Welcome to the 2nd edition of Broadcast! Well were you among the 900 folks who squeezed into the

Caird Hall to see the music legend Graham Kendrick lead us

into worship with songs from his collection over the past thirty

years? It truly was a great evening.

The first edition of Broadcast was well received with all

5000 copies distributed around the City in record time.

A big thank you to all who passed on such positive and

constructive feedback. Copies were received so readily

that we are most certainly going to have to look at

increasing the circulation soon.

Please remember we want this to be a magazine that is

representative of what is going on in church in Dundee.

We can only do this if you send us information and so

please contact us with stories and happenings you have.

I’d like to thank all those who are advertising in the

magazine as this helps make the whole thing possible!

As you will see from the contents of this edition there is such

a lot going on in the next quarter. You will see from the cover

of the magazine that we are welcoming the world famous

WATOTO Choir in December and International supergroup

Delirious to Dundee in November. Exciting or what!?

We are called to live as salt and light in this world.

At D4C it is our prayer “Help us Lord Jesus to be salt and light

in this City! “As a body of churches in Dundee we have one

thing in common that sets aside any differences; to see the

name of Jesus lifted high over Dundee and to tell the people

that they are in need of a saviour. And they have a glorious

one in Jesus! How can they believe in the one they don’t

know? C’mon Dundee - lets win Dundee For Christ!

Together and with God’s strength we can surely do it!

Dundee For Christ are very proud to present the world famous WATOTO Children’s Choir. The Watoto Children’s Choir played an incredible sell out thirty consecutive nights at the Edinburgh Tattoo in 2006.

Watoto Concerts raise awareness of the plight of 2 million children in Uganda left parentless as a result of War and Disease.

Uganda has endured brutal dictators, the scourge of civil war and the deadly AIDS epidemic. An estimated 2 million children in Uganda have been orphaned by these calamities, 880,000* of them as a result of AIDS alone. (*UNAIDS

stats) The country is still reeling from a past of corruption, brutality and oppression. The economy is improving, but still struggling. Social services are scarce, water and sanitation systems are unavailable to most, and poverty and disease are prevalent.

DUNDEEFORCHRISTFEATURE

Watoto Children’s ChoirEvery day, scores of children are orphaned and abandoned in the streets. The government is not equipped to provide care for them. Private babies homes and adoption centers can’t keep up and are themselves unable to provide long term care for a child. This is the reality that is Uganda. The situation is dire. The need is great. But the future is changing!

Watoto was born out of this need. It is addressing this crisis and is providing hope for the nation.

The mission of Watoto is to raise the next generation of Ugandan leaders by placing parentless children in families where the necessary love, care, spiritual discipleship and physical needs are provided. Our goal is to equip these precious children with the essential moral values and life skills that will enable them to make a significant and lasting impact.

Dundee For Christ are hosting the Watoto Children’s Choir for two nights: Friday 21st December at Chalmers Ardler Church 7.30pm. Saturday 22nd December at Broughty Ferry New Kirk 7.30pm.

Tickets are free (maximum 4 tickets per person) and are available from CLC and Wesley Owen bookshops in Dundee.

Nicole is a nine year old desperate for love. Her mum has serious mental health issues and is unable to listen to her, encourage her, or set boundaries. Her home is smelly, her bed dirty, her world lonely. Her cat, of course is her best friend and she loves going to the after school club at her local church. The adults there seem to care for her, and the best bit is playing games.

Eighteen year old Sam is not out at college or enjoying her youth, but is isolated, depressed, smoking cannabis to calm herself down and is at her wits end with her energetic three year old. With no family support she’s desperate for practical help. There are plenty of churches in her area, but she’s never been to one. Why would she? She’s too busy struggling to survive.

When was the last time you met Nicole or Sam? Did you see them in the street? Did you welcome them to your church? Did you offer a helping hand? Did you pray? Would you have the confidence to love them as your neighbour and tell them about His great love for them?

