network OS version, you may need to reset the time zone information.

To remove the time zone setting, refer to the Network OS Administrator’s Guide.

Displaying the current local clock and time zoneThe show clock command returns the local time, date, and time zone. The local clock is used unless a switch ID is specified. Specify the all parameter to request local clocks from all switches in the cluster.

NOTESpecifying the all parameter returns only local information.

Installing a licenseThe Brocade Network OS includes platform support in standalone and Brocade VCS Fabric modes, as well as optional features that are enabled by license keys. You can purchase Brocade licenses per product or per feature. Each switch in a fabric needs its own licenses.

License upgrade orders are fulfilled either through a license activation paperpack, or by an e-mail message containing a transaction key and a link to the Brocade software portal. A device-specific license file is generated in the software portal when you enter the transaction key along with the switch license ID. Use the show license id command to obtain the switch license ID.

Follow the instructions in the paperpack or the e-mail message as described for your platform and license type. The transaction key is case-sensitive; you must enter the key exactly as it appears in the paperpack. To lessen the chance of an error, copy and paste the transaction key when you install the license on your switch.

Installing a license 3

You will receive an e-mail message with the software license keys embedded in an XML file, along with installation instructions.

When you install licenses, some features require that you reboot the switch and some features require you to disable and re-enable ports or the entire switch. For example, the FCoE license requires a reboot. Complete the following steps to install a license.

1. Open the e-mail message that contains the license key and extract the license key from the XML file. The license key is printed between the XML start <licKey> and end </licKey> tags. Be sure to copy the entire string, including spaces and non-alphanumeric characters.

2. Enter the license add licstr command followed by the license key and, optionally, an RBridge-ID if you are installing the license on a remote switch. If the license key includes spaces, you must enclose the entire string in double quotation marks.

3. Verify that you added the license by entering the show license command. The command lists all licensed features currently installed on the switch. If the feature is not listed, enter the license add licstr command again.

Depending on the license type, you may be prompted to reboot the switch or to enable the ports. Take the appropriate action as indicated by the command output.

NOTEStore the license key in a safe place for future reference. The show license command does not print out the license key.

To remove a license, refer to “Removing a license” on page 58.

Adding a Brocade VCS Fabric licenseThe following example adds a Brocade VCS Fabric license on the local Brocade VDX 6720 switch and verifies the transaction. The license takes effect immediately after the command is executed. No further action is required.

Configuring VCS settings 3

NOTEAll supported switches are shipped with Brocade VCS Fabric mode disabled.

Brocade VCS Fabric configuration managementComplete the following configuration steps to add a new switch into a fabric.

1. Connect to the switch and log in using an account assigned to the admin role.

2. Enter the vcs rbridge-id id enable command.

The switch remembers its RBridge ID once it has been assigned. The vcs rbridge-id id enable command also sets the insistent RBridge ID property on the switch.

3. Reboot the system.

After the required reboot, the switch participates in the RBridge ID allocation protocol which insists that the same value that was manually configured prior to reboot be allocated after reboot.

The switch is not allowed into the fabric if there is a conflict; for example, if another switch with the same ID exists and is operational in the fabric. You have the opportunity to select a new RBridge ID using the same CLI.

Once an ID has been assigned by the fabric protocol, these IDs are then numerically equated to RBridge IDs and are treated as such after that.

Use the vcs command to configure the Brocade VCS Fabric parameters, VCS ID, and the switch RBridge ID, and to enable Brocade VCS Fabric mode. You can set the Brocade VCS Fabric parameters and enable Brocade VCS Fabric mode at the same time, or you can enable Brocade VCS Fabric and then perform the ID assignments separately. Refer to Table 5 on page 39 for details.

After configuring the Brocade VCS Fabric parameters, enter the copy running-config startup-config command to apply the current running configuration to the startup configuration. This is important to capture any changes that have been made to the running configuration so they persist the next time the switch reboots in the same mode.

The switch disable is not saved across a reboot, so if the switch was disabled prior to the reboot, the switch returns to the enabled state when it finishes the boot cycle.

Brocade VCS Fabric configuration tasksTable 5 lists additional commands you can enter to set up your Brocade VCS Fabric environment.

Configuring VCS settings3

Refer to the Brocade Network OS Administrator’s Guide for additional commands used to enable and disable VCS Fabric mode.

VCS Fabric mode and standalone modeSome key differences exist between standalone mode and VCS Fabric mode that you should be aware of when troubleshooting your system.

• Interfaces are disabled by default in standalone mode but enabled by default in VCS Fabric mode. Thus, when you apply the default configuration, you should take this into account.

• The interface can be configured as a Layer 2 switch port in standalone and VCS Fabric modes.

• Switching between VCS Fabric mode and standalone mode and then reverting back to the original mode would result in the loosing the configuration and booting up using the default configuration.

• A port-profile port is allowed only for Layer 2 ports.

Refer to Table 5 for the commands used to enable and disable VCS Fabric mode.

Principal routing bridge availabilityIf a new principal routing bridge is introduced into a working VCS Fabric cluster, or if the principal routing bridge is lost and a new switch must be elected, the fabric is rebuilt from the control-plane viewpoint, whereas the data plane continues to forward traffic without disruption. The primary responsibilities of the principal routing bridge in a VCS Fabric are:

• Routing bridge ID allocation

• Ownership of virtual management IP address

• Keeping the configuration database synchronized

Verifying VCS Fabric configuration and routing bridge IDFor the ISL to function correctly, the following criteria must be true:

• Both switches must have VCS Fabric mode enabled.

