As I reflect on the last 12 months, it has certainly been an eventful year for Broad. I would like to take this opportunity to offer my personal thanks to all our clients, staff and subcontractors for their ongoing support.As a team, we have faced many challenges and embraced opportunities that have significantly contributed to our overall development and growth of the Group. We will continue to seek new and fresh opportunities and look forward to the future with confidence.

Over the last few months the team has completed some exceptional, high quality projects such as Mt Sheridan Plaza in Cairns and the revitalisation of Bay View Terrace in Claremont, Perth. These projects are featured in this edition and give excellent insight into the depth of Broad’s capabilities.

In the last edition of BroadView we acknowledged Project Manager, Shane Young who was awarded with a Western Australia 2012 Australian Institute of Building (AIB), Professional Excellence in Building Award. I am pleased to announce that Shane was presented with a Certificate of High Commendation at the AIB 2012 National Professional Excellence in Building Awards, in Adelaide, for the Alluvion project in Perth’s CBD.

I am also pleased to announce that Broad was selected as a finalist in the Corporate Business Leading by Example Category, for the Department of Environment and Conservation, 2012 Western Australia Environment Awards. More than 100 high quality entries were received and Broad’s selection as a finalist is fantastic recognition of our high environmental industry standards.

BroadQuality awareness week was held across the company between 20 and 24 August 2012. This year’s message ‘Delivering Competitive Advantage’ was communicated across all Broad offices and sites nationally, to reinforce the importance of quality and making it part of our everyday working life.

As part of Work Safe Australia Week, Broad held their fifth annual BroadSafe Day on Wednesday, 24 October 2012 addressing the importance of our behaviours and how they contribute to achieving zero harm in the workplace. Safety is our number one priority across the company and we will persistently continue our commitment to improvement and to create and sustain an industry where no one is harmed.

Thank you to all that participated in BroadQuality Week and BroadSafe Day. I hope you took away a very important safety and quality message.

Broad will be closing over the Christmas and New Year break from Monday, 24 December 2012 returning Monday, 7 January 2013. I hope the year end brings the opportunity for some well earned time off with

family and friends. I wish you all a safe Christmas and New Year.

BroadAPM is pleased to announce that they have been successful in the tender for Deakin University Student

Accommodation in Waurn Ponds,

Geelong.This is the second project for the Joint

Venture after successfully completing the first ever 5 Star Green Star Design – Multi Unit Residential As Built v1 rating for Monash University, Clayton Campus.

Funded under the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS), the project will provide an additional 311 beds for students studying at Deakin University’s Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus. The project involves the construction of four individual accommodation buildings over a 2HA site.

The completed facility will have extensive landscaping to interconnect the buildings and to provide links to the main university campus. Construction commenced in September 2012 and is expected to be completed by December 2013

Broad Queensland was successful in the tender to construct the North Lakes New Civic Facility for

the Moreton Bay Regional Council

(MBRC).The new facility will meet the needs of

the growing community of Moreton Bay and will include a basement car park (8,400 sqm), library (3,400 sqm), community centre (1,000 sqm), and commercial office space (4,300 sqm), along with the renovation of the existing community building into a young people’s space (1,400 sqm).

Leighton Contractors recently secured the design and construction of the EPC Building Works Project BLD-1 at the Ichthys Gas Processing Plant site near Darwin.This subcontract involves the control complex facility which serves the main processing plant further north.

The Project, which is being undertaken jointly by staff from Leighton Contractors Northern Region and Broad Queensland under an internal teaming agreement within Leighton Contractors, is in design phase and is planned to commence in July 2013, with completion in May 2015

converted their second and third Data

Centre projects in Silverwater and Unanderra in New South Wales for Metronode.

The works for Silverwater includes early works package, remediation works and construction of Stage 1 of SYD02 Data Centre at Egerton St, Silverwater.

The scope of works for Unanderra includes early works package, remediation works and construction of Stage 1 of ILL1 Data Centre at Industrial Rd (Lathe Place) Unanderra, NSW.

Silverwater is expected to reach practical completion in July 2013, followed by Unanderra in August 2013

Mount Sheridan PlazaBroad Queensland recently completed the

transformation of the Mount Sheridan Plaza

situated near Cairns in Northern Queensland.The expansion to Mount Sheridan Plaza provides a high level of retail to the Southern growth areas of Cairns, which have until this time been underserviced, providing a significant subregional retail shopping destination for the community.