Scripture Union Scotland is committed to facilitating training to support churches and volunteers who are working with vulnerable youngsters like Nicole and Sam. The theme for 2008 is Beauty for Ashes, based on Isaiah 61. As God’s people we know that He offers new life, healing, hope and a future. But why are some youngsters so hardened to love? How can we help them connect with God and others when their past experiences leave them feeling hurt and rejected? Will you join us to seek God and grapple with such issues together?

We are delighted that Jaqui Foggitt, (Service Manager at Cross Reach Counselling Lothians) is leading the morning session on the effects of broken relationships, trauma and abuse on children and young people. In the afternoon, seminar leaders with exciting stories to share will help us explore how to reach vulnerable youngsters where they’re at, and introduce them to Jesus.

Whether you’re an expert or an enquirer, we look forward to learning with you and being encouraged together.

When I read this article it didn’t surprise me as we see the reality of poverty in children’s lives every week through the work of The Attic. Every week we run a kidz klub where we bus in 80 - 100 kids from the housing estates in Dundee; Menzieshill, Charleston, St. Mary’s, Kirkton, Fintry, Mid-Craigie and the Hilltown. Now don’t get me wrong some of these children come from good homes with good parents but the sad truth is that many don’t. Many have one parent if they are lucky and some neither. Neglect is the strong poverty that grips many of these children’s lives. Physical neglect where often kids come out without sufficient clothes on for the elements or dirty clothes. Neglect where children are hungry because they haven’t had a proper meal again. Neglect where children haven’t had an encouraging word,

a smile, a cuddle from a loving parent. Neglect stares us in the face every week through the eyes of these children. As the church, as Christians we must respond to this need.

Jesus loved children and in Mark 9:35 he took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them, “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me.”

Do we welcome children as Jesus did? Or are we like the disciples in Matthew 19 pushing the children aside as we have more important things to focus on? Jesus went on to rebuke his disciples: Matthew 19:14 Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

We need to reach out to the lost children of our city with the same love that God has given us.

Every week our team of committed volunteers visit over 260 children at their homes. We do this because we believe we need to go and bring the love of God to these children. We can’t wait until it’s too late. Yes we need to work with teenagers and we do. Yes we need to work with adults and we do but we need to invest in our children now! Bill Wilson, Founder of Metro Ministries said this:“It’s easier to build boys and girls than it is to repair men and women”. We need to value children the way Jesus values them.

The Attic is one way in which Christians are reaching out on a consistent basis to the children of our city. We are looking for more volunteers who will stand in the gap and be willing to work

with us week in week out and to have the privilege of telling and demonstrating the gospel of Jesus Christ to these needy children of our city. There are many ways in which you can help us through the work of the Attic. Become a volunteer at our kidz klub, take on a home visit round, administration, stewarding, prayer, give financially.

Can you help us? Then please get in touch even if it is just to visit so you can see for yourself what God is doing.

What is Hope‘08? Hope ‘08 has been born out of a vision held by the organizations Soul Survivor, The Message, and Youth For Christ. All of these organizations have, in recent years, been part of citywide mission events such as The Message 2000 (Manchester), Soul in the City (London 2004), MerseyFest and LoveBristolFest (both ‘05) and have been on the frontline of impacting urban communities through both word and action.

After Soul in the City these agencies began a conversation which grew to involve a wide range of denominations, networks and national charities. This conversation concluded that if we all work together, across the whole nation that focused mission is possible, even in situations that have seemed hopeless in the past. The ideas that are still emerging indicate that churches of all types and traditions can partner with other churches, with various Christian agencies and with local authorities and the Police to make a real impact on their communities.

‘Hope’ proposes to support this on-going work, by facilitating intensified, united, focused prayer and a year of activities, communicating the Gospel through words and actions, creating a lasting legacy of both physical and spiritual change in the lives of

communities and individuals, that can build a base to lead to much closer community involvement for churches in the year to come.

