What the hell is that?IVEN the amount of time I spend boring people to death with my theories about how manufacturers of electric cars have all got it wrong: “ They should be producing something cheap and light not just trying to carbon copy pet-

rol cars”, “They should make all the batteries interchangeable”, “They should stop trying to make cars that do 120mph and concentrate on light slow vehicles to go shopping in or get you to the nearest train station”, “ They should all be taken out and hung blah blah blah”. Well, given all that its not surprising that I got pretty interested in the new Renault Twizzy. Finally a major manufacturer is trying something slightly different. Thanks to the eco travel network www.ecotravelnetwork.co.uk there are a good few of these little beasties that you can hire around the Hay, Brecon, Aber-gavenny area. I went and borrowed one from Drover Bike Hire in Hay (they have a lovely new bike shop, Drovers Cycles, Forest Road, Hay on Wye) on a particularly freezing January weekend. First impressions? Well it looks like a cross between a 1960s sketch of ‘the car of the future’ and a rather upmarket mobility scooter. You cant help noticing the upswinging spar-rows wing doors and the fact that its got no windows (brrrr). It’s an ab-solute doddle to drive – pretty much the same as a dodgem car and out on the road it feels like a GoKart. Although super quiet at slow speed, once it gets rolling there is a fair amount of wind, tyre and general flapping plastic noise. However it buzzes along happily at 35-45mph and once I’d got the hang of it, there was time to start worrying about whether it was going to get me home. As a seasoned electric bike fanatic I am very used to the ‘running out of battery anxiety’ but at least on a bike you can pedal home. In an electric car you really don’t want to run out in some embarrassing situation so the anxiety is doubled. The Twizzy has two simple gauges to help calm the nerves. One is a large picture of a battery that is slowly emptying as you drive. The other is more like the average fuel consumption figure you get on lots of German cars. This tells you how many miles you have left based on the way you are driving. Put your foot down and it plummets, but go down a long hill using the Twizzy’s regenerative braking and it suddenly shoots up again. My mileage gauge had started in Hay at 42, but by the time I got to Almeley on the backroads it was showing 22 . So I soft pedaled it up to Lyonshall and on the hill down to the village it regained a few miles, so I was back at 24 but by then I figured I’m only 8 miles from home, I can give it some wellie! By the time I got back to Presteigne I was starting to enjoy myself and as the weekend progressed I got to like it more and more. It’s a doddle to charge, a 3 pin plug pops out of a flap in the front and with a good extension lead you can plug it into any 13amp mains plug and it does seem to charge, from flat, in 3 and a half hours. As mentioned, the weekend was bitterly cold, but as long as you wrap up

G

and put on your hat and gloves its fairly comfortable behind the windscreen and way warmer than my bike. I found myself hopping into it to pop down the road for a pint of milk in exactly the same casual way I use the bike. It doesn’t feel that great on the A roads. Although it can do 50mph, it feels a bit overworked at that speed and starts eating its battery very fast. However on a country lane on a sunny day I imagine it would be a real blast. It will take a passenger in comfortable enough style for short journeys although the back seat is twice as cold as the front seat and its a bit ungainly crawling

into the rear. In my opinion it has 2 major faults. The first is the lack of space for shopping and carrying bits and bobs. This is a really big minus because as a shopping car/ local runaround you’re bound to wanting to load it up. The second is the price. The £7,000 asking price is only what you would expect from Renault but the additional £45 a month for battery hire is what sticks in the throat. Suddenly the saving on fuel bills doesn’t look so attrac-tive. However if there was one around as part of a carshare scheme or for community hire I and a lot of the people I showed it to would use it all the time. As for its bizarre looks – I say hats off to Renault for having the gumption to put it into production. Now which other car maker can shake themselves free from the fat, heavy, 100mph, 4 seater cul-de-sac we’re all stuck in and give us a really usefull (cheap) electric runabout.

hugh’s bit

Hey Hey You You Get Offa My Cloud S this a Magritte I see before me? Or is it actually