The expansion of 14,500 sqm has taken the completed centre to 21,000 sqm with a total of 1,100 car parks. The centre now includes Kmart, Woolworths, Reject Shop, and a new 300 seat food court and a further 40 specialty stores, all complimenting the existing Coles supermarket and 22 stores.

Despite inclement weather conditions and other varying challenges, the Mount Sheridan project team were focused throughout and have completed the project to high safety and quality standards, on time and within budget, delivering the best possible outcome for the client.

Broad commenced the project late 2010 and achieved practical completion early September 2012. The grand opening of the Plaza took place on 6 September 2012 and drew a crowd of over 13,000 people.

Broad’s civil operation reached formal Practical

Completion on Thursday, 27 September 2012 of

the revitalisation of Bay View Terrace’s shopping

precinct, located between Stirling Highway and

Gugeri Street with a tie-in to St. Quentin’s Avenue.The upgrade included demolition of the existing road and footpath, installation of new drainage, including downpipe connection to the shop fronts, new road construction to a modified profile, new multi-function poles, and installation of new trees, brick paving and street furniture. The works have created a shared space for pedestrians and cars and improves the ambience for alfresco diners and shoppers.

On Friday, 26 October 2012, Town of Claremont hosted the ‘Bay View Terrace Festival’ with an official opening and welcome conducted by Western Australian Premier, Hon Colin Barnett. The night included a pop up food market, street entertainment, temporary street art and of course Claremont’s renowned shopping and dining precinct.

on Friday, 31 August 2012.Situated next to the Mooloolah River, Brightwater State School consisted of ten main buildings, three covered areas, two play structures and an oval. The school was completed earlier than anticipated with stage 1a handed over early to allow the Department of Education, Training and Employment to complete fit out of client equipment.

The school proved to be a successful and smooth running build due to the previous knowledge gained by the team on the design and construction of six primary schools and one secondary school as part of the Private Public Partnership with the Queensland Government known as the Aspire Schools consortium.

“Brightwater State School is an inspiring place to learn and a major asset for the local community,” Mr Langbroek said.

“Under the Public Private Partnership arrangement, Aspire Schools Consortium will provide ongoing facilities maintenance until December 2039.

This is an outstanding example of schools and communities working together to provide quality educational facilities for Queensland students,” he said.

The school is sustainable by design and construction and is registered for a 4 Star Green Star rating with the Green Building Council of Australia.

To accommodate more primary school students from the local area, stage two of Brightwater will commence mid 2013 with a final delivery date of 2014.

‘Everybody has a part to play’ in the delivery of quality and the purpose of BroadQuality 2012 was to heighten awareness to Broad staff and subcontractors about the importance of quality in everything we do.

Throughout this dedicated week everyone was asked to review and understand the importance of recognising and practicing quality. A dedicated BroadQuality Day was held on sites and offices nationally during the week and staff and subcontractors were awarded for their commitment to quality

At Broad we are committed to enforcing a heightened level of safety across the business. To coincide with Safe Work Australia Week (21-27 October), Broad held their fifth annual BroadSafe Day on Wednesday, 24 October 2012 to address the importance of behaviour and how it contributes to achieving our goal of zero harm in the workplace.To assist with this goal, Broad developed a set of safety behaviours that clearly set how everyone will and will not behave on our sites and offices. The behaviours set non negotiable expectations of how we must all conduct ourselves and are specifically targeted to three groups; Everyone, Site Managers/Supervisors and Senior Management.

BroadSafe Day introduced the HSE Behaviours to subcontractors and staff, focusing on how ‘Your behaviour makes a difference’. The behaviours hold people accountable for their actions at all levels and will have a profound impact on our journey to zero harm.

On the day, each site acknowledged subcontractors in recognition of outstanding safety behaviours displayed on a Broad project. Broad personnel were also recognised on the day for living Broad’s safety value ‘Safety and Well-being’ and displaying outstanding behaviours. Recipients of the BroadSafe Day awards were presented with a framed certificate and $100 Visa gift voucher.

1. Non negotiable BEHAVIOURS have been developed and are targeted at three main groups; Everyone, Site Supervisors/Managers and Senior Management.