Supporting Local Churchesacross the UK in their commitment to serve and witness to their communities

Encouraging Collaborationbetween churches and agencies in reaching out to their communities

Resourcing and Traininglocal churches to develop their ability to engage with their communities on a long term basis

Impacting Individuals and Communitieswith the Gospel through words and actions during 2008.

How is Hope ‘08 organised? This is entirely down to the local Christian community. Central organising is down to a minimum, so that in different places an appropriate plan for that area can be formulated. It is not an event where a formula is placed upon the area, or where previous work is not acknowledged. It builds on and encourages faithful gospel work, which has been taking place in Dundee for many years!

Hope ‘08: Whole Church, Whole Nation, Whole Year

Hope ‘08 is a cross denominational, outreach potential for the whole of the UK. ‘Hope’ is intended to provide churches of

all shapes and sizes throughout the UK with a fresh opportunity to work together across their

communities over a twelve month period. Dundee’s local ‘Hope Champion’,

Dave Morris, explains more.

A loose framework for the year has been suggested, but the main push of Hope ‘08 is to show to this nation that the message of the Church is still coherent and focused, whatever the differences in style and expression.

This framework is:Fresh Hope - lifestyle courses, or other themes linking in with times of life re-starting.

The Big Hope - reclaiming and proclaiming the message of Easter.

Hope Where You Live - expressing the love of God through action, giving a chance to connect with your local community.

Hope Explored - linking in with the many different types of Christian faith exploration courses that take place across the country in the autumn.

The Gift of Hope - the message of Christmas.

Churches that get involved are committing to what they feel is appropriate for their size, local community and structure.

How can we get involved? As a church:

• be involved by bringing events that run annually in your church under the Hope banner, to stand together with the various events happening locally and nationally.

• be involved by thinking bigger - size, church involvement - with the events that already happen in your church.

• be involved by organising new events as a church.

• be involved by organising new events together as churches in your area.

As an individual:

• talk to your church/organisation leaders - the whole aim and emphasis of Hope is to work more together, so lone ranger style is not the way to go!

• pray for the year, and into the future, in all the possibilities for outreaches and connections that could further the name of Christ in Dundee.

If you’d like to know more, head to www.hope08scotland.org.uk, or send me an email: [email protected]

Here’s to a year that proclaims His glory, and to a louder proclamation in Dundee!

Picture this: Sunrise at 6am on theAmazon River. Villagers gatheringon the river bank to watch as wetry to find somewhere to tie theboat up on a steep muddy bank.Girls are clambering down to fetchwater from the river to take backto their huts for the days cooking.A group of us on the boat gatheron the deck to read God’s Wordtogether and sing praises in Spanishand in English. As the heat of theday rapidly increases we eattogether on the deck, 24 of us,8 from the UK, the rest Peruvians. After we have cleared the tablesthe villagers start to clamber downthe banks and across the gangplanks to get onto the boat. We welcome them.

This is the start of another days workon one of the Amazon Hope boats, run by the Scottish charity, The VineTrust in partnership with ScriptureUnion Peru. The boats aim to servethe medical and dental needs of

up to 100,000 people living alongthe banks of three tributaries ofthe Amazon in one of the remotestareas of the world. The peopleliving here have little or no accessto care and these refurbishedex-naval tenders carry doctors, dentists, nurses, pharmacists, malaria technicians, midwives andothers to deliver health care rightat their doorstep. A volunteer UKteam of 8 healthcare professionalswork alongside the project’s ownprofessionals and helpers for twoweeks at a time and since the firstUK team in 2004 much has beenachieved. Until this month only oneboat was working – the AmazonHope. Last year the Amazon Hope 2arrived having crossed the Atlanticand the original boat went off tobe lengthened and refurbished. By the end of this year both boats will be serving this area of Amazoniaand will be a major part of the localhealthcare system.

I cannot begin to tell you howutterly amazing it is to be part of thisproject. I went out last August (andwas part of the Amazon Heartbeatdocumentary) and returned againin June of this year. God willing I willreturn in June 2008. It is hard workbut the rewards are immense – thesmile of relief when you have beenable to help someone who mayhave had to suffer for months, thenew friends, the teamwork, sailingon the Amazon, the rainbows wesee almost every day reminding usof God’s love for us all.