Votre-gritte? Looking out of my

window today I see a perfect cotton-woolly cloud, floating in the cerulean bullshit above the Teme valley. It’s like the one in the picture – without the glass, and it reminds me immediately of the cloud-cliché that Magritte often used. I also wondered out loud if it was Wordsworth’s unique-ly lonely cloud. However I’d prefer not to think about my cloud that way. I’d rather look at the cloud in front of me as it is, wordlessly, and find my own ways of seeing it without tripping over the cultural references. Someone, somewhere is always selling you something. Why am I thinking about clouds anyway? Because I want to know why the nebulous place where we are invited to store all our digital identities is called “The Cloud”. Just as a cloud blots out the sun, or clouds your judgement, this soft and fluffy metaphor hides the fact that your personal information is not floating free some-place over the rainbow, or off in quantum cyber-space, but is being stored in some giga-corporation’s mega-servers bolted to the floors of anoxic warehouses in grim industrial estates in a far away totalitarian country, open to the view of governments and corporations, but not securely in your own hard driven memory i.e. the one in your head. Hello Clouds, hello Sky, Facebook, Google and the CIA*. *(Goodbye Fotherington Thomas, now a very successful banker.) The Cloud image is a fluffy illusion adopted for the usual reasons by the big companies. Here is a picture for dummies. The Cloud of Unknowing. Like many power point doodles it doesn’t actually explain anything, but please note that the people have

no faces, no individuality, while the cloud has eyes and a smile, and is wearing a crown, denoting its sovereign power “in loco Dei” (“in the place of God” for those of you who were lucky enough to go to a state school, avoiding the Govean curse of a classical education). Its in charge; it knows it. The Cloud is a conveniently obscuring metaphor for another oligarchic rip-off. Why are you giving your personal information over to the true sociopaths of this world, the T.Rexs of our pagan jungle economy - Google, Amazon, iShit, Facebook and News Corp? Selfishness is built into their algorithms – clause 1 of their framework docs states that the interests of shareholders outrank the interests of customers. Technically, legally, despite Starbuck’s crocodile tears, they are as constitutionally incapable of delivering a sincere apology as a Komodo Dragon, because a conscience has never been transplanted into their corporate bodies, nor written into their legal DNA. Its not something they have need of. I’d rather hand my details over direct to the Police, our own British not-for-profit organisation which is held to account by democratic and legal means. In theory. But they’ve got them already. But actually I keep my self in my own memory in my own head – whose capacity is 500 Tb (a/c Wikipedia) and rather dwarfs my allotted space in The Cloud. The swarf, the offcuts I might keep in those distant vaults full of chat-tering servers, but old files of memorabilia won’t help me find my soul when dementia comes on. What’s left when I disintegrate or my subscription fails, whichever-is-the-sooner, will be as meaningless as my body when the organising principle, the soul that animates it, has departed. Lest we all become versions of Rimmer from Red Dwarf, a holographic life-form, a hi-tech ghost, its better to be wiped from the cyber-vault as if we had never been. Digital media is infinitely fragile, a few power cuts here or there, a magnetic storm from Heaven; all that will be left will be a few plaintive scraps of riddling code. If you want to be remembered a headstone is more reliable; it will give you a couple of hundred years in a country churchyard, before your epitaph flakes away, whilst paper lasts for centuries; for those really concerned to preserve their data then parch-ment lasts for millennia. For true aeon-proof permanence you should inscribe your essential imagery on sheets of porcelain. The information will of course outlast the language its written in, and it will become a riddle. I quite like the idea of surviving as a riddle. No better than what I am now ....P.S. Factoid of the week: ref: Magritte: the French for countryside is “campagne”, for fields “champs”: the coupé champagne glass design as featured above was originally modelled on the shape of Marie Antoinette’s left breast.

ARGOI n h i s f i r s t fea tu re s ince directing/starring in the Oscar- nominated crime caper, THE TOWN, Ben Affleck does ditto with a very different drama, this time factually based. Following the Revolutionary Guards’ 1979 attack on Tehran’s US embassy, Affleck plays Tony Mendez, a CIA ‘ex-filtration’ specialist charged with rescuing six of his coun-trymen holed up in the Canadian embassy. Despite the immense danger, Mendez and his pal John Chambers (John Goodman) develop an audacious plan involving the production of a bogus sci-fi movie in the Iranian desert. After much dissent back in Washington, Mendez eventually sneaks the hostages out the embassy’s back-door and passes them off as film crew. With a stellar cast including Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin and Adrienne Barbeau, ARGO is both a fine psychological drama and gripping action thriller.

