Lighting Control Connectivity

Belden® DMX-512® Lighting Control CableApplication: DMX lighting control cable is based on RS-485 data cable, 120Ω impedance and a capacitance of 12 pF/ft. or less. Many lighting designers use 100Ω cables for DMX because those cables are smaller, cheaper and easier to find. The impedance mismatch and higher capacitance will make them distance-limited compared to true RS-485. Among the 100Ω cable types are the premise/data cables such as Category 5, Category 5e, Category 6 and Category 6A. Using this cable for DMX is not the same as lighting control run with Ethernet, which use these same Category cables but in a completely different protocol (i.e. Ethernet) with a 100m distance. Others use standard microphone cables or similar to run DMX. As these cables vary widely in impedance and capacitance, they are poor choices for DMX and only run effectively for very short distances, if at all. Three-pin XLR connectors have been specifically prohibited in the DMX standard since 2004, but many still use them.

Belden® F, BNC and RCA Double Bubble® and HD Brilliance compression connectors for HD coaxial cables require no soldering and crimping of pins and ferrules. The 1-piece compression connector provides easy and quick termination and the 360° radial compression forms an environmental seal around the cable without deforming the cables inner dialiectric insulation and outer sheath. This allows for true 75 Ohm perfromance and maximum return loss.

Strip the cable to the correct dimensions using the stripping tool (PS59/6/RGB or PSA59/6), insert the cable into the connector, pushing the center pin through the body of the connector into the correct position. Use the compression tool (CPLCRBC-BR) to compress the connector onto the cable, resulting in a simple, fast termination with no damage or deformation to the cable dielectric insulation resulting in superior peformance.

Application: The LEMO 3K.93C connectors with keys (W) were developed to meet the critical requirements of the new generation of digital HDTV cameras.

– security of the Push-Pull latching system – Conforms to the Japanese ARIB technical report BTA S-1005B, to the ANSI/SMPTE 304 M-1998 and 311M-1998 standards and to the European EBU Technical Recommendation R100-1999.

– Fitted with the standard LEMO F2 fibre optic contacts. – Qualified for use in UL approved equipment such as those specified in UL 1419 «Profes-sional Video and Audio Equipment».

Belden® Ethernet Solutions & HD BaseTWhy You Can’t Ignore Category 6A Anymore

Category 6A twisted-pair copper solutions received much attention when they fi rst hit the marketplace in 2005, and again when the ANSI/TIA-568-B.2-10 Category 6A standard was published in April of 2008. However, the past de-cade has witnessed a slow adoption of Category 6A in the enterprise environ-ment, especially in the LAN. Early implementations were relatively expensive due to installation, fi eld testing and power consumption.But times are changing. Data rates continue to climb and more devices than ever are connected to the network. Emerging applications are demanding the higher performance and faster speeds supported by Category 6A cabling. For these reasons, industry standards that previously only recommended Catego-ry 6A cabling for data centres now also recommend it for most LAN installa-tions

We are seeing a greater need for bandwidth-intensive applications that re-quire speeds beyond 1000 Mb/s in today’s LAN. Backbone speeds in the data center are migrating to 25, 40 and even 100 Gb/s speeds; horizontal LANs need to keep up or risk being a bottleneck to productivity. The need to quickly transfer larger fi les, such as medical imaging, high-defi nition streaming video, high-end graphics and surveillance video are starting to task Category 5e and Category 6 networks running 100BASE-TX and even 1000BASE-T. For example, in the healthcare environment a set of medical images for a single patient totaling 9000 MB takes about a minute to download over a 1000 Mb/s network, but only seven seconds over a 10 Gb/s network. In an emergency situation, the time diff erence can be critical.

Next-Generation Wi-Fi: The next-generation IEEE 802.11ac wireless standard approved in December 2013 includes Wave 1 and Wave 2 devices. While Wave 1 devices can be supported by Category 6 or high-end Category 5e cabling, Wave 2 devices will require data rates close to 2 Gb/s in the imme-diate future, and 4 Gb/s in the next few years. The IEEE 802.3 Next Generation Enterprise Access BASE-T PHY (NGEABT) Study Group has begun develop-ing 2.5GBASE-T and 5GBASE-T applications. With more wireless devices than ever before and the need for fast, reliable connections, nearly all enterprise businesses plan to deploy next-generation IEEE 802.11ac Wi-Fi within the next few years. For new installations, the best (and possibly only) viable solution to support Wave 2 802.11ac wireless devices and higher speed 802.11ax devices in the future is Category 6A.

4-Pair PoE: The IEEE 802.3bt task group is currently developing the next-generation Power-over- Ethernet standard (4PPoE) to deliver power more effi ciently using all four pairs in a cable. This consumes less power in the cable because the current is divided over all four pairs. It can also deliver higher power levels to devices with a smaller temperature rise inside a cable bundle, avoiding poor transmission performance.

HDBaseT: Introduced in 2010 as specifi cation 1.0, HDBaseT networking tech-nology enables transmitting uncompressed full HD video, audio, Ethernet, control and power up to 100 m over balanced twisted-pair cabling with modu-lar RJ-45 connectors. HDBaseT is uniquely positioned to reduce the cost and complexity of delivering HD video, and will drive adoption of next-generation 4K resolution at roughly four times the resolution of 1080p. In bundled cable confi gurations, Category 5e UTP cables can only support HDBaseT for dis-tances of up to 10 m; Category 6 UTP can only support HDBaseT to 40 m. To achieve the full 100 m distance benefi t over UTP, Category 6A UTP is required. The HDBaseT specifi cation 2.0 released in 2013 also enables up to 100W of power delivery over 4-pair cables for powering HDTVs and displays at dis-tances up to 100 m. The application has the same aforementioned 4PPoE temperature rise considerations. Both HDBaseT 1.0 and 2.0 specifi cations were recently approved by the IEEE to eventually become IEEE 1911.1 and IEEE 1911.2.

In addition, IP convergence is taking hold in the enterprise, with everything from security and life-safety systems to lighting and building automation sys-tems connecting to the network. Category 6A has the performance to transmit the increased amount of information for these systems.

Bonded-Pair Design Means Installable Performance

The consistency of UTP cable can determine its transmission distance. Physical characteristics, such as the cable’s conductor-to-conductor spacing relationship along the full length of the cable, can aff ect how far a signal can be carried at a given frequency without excessive attenuation due to return loss.

Belden® Bonded-Pair Cat5e and Cat6 cables maintain their impedance and return loss performance when fl exed and handled in rugged harsh environments. Bonded-Pairs are the result of Belden’s patented design that bonds the individual insulated conductors together along the full length of the cable. The cable therefore exhibits a uniform conductor-to-conductor spacing relationship along its longitudinal axis that assures consistent impedance characteristics.