Medical teams are needed almostevery month – if you are interestedplease either contact me directly([email protected]), orcheck their website vinetrust.org,or even search for Amazon Hopeon Youtube as one of our localcontacts (Martin Bone) puts muchinformation on there.

If you are not medically qualifiedbut would still like to help theproject then why not get involvedin a work party, helping with thestreet children’s project. Whethera skilled construction worker or anenthusiastic volunteer anyone 18 orover who can hammer a nail, laybricks or labour is welcome to applyfor a Vine Trust Work Team. Theimportant thing is enthusiasm anddetermination for the job at hand.

You’re about to embark on another tour - what can we expect from this one? It’s a new batch of songs and we want to experiment with them and see what they sound like live. It’s a good bunch of tunes and we’re very excited about the album and about the tour. We’ve never been as far up as Dundee either and we’re really looking forward to coming to play for you guys.

You did a live album with Hillsong a few years back and you made the comment that this was the revival generation - what are your thoughts on that now, have they changed? No, well not essentially. I still think that this is the revival generation but the way that revival will look has changed. Everyone is now beginning to realise that it’s more about addressing the social needs of the community around us and being part of the miracle rather than praying for it to happen with someone else. We need to begin to work out how the churches will play a part in this.

And what part do you see Delirious? playing in this?I believe that we have been given a microphone and a bigger stage to speak to many people. It’s not all about playing music and gigs but also about bringing these issues, and others like it to the forefront and making people aware of it.

You’ll have heard about the Hope ‘08 initiative which is getting churches working together & reaching out to the community by pledging ‘hours of kindness’. What would you say to young people who aren’t quite sure if they want to get involved?Well first of all it’s a great initiative and the fact that it’s so regional and localised means that it has such great potential. It’s all about joining people together, about bringing churches together with their communities.

That’s essentially what it’s all about, community. This is for people of all ages to get involved with and without their involvement it might not work.

If you could give one verse of scripture to the young people around the country what would it be?Isaiah 61. It says that the spirit of the sovereign Lord is on me and I have been anointed to preach good news to the poor. You can continue reading it and it will be a good one to keep bookmarked in your Bibles.

Once Delirious? is all over and done with, what would you like to see written on the tombstone so to speak... how would you like to be remembered?“He was a friend”Expand a bit more on that if you can.Well relationships are the important things in it all. They’re more important than careers and music and all the other things that will inevitably fade. They are what matter... the place where you can make a real impact with people.

Why is there a ? at the end of Delirious? The dictionary definition for delirious means being wildly excited about something and the reason for the ? is to communicate to people that you’ll never really know what Delirious? really are, it’s always a mystery and it can mean different things to different people.

What would be your challenge to the church of today, be it as vague or specific as you wish.To take down the walls and get into your community. You can’t take a city by storm if you’re not in it.

St Andrew’s Family ProjectWhat does the St Andrew’s Project hope to achieve? Kathryn Sidey, Project leader advises me “We are trying to provide a non statutory facility where those parents can meet together, receive support and help if wanted, and where they are encouraged to develop positive interactions and play skills with their children. We look towards encouraging the young parents to use mainstream facilities as appropriate. eg. swimming pools/parks/places of interest around Dundee and eventually mainstream pre-five facilities. When appropriate, opportunities for extending their own education are also discussed.”

Sue Rayner notes “Girls are coming in with all sorts of issues. Many of the issues often relate to housing and access to affordable decent housing. As an example of the help we offer we can connect young families with the services that they require or who know of a service that can assist. We access services to support young families for the families as often young parents don’t know how to access services. This sort of practical help can mean so much to these girls.”

If you are not familiar with the St Andrew’s Project, the overall aim is;

“ To show God’s love, care and compassion for others in a practical way by developing a welcoming, non judgemental parent support facility for single parents 21 years and under and their children.”

