Traditional programs at Laurier Brantford

Strong rEPutation

in the 2009 Maclean’s reputational survey, Laurier ranked in the top three in our category nationally for Best overall, Highest Quality,

Most innovative and overall reputation.

To complement our unique and innovative programming,

Laurier Brantford offers programs in the traditional disciplines of English, History and Psychology. Students can complete an Honours degree in English or Psychology, or a combination Honours degree in History. The opportunity to combine these more traditional disciplines with interdisciplinary programs like Contemporary Studies, Criminology, Health Studies, Human Rights & Human Diversity, Journalism, Law and Society or Leadership. The ability to study traditional programs as part of an interdisciplinary program allows students the flexibility to explore multiple interests, and acquire a range of knowledge and skills that are unique to different programs. Students will complete core courses in Contemporary Studies, or choose to complete it in combination with a traditional discipline to further emphasize skill development and a interdisciplinary approach to education. Some combinations require careful course selection to complete in four years, and students interested in doing an honours

combination program should speak to the Recruitment Office or an academic advisor.

EnglishStudying English means more than words and phrases. It is a chance to explore interesting ideas, discover another culture, and develop communi-cation and comprehension skills, all of which can take you around the world. English is about the stories that have made an impact on the world we live in, our everyday lives, and the way we approach them.

The contemporary topics within Laurier Brantford’s English program, such as popular culture, mass media and film studies, give students a fresh and interesting learning experience, while still providing a background in more traditional areas, including literature, drama, language and poetry. Students will develop critical thinking skills, effective writing and editing skills, and strong analytical and comprehension skills. Discussion and debate are at the heart of any English class, and the small class sizes at Laurier Brantford promote interaction between professor and student. This unique approach creates a much more comfortable environment, where students are free to share their ideas. Students will find English to be a strong complement to contemporary

studies or journalism for a career in writing and communications, and the Children’s Education & Development or Youth and Children’s Studies Option for a career in teaching.

About the English programThe honours program in English consists of 20 credits of which a minimum of 10 are in English. Students will complete one credit from Reading Fiction, Reading Poetry, Reading Drama and Survey of Major British Authors, plus nine credits at the senior level. Requirements for Contemporary Studies are also completed.

HistoryHistory has been defined as “the rational study of the significant past,” and it is with this approach that Laurier Brantford approaches the combination honours program. By introducing students to the people, places, events and ideas that have shaped our world today, they are able to contextualize how our society has reached the point it is at, and more importantly, how we can learn from our previous successes and failures as a culture.

History courses develop students’ analytical and communication skills, and promotes knowledge and under-standing of institutions, ideas, groups and individuals who have shaped our political, social and cultural world. It also contributes to reflective, articulate citizenship.

Areas of study in our History program at Laurier Brantford include Canada, modern and contemporary Europe focusing on Britain and Germany, and international relations.

A degree in history can provide a strongknowledge base for a future career in journalism, teaching and law, and provides a deeper understanding of the past, and the impact it has had on the present.

Your future starts here

Dr. Kris Gerhardt’s interest in psychology developed out of one of his other passions: music.

“I wanted to discover why I loved music so much,” he says. “Why did I love certain songs while some of my friends didn’t? How can you explain different musical

tastes, the way different songs make you feel and how your brain represents those tastes and feelings?”

It is psychology’s wide range of topics that Gerhardt finds so interesting.

“There is so much to do and so many areas that psychology touches,” he says. “There really is something for everyone. If you can’t find something interesting in psychology,

look again.”

The interdisciplinary nature of the Brantford campus promotes the interaction of professors and students, something Gerhardt says allows

students to “get out of the box,” preventing them from pigeonholing their future.

“You will not find another campus this small, with this many broad-ranging resources at your fingertips,” he says.

Gerhardt’s favourite part of being a professor is being able to interact with his students and discover what brought them into

his classroom, and of course, being able to share his passion for psychology. He says his job is “to teach you something in such a way that you want to think about it again after you’ve walked out my door.”

How can you explain different musical tastes, the way different songs make you feel and how

your brain represents those tastes and feelings?

PsychologyPsychology touches almost every aspect of our lives, and studies every aspect of human behaviour and mental processes. From an individual’s personality traits to group dynamics, and the development of a child’s thought process to the teenage mind, psychology concerns itself with these ideas and works to help us better understand the society in which we live.

Laurier Brantford offers an Honours BA in Psychology (comprehensive), which is designed to provide students with a strong, liberal arts education, including exposure to major subfields of psychology such as learning, perception, cognition, and abnormal and community psychology. Courses are designed to develop skills in areas such as research methodology, data analysis and statistics.

Field placements play an important role in the learning process in

psychology. By providing students with an opportunity to employ the theories and concepts learned in the classroom in a community-based setting, students are able to see real-world results of psychological concepts.