JACK REACHER Best known as a screenwriter, in particular for THE USUAL SUSPECTS, Christopher McQuar-rie’s second directorial outing is an equally dark, complex tale of mistaken identity based on a Lee Child crime novel. In an unnamed city, the police think that they’ve caught the ex-army sniper who shot five people but he demands that they bring in his old colleague, the morally irreproachable drifter, Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise), to prove his innocence. With their defence lawyer Helen Rodin (Rosamund Pike) pitted against her D.A. father (Richard Jenkins) and a sub-plot involving a vicious Russian gang run by the enigmatic ‘Zec’ (celebrated director Werner Herzog in a rare outing in front of the camera), this is a tense, intriguing movie with Cruise giving his most nuanced performance since 2004’s COLLATERAL. HOLY MOTORSFilm Soc. Corner loves to bang drums for the weird, wonderful and woefully underrated, so please welcome the first feature in 13 years by whacky French auteur, Leos Carax. Entertain-ingly melding reality, fantasy, and voyeurism, Oscar, played by veteran French actor/clown, Denis Lavant, is driven around Paris by the ice-cool Celine (the venerable Edith Scob) in her stretch limo from which he emerges in various wildly different roles – manic jazz accordionist, assassin, graveyard abductor and more. Oscar’s true persona is tantalisingly ambiguous, less so Lavant’s mesmerising performance, Carax’s playful references to his celluloid peers (Scob reprising her role in Franju’s EYES WITHOUT A FACE), and impressively against-type turns from Kylie Minogue and Eva Mendes. If you like David Lynch, Bunuel or David Fincher’s THE GAME, you’ll adore HOLY MOTORS. Unmissable!

Casa Naranjo, ShrewsburyMMr Pernickety and his Lovely Companion (who is

due, Mr P can proudly announce, to become Mrs P around the Summer Solstice) had decided to motor

up to Shrewsbury to seek entertainment in the Palace of Bad Taste better known as Cineworld. The film they were to see didn’t start for an hour and a bit – just giving them time to drive into the town and assess the qualities of a tapas bar which Mr P had heard about but not yet visited. Tapas, they reasoned, could be ordered, delivered and swiftly eaten, well within the time available, while another review for the Woolly Organ could be knocked on the nog-gin. Readers will know that the last time Mr P reviewed a tapas bar – Tomatitos in Hay – he was almost embar-rassingly excited about his experience. A whiff of fried gar-lic and the guttural strum of a Flamenco guitar had been more than enough to ginger up a good swerving of tangy nostalgia sauce. He felt the same as soon as he and the LC had entered the door in a slender alleyway beside the Lion Hotel in Wyle Cop and made their way up a flight of narrow stairs to the beamed, barn-like space which is Casa Naranjo. The place was packed, and reverberating with happy con-versation and the music of Andalucia, made heady with the aroma of Gambas sizzling in ajillo, while from behind the bar they were greeted by a charming, thoroughly au-thentic Spaniard. There were, the Spaniard apologised, no more tables available, but Mr P and his LC were welcome to eat at the bar, perched on high stools. This suited them well – they didn’t have much time, they were going to eat only tapas, and that was the right way to do it. Invited to order an aperitif, Mr P requested a glass of chilled fino. Alas, they were all out of fino and only had some sweet stuff that the barman said he couldn’t recommend. A point for honesty, Mr P mentally awarded, and minus a point for running out of Tio Pepe. However, the Vina Palaciega Crianza Rioja was a fine substitute – like Lisa Riley with a cigar, smoky and full-bodied – even at £4.95 a 175 ml slug. Mr P and the LC quickly identified and ordered seven dishes from a good selection of tapas on the carta. They were disappointed that these were not already sizzling in hot trays behind the bar, as they would have been in a busy tapas joint in Spain, where the fellas plonk them down in front of you as soon as you’ve ordered. In this case, they would arrive from the kitchen, as ready, and sporadically, as it turned out. First to come was a basket of white bread, some good fat green olives and a pot of aioli, delicious and as more-ish as Othello, although the LC declined the bread on the grounds that it was too ordinary and, unlike Othello, too white. Mr P was too hungry to care. Next to arrive, about fifteen minutes later, were prawns in garlic – always a treat – along with a dish of Patatas Bravas, which were con-sumed appreciatively by Mr and the future Mrs P, who, with the arrival of another glass of the excellent Rioja, was looking lovelier than ever, but also showing signs of concern that they might miss that all-important clip telling punters to turn off their phones before the main feature kicked off at the cinema. After a longish gap and a few apologies from the bar-man, Mr P, despite the animation lent by the food, the wine