2. Each of the groups has been set a list of BEHAVIOURS linked by the four common Key Element themes of Standards, Communication, Involvement and Risk Management.

3. Each person across Broad’s sites and offices nationally are required to assess themselves against the Everyone BEHAVIOURS. Those in Supervisory or Management roles need to demonstrate the appropriate BEHAVIOURS.

On Friday, 31 August 2012 New Future Alliance (NFA) Safety Manager, Phil Bevan, presented two Community Safety Awareness presentations to over 100 students from Milingimbi School.

The purpose of the presentation was to educate students about the importance of road safety when heavy vehicle trucks travelled on the Island’s roads.

The teachers and families from the community were delighted that NFA offered to deliver such a thorough and engaging program. After the presentation, teachers recapped with the students to see how much they had learnt and they were really surprised with the results. The children communicated what they had learnt through drawings of star pickets with yellow caps and big trucks on the road with children standing clear of the vehicles. The teachers and families were delighted with the retention of the safety messages and how quickly the new found knowledge has spread to everyone in their community

NFA Community Day - Ngukurr

Throughout the Package 10 works in Ngukurr, New Future Alliance (NFA) employees and contractors held various fundraising activities to raise money for the purchase of funeral lowering equipment for the community.

On Wednesday, 12 September 2012 New Future Alliance, on behalf of employees and subcontractors, organised a special barbeque function to present the funeral lowering equipment to the community. Board Member for the Yugul Mangi Corporation and a Representative of the Northern Land Council (NLC), Bobby Nunggumajbarr accepted the gift on the community’s behalf. He spoke of the great work he had witnessed and that the team will always be welcomed back.

Speeches were also made by NFA Safety Manager, Phil Bevan and NFA Package Manager, John Williams. During a demonstration of how the equipment worked, there was an overwhelming amount of emotion and gratitude shown from the community members and Traditional Owners.

The function was a great success and the community members were very appreciative of the fundraising efforts made to assist in the purchase of the equipment. The gift has left a lasting legacy and one that will greatly assist the community for years to come. This is a great achievement by the Package 10 team

Kari’s Tour De Freedom 1000

On Tuesday, 23 October, 57 cyclists plus support crew departed Esperance and made their way through the Great Southern and South West regions before finishing in Perth on Sunday, 28 October 2012. Kari’s Tour de Freedom 1000 (named after Broad’s Founder and Managing Director Kari Rummukainen who sadly passed away last year) took six days to complete, covering approximately 200 km per day.

Riders take part in this demanding 1000 km ride to raise much needed funds for Teen Challenge WA to assist in their commitment to help in the rehabilitation of young people with drug, alcohol and life control problems.

The ride was not without its challenges, not only did riders face tough terrains, they also encountered tough weather conditions such as the cold, head-on winds, rain and 30 degree plus heat.

“Riding into the wind and rain was difficult but there was great teamwork within the group. I felt safe riding with the experienced guys who really protected the whole team”, said Leighton Contractors Executive General Manager, Mike Metcalfe.

at Adelaide Oval Function Centre on Friday, 21 September.Shane progressed to the national awards after claiming an award at the West Australian Chapter Dinner back in July, for his exemplary leadership in the Commercial Construction $100 million plus category, for the Alluvion project in Perth’s CBD. A great achievement for Shane and the rest of the Alluvion project team


Despite the challenges, the team banded together knowing that their hard work would assist those who face much harder challenges in life. This year, the team had an ambitious target and were pleased to announce that they had raised $400,000 for Teen Challenge. This is a fantastic achievement and the generosity will go a long way to those that need a helping hand.

Work on the new Domestic Terminal – Terminal 2 is tracking well with tiling and painting nearing completion. The baggage handling installation is complete and commissioning works are well underway. External landscaping is well advanced and brick paving has commenced around the terminal

The tower crane has been removed from site, signalling the completion of bulky works. An onsite façade prototype signoff is due over the coming week. This is a significant step that will allow progression of the highly complex faceted rain screen that forms the decorative face to the building.

Interior works are progressing well with partition and painting works nearing completion to all five levels. Interior fitout trades such as joinery, vinyl and carpet have commenced. Webcam overlooking the site is available for viewing at: http://broadconstructioncams.com/view/

The concrete structure at Work//Zone is now complete. Both Building A and B have the plant room slabs poured and the main mechanical plant is in place.