In 2004 St Andrew’s church identified “Outreach Work” as a first priority for the church’s development wanting to show that as a congregation our witness to God - His love and His care towards all people, was not just confined to Sundays when the church was open for services.

As a city centre church what could St Andrew’s do to help people who frequent the city centre?

Why this Family Support Project?Wander around the city centre and note how many very young mothers there are on their own pushing buggies. Annually in Dundee there are 400 babies born to teenage mums. Many are given no family support in what we must agree is one of the most difficult jobs - caring for a young baby or toddler. An elder with Dundee City’s Early Years and Childcare Development Team did some researching into why those young people were not using ordinary Mother and Toddler Groups and Child and Family Centres.

Ian Black of D4C recently spoke

with Kathryn Sidey, Project Leader

and Sue Rayner, Project Worker of St Andrew’s Family Project.

If you haven’t heard of the

project read on as this is a work

that is truly demonstrating

the love of God to young mums

throughout Dundee.

How different or similar is your new album compared to your previous album? The new album is called Psalms Revisited. Back in 1985, I began a series of recordings of tunes I had written to the Psalms, and I suppose that’s what really took things off for me - I’ve been singing them around the world for the past 22 years! I’ve recorded something nearly every year over that time, but this year I thought I’d get back to my roots, and take a fresh look at some of the original tunes.

Any interesting collaborations on the new album? I’ve enjoyed recording in different places over the years - England, Scotland, Ireland, Norway, Australia and the U.S. Recently I made friends with a guy called Buzz Cason who runs a wonderful old studio in Nashville, and he invited me to record there, and I fell in love with the set-up. The place is steeped in history, with many many hits having been recorded within its walls [Olivia Newton John did ‘Sam’ there!], but I think it was just the friendliness of the welcome, and the speed at which I got great sounds that made it so good. I had the chance to work with some wonderful musicians, including drummer Jim Thistle, who toured with the Dixie Chicks, pianist Eric Bikales who worked with Neil Sedaka for many years, and a young backing vocalist and violinist called Caitlin Evanson, currently on tour with Michael W.Smith. She’s incredibly talented - the violin solo on Ps126 was done in one take, and it seems to be everyone’s favourite track!

What sort of size of audiences have you played to and where have you been playing recently?I never really play to big numbers - I did manage to fill the Usher Hall in Edinburgh ten years ago, and the ultimate highlight was playing to 37,000 at a Billy Graham event in Glasgow in ’91, but these days it’s a lot smaller! Over the past year I’ve been mostly in the UK, but I’ve played in Switzerland and done a concert tour of New Zealand, with the Christian fundraising agency Tearfund. New Zealand has consistently been a place where I seem to be well received - I’ve been 9 times I think!

You’re playing in Dundee this December, what sort of concert should we expect? This a simple singer/songwriter evening - I can’t try to lure people with false promises! No big band I’m afraid. What people do tell me is that the amount of sound I seem to get from one acoustic guitar is surprising. I quite often have people coming up afterwards and saying, is there some kind of machine plugged into your guitar that gives all those rhythms? And the answer is no, it’s just something I do with my hand [don’t even know what it is myself now!]

This concert will also feature supporting artist Jane Barratt - a Dundee girl with a stunning voice and fantastic songwriting talent.

Church RepsDundee For Christ are looking for people to act as church reps. What would this involve I hear you ask? Well! Here are some responsibilities the D4C church rep would be asked to fulfil:• You would help co-ordinate the distribution of BROADCAST to all

members of your church. Posting 5000 magazines around the city would be too expensive and making sure the magazines are effectively distributed will be crucial.

• Act as a point of reference for D4C to get information included in your church bulletin and magazine.

• Make announcements in church about upcoming Dundee For Christ events (optional – if you feel confident enough!)

• Coordinate a D4C visit to your church.

Do you think you could help? If so your help would be so appreciated. Please give us a call if can help or you want any more information.