and the ambience, was also beginning to wonder if they would be finished in time. The barman, aware of this time-shortage, offered to cancel the remaining dishes, but Mr P was keen to have the albondigas – meat balls in a pi-quant sauce which he had enjoyed so much at Tomatitos. They arrived in the nick of time, along with Garbanzos epi-nacas, (chick peas and spinach). Mr P thought the meat-balls delicious but not quite as tasty as those made by the (non-Spanish) chef in Hay. The LC disagreed; these albondigas, she said, were more authentic and viscerally Spanish. She was probably right; she usually is when it comes to questions of authenticity – and visceralness, for that matter. They were right up to the wire and about to depart when the Pollo al Ajillo turned up. Mr P couldn’t pass on that, hurriedly stuffed a chunk of succulent, garlicky chicken into his mouth and chewed for a few delighted moments before leaping up to get the ancient Volvo, and save a soaking for the LC, while she paid the bill: £39.70 (+tip) for six tapas and three glasses of good wine. Mr P wished they’d had more time and the chance to eat their final missing tapa (for which they weren’t charged), but he and the LC drove happily away from an exuberant, taste-filled interlude. They look forward to returning soon for paella para dos (24 hours notice required) and a good two hours in which to eat it. ‘VE lived in Presteigne for some time now but I originally grew up in a small village on the Somerset levels, about 8 miles from Glastonbury. Every now

and then, me and my friends have a get together. This Christmas, even as the Met Office issued more flood warnings, we trundled and splashed from outposts as far away as London and Presteigne, to a small house in Glastonbury. In ancient times, Somerset was known as the land of the summer people and that’s because the Somerset “levels,” which lie roughly at sea level, used to be waterlogged all winter and only accessible in the summer. So in winter, locals had to row boats or build raised tracks to get from one lake village or island to the next and the most famous of all was the Isle of Glass … better known today as Glastonbury. The levels were first drained by the Romans. The crisscross lattice of drainage rhines dried up new swathes of land, making them available for peat extraction and for farming. The land was fertile and Somerset prospered. I spent my childhood on the Somerset levels. We rode bikes, then ponies … dated peat diggers, then weird arty types … lerned to spell, climbed trees, wrote love letters, dabbled in vegetarianism. A red brick house on the lower slopes of Glastonbury is still home to a couple of my pals. There is a shrine to their cat, who was called Octimocti, an editing studio (Stephen makes films for a living) and an outdoor shower made from a blue bucket with holes drilled in it. Next door there’s a lock up stuffed full of firewood and bicycles. On our first foray with the bicycles, we cycled to the exceedingly small City of Wells and back. Somerset is much less hilly than the Marches and the landscape is starkly different. Even the mud smells different. We took the back route, which was flooded, but by cycling quite fast and sticking your feet up as you go through the water, you can stay quite dry. It’s important not to get too carried away, however, especially if you have stashed Christmas shopping in the panniers and then forgotten about it. Sue’s dad, Mike, used to fix milking parlours on the levels. The grazing there was extensive and dairy cows loved the lush grass. It wasn’t always practical to bring the cows all the way back to the farm for milking so the “Somerset” parlours were designed to move with the cows from field to field. Its just one example of how people and appropriate technology can work with nature, and in ways that the landscape suggests. Anyone who doesn’t “believe” in climate change has some explaining to do this year. In the last twelve months Arctic Ice melt reached new records, New York was subsumed by a hurricane and closer to home, roads became streams, streams became rivers, homes became inundated and likewise cycle paths. The cycle path between Godney and Shapwick Heath,

to the west of Glastonbury, takes you past the old peat works and lakes which have formed where the peat was dug out, to a nature reserve. The track was only a bit flooded to begin with, but beyond a thicket of trees, the water suddenly grew quite deep and I found myself pedaling underwater. There was a swan diving for fish just to my left and I wasn’t sure where the sides of the cycle track ended or the lake began. “Don’t stop” advised Stephen, “you’ll get wet” So I just kept pedaling and I did get wet. And as we continued, I saw on the lakes and in the gathering dusk, swans and geese and cormorants and weird kinds of ducks, Shovelers and tufted things and flocks of this and that. We finally emerged from the floods near Shapwick Heath and stopped to empty out our trainers and wring out socks and pretty much all of our clothes actually, when something else happened. It was starting to get dark and at first I thought a tree had exploded. But the explosion was starlings, thousands of them. Yes thousands. Possibly millions actually. They took off together and were joined by other flocks and there followed the most skilled display of synchronized flying you could wish to see … a perfect dance across the sky … it was wonderful. The starlings finally came to roost and the night sky settled. Out on the levels nature is king and we were, for a moment, a part of it and stunned to silence.