The glass façade on Building A has progressed up to level 5 and Building B is on level 3. Over the past few weeks the installation of the façade has made very good progress.

Services and finishes to the office levels have progressed well with the first of the office space taking shape. This is all being done as an integrated fitout and part of the total project.

Structural steel which will form part of the roof and lift shaft steel is programmed to start in the next few weeks.

With Christmas fast approaching, the site team and contractors are fully focused on the milestones that need to be achieved

T1 International Arrivals Expansion, Perth Airport, WA

Works are well underway on three separable portions across the site. A number of key milestones have been delivered, including the completion and handover of the new escape passage on Level 1. Demolition works to the external canopies have also been completed allowing for the commencement of footings. Demolition works have also commenced on Level 1.

The installation of structural steel in separable portion two will allow the external glass facade to be fitted in the new retail area on the ground floor, arrivals hall.

As the airport must continue to operate without interruption, extensive pre-planning is required to ensure work continues with minimal disruption to tenants and passengers

Gracewood Kellyville Community Living Units, NSW

Joinery and floor finishes have now commenced to ground floor Community Care, Respite. Tiling, door installation and joinery to level 1, 2 and 3 Dorrigo building is complete. This has allowed the commencement of service fitout and painting to commence to the three levels.

Internal wall and ceiling linings have been completed up to level 2 Bindarri, and waterproofing and tiling of wet areas has commenced to these two levels. Service rough is completed to level 3 and 4 Bindarri and level 4 Dorrigo.

Landscape works to the Cumberland Woodlands is now underway

Remote Indigenous Housing Program, WA

With the completion of package 4 the team is now fully engaged in the new undertaking of package 5 which consists of 15 new houses for the Ardyaloon community in the remote North West. Broad are working closely with the communities and are continuing to build ongoing and lasting relationships

Riverside Waterbank, WA

Braithwaite St is now almost complete, with only linemarking and the last of the brick paved footpath left to complete. Hand over to the client will be before the Australia vs. South Africa Test Match at the WACA

Strategic Indigenous Housing and Infrastructure Program, NT

Works are now well underway on the most recently awarded packages of Numbulwar, Millingimbi, Gapuwiyak and Hermannsburg, with the first completed new houses handed over in Numbulwar in October. Works at Package 10 (Ngukkur) were completed in September which included 59 new houses and 282 refurbished houses. NFA have arranged and facilitated a sign on day with the Roper Shire and Western Desert Mines in an endeavour to place our past and present trainees in ongoing employment with these organisations. The alliance continues to engage with the communities to employ local trainees and where possible to provide ongoing employment opportunities

Forward Works, Perth Airport, WA

Nine of the 11 below ground concrete foundations have been constructed to date. The temporary diversion of a second existing gas main will be completed shortly, allowing for the service installation through this area to be finalised

Ormeau State School, Stage 3, QLD

The music building is well on track with internal trades starting in September with completion due by mid December. The Performing Arts building is on program with roofing works completed in September. GLA building has been delayed due to bad ground conditions and the Broad design team are working hard to obtain the most cost effective solution for the client

AP LNG Construction Camps, QLD

Handover of first phase and communal facilities occurred early September 2012. Works on Stage 2 and Stage 3 include 100 beds each respectively

Palm Island, QLD

Lama Lama Earthworks are proceeding well and drill and blast activities have been completed. Installation of services is underway and concreting pavements to commence once service installation works are completed.

Outstation Bulk earthworks are still underway and drilling for the proposed drill and blast has commenced. Works associated with pump stations and rising mains are underway and service reticulation within the site will occur once the drill and blast operations are completed

Bellbird and Collingwood Park, Stage 2, QLD

Site works are progressing well and Broad are on target to complete the works by late December 2012. Overall, Broad is 85 per cent complete with the Bellbird works and 80 per cent for the Collingwood Park works. The final fitout of services and completion of finishes is well underway and landscaping is due to start shortly. Commissioning of all the buildings is scheduled for the first week in December 2012

PTA Railway, WA

Works have commenced at Queens Park railway station with the establishment of site offices and compound. Drainage installation and demolition has commenced on the platform. All movement of plant and materials is undertaken at night during the shutdown between the last train at night and the first train in the morning
