Dear Parent or Guardian,
The adolescence years are marked by a rollercoaster ride of emotions—difficult for stu-
dents, their parents, and educators. It is easy to read depression as normal adolescent turmoil;
however, depression (among the most common of mental illnesses) appear to be occurring at a
much earlier age. Depression, which is treatable, is a leading risk factor for suicide. In addition,
self-injury has become a growing problem among youth.
To proactively address these issues, Broadmoor Junior High School is offering depression
awareness and suicide prevention training as part of the SOS “Signs of Suicide" Prevention Program.
The program aims to increase help-seeking by students concerned about themselves or a friend.
Our goals in participating in this program are straight forward:
To help our students understand that depression is a treatable illness
To explain that suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs as a result of untreated depression
To provide students training in how to identify serious depression and potential suicidality in
themselves or a friend
To impress upon youth that they can help themselves or a friend by taking the simple step of
talking to a responsible adult about their concerns
To help students know whom in the school they can turn to for help, if they need it
During advisory in the first week of October – Students will be discussing the SOS “Signs of Suicide” and watching videos concerning the topic. You will be receiving a copy of the Parent Newsletter and Referral Resource List so that you have information and resources about depression and its related risks from your student during the first week of October. If you do not receive this and would like a copy, please contact the office.

FREE LUNCH FOR ALL COMMUNITY ELIGIBILITY PROVISION (CEP) PROGRAM
What is CEP and what does it mean to my family?
CEP is an option available to schools participating in the National School Lunch and Breakfast
programs. All enrolled students of Pekin Public Schools District 108 are eligible to receive 1
breakfast and 1 lunch at no charge to your household. Your children will be able to participate in
these meal programs without having to pay a fee or submit an application.
What if my student wants an extra meal or wants to order ala carte items?
Your student will be charged for any food or milk purchases, other than the 1 breakfast or lunch per
day.
What if I have applied money to my student’s lunch account?
If you want a refund of unused money on your student’s lunch account, you may request a refund.
However, any money left on a lunch account will be applied to any outstanding fees prior to a
refund being issued. You may check your students’ lunch account balances, purchases to date and
any other outstanding fees in Skyward Family Access.
I have a balance and would like a refund. What should I do?
Soon you should receive an email from District 108 with more information on the CEP program and
how to request a refund.
Currently, there are many students who are in need of food and
additional resources over the weekend. Food is being put
together on weekends by United Methodist Church in Pekin.
To get involved, contact Broadmoor for a list of donation items
or to help with packaging, contact United Methodist Church: [email protected]
Box Tops 4 Education
Our CBI (Community Based Instruction) Program is partially
funded by Box Tops 4 Education. Each week students in
this Life Skills program go into the community to learn
valuable skills that they can apply everyday. Box Tops help
them to continue these trips and use what they have learned
in the classroom to interact successfully outside of school.
Please collect as many Box Tops as you can and send them
with your student to turn in at advisory.
The students in CBI have made this a contest—
Each month the class with the most Box Tops collected will
earn a Party hosted by the CBI program.
Thank you for your support.