• Both switches must have the same VCS ID.

• Each switch must have a unique routing bridge ID.

To check the criteria, complete the following steps.

1. Enter the show vcs command on each switch.

2. Depending on the output, proceed as follows:

Switch from Fabric Cluster mode to Standalone mode(Setting the RBridge ID to 1 and the VCS ID to 0).

switch# no vcs enable

Replace the designated switch in the Fabric Clusterwith the current switch.

switch# vcs rbridge-id 5

Using the Fibre Channel interface3

Using the Fibre Channel interfaceFibre Channel ports provide the ability to connect a Brocade VCS Fabric cluster to a Fabric OS network. These connections provide support for zoning across Network OS and Fabric OS fabric types, which can enable FCoE devices on the Brocade VCS Fabric cluster to access SAN storage and services.

Interswitch Links (ISLs) connect Fibre Channel ports on the Network OS switch to EX_Ports on an FC router, which in turn connects to the Fabric OS network. These connections can be regular or long distance. Currently, E_Ports are the only supported port type on Network OS Fibre Channel ports.

Network OS software provides the following commands for managing Fibre Channel ports:

• interface FibreChannel—Global configuration mode command that allows you to enter the interface Fibre Channel configuration submode where you can enter commands to activate and deactivate a Fibre Channel port (no shutdown and shutdown commands) and to set port attributes (desire-distance, fill-word, isl-r_rdy, long-distance, speed, trunk-enable, and vc-link-init commands).

• show running-config interface FibreChannel—A privileged EXEC mode command that displays Fibre Channel port configuration information.

• show interface FibreChannel—A privileged EXEC mode command that displays hardware counters that monitor activity and status of a Fibre Channel port.

Fibre Channel port activation and deactivationAn FCoE license must be installed on a Brocade VDX 2730 GbE Connection Blade switch to allow Fibre Channel port activation. Brocade VCS Fabric mode must be enabled. Once the FCoE license is installed, all Fibre Channel ports are activated by default.

Use the no shutdown command to activate a Fibre Channel port. Use the shutdown command to deactivate a port.

Enabling a Fibre Channel port

1. In privileged EXEC mode, enter the configure terminal command to enter the global configuration mode.

2. Enter the interface FibreChannel rbridge-id/slot/port command for the Fibre Channel port you want to enable.

A configuration submode prompt appears.

3. Enter the no shutdown command.

The following example enables port 1 on routing bridge 8.

switch# configure terminalEntering configuration mode terminalswitch(config)# interface FibreChannel 8/0/1switch(config-FibreChannel-8/0/1)# no shutdown

2. Enter the interface FibreChannel rbridge-id/slot/port command for the Fibre Channel port you want to disable.

A configuration submode prompt appears.

3. Enter the shutdown command.

The following example disables port 1 on routing bridge 8.

switch# configure terminalEntering configuration mode terminalswitch(config)# interface FibreChannel 8/0/1switch(conf-FibreChannel-8/0/1)# shutdown

Viewing Fibre Channel port attributes

To view the Fibre Channel port attributes for a single port, in privileged EXEC mode, enter the show running-config interface FibreChannel rbridge-id/slot/port command for the port you want to view.

To view the Fibre Channel port attributes for all Fibre Channel ports in the fabric, enter the show running-config interface FibreChannel command without any additional parameters.

Whether you view attributes for a single port or for all ports, the settings for the desire-distance, isl-r_rdy, trunk-enable, and shutdown attributes are always displayed. The speed, long-distance, vc-link-init, and fill-word attributes are displayed only if they are set to nondefault values.

The following example displays the Fibre Channel port attributes for a single port. In this case, the speed, long-distance, and vc-link-init attributes appear because they have been set to values other than their default values.

Interoperability4

Port negotiationThe Brocade VDX 2730 10GbE Connection Blade has been designed to be highly interoperable. Auto-sensing capabilities detect 4 Gbps and 8 Gbps FC ports, as well as 10 Gbps Ethernet ports that are compliant with DCB standards. Auto-sensing also detects 4 Gbps and 8 Gbps SFP and SFP+ transceivers. The actual data-signaling rate used on a port is automatically sensed and set to the rate supported by the device or devices attached to the port.

Port mapping

Table 6 shows the internal and external port mapping information for the Brocade VDX 2730 10GbE Connection Blade.

Accessing the Brocade VDX 2730 10GbE Connection Blade 4

Accessing the Brocade VDX 2730 10GbE Connection BladeThe Brocade VDX 2730 10GbE Connection Blade has two types of interfaces:

• Ethernet—Used for LAN switch management (initialization, configuration, diagnostics, status). Able to connect to a management module.

• I2C—Used to control power to the Brocade VDX 2730 10GbE Connection Blade and monitor environmental conditions.

The Brocade VDX 2730 10GbE Connection Blade is managed as a single element. It has a single IP address and appears as a separate entity to the Telnet protocol and the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).

Secure Telnet access is available using Secure Shell (SSH), a network security protocol for secure remote login and other secure network services over an insecure network.

Brocade Network Advisor (BNA) management is available through a secure browser using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). The SSL security protocol provides data encryption, server authentication, message integrity, and optional client authentication for a TCP/IP connection. Because SSL is built into all major browsers and web servers, installing a digital certificate enables the SSL capabilities
