Meet the Team!

Meet your Practitioners at Bracken Ridge Natural Therapies

Bryan Smith—Behavioural Optometrist

Bryan Smith, provides both traditional Optometrist consultations and

Developmental and Behavioural Optometry consultations. Bryan has a special

interest in Children’s Vision, Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation and Sports Vision.

Bryan assesses the “whole” visual system to achieve better vision and sensory

integration.

The Two Visual Systems - Central and Peripheral Vision

Neuroscientific literature has identified that the visual system has two visual

pathways referred to as central and peripheral (also referred to as Focal/

Parvocellular and Ambient/Magnocellular Pathway). The central vision is

concerned with form and colour. The peripheral vision is concerned with

movement and depth perception and is generally considered to be crucially

involved in motion processing.

Assessing the “whole” visual system

Normally, an optometrist measures eye aiming and focusing, which are controlled by the central and

autonomic nervous systems respectively, while working in front of a Phoropter filled with lenses.

Peripheral vision function is not taken into consideration.

Brian works with integrating the whole visual system enabling him to help people with eye turns,

motion sickness/vertigo, Autistic spectrum disorders, tunnel vision/depth perception, anxiety & spatial

organization issues, attention deficit disorders & Learning difficulties.

Bryan is available Tuesdays 9am to 5:30pm

A Comparison between Central and Peripheral Vision

Central vision Peripheral vision

"What is it" (object recognition) function "Where Am I / Where is it" function

Involves only central vision Involves entire visual field

Largely conscious Largely sub-conscious

Works in isolation Integrates with other sensory systems

Enables object identification and perception of

shape and colour

Enables visually guided movement such as pointing

along with posture, balance and movement

How’s your

Immune System?

With the cold weather now upon us, how are

you making sure that your body can fight off

all of those nasty bacteria and viruses just

waiting to take you over and leaving you in a

blithering, snotty heap on the couch

watching Judge Judy and re-runs of

MacGyver?

There are some very simple things you can do

to make sure your body is strong enough to

win the battle, who needs Judge Judy when

you can be living your own life vibrantly!

What is the Immune System?

The immune / lymphatic system consists of

tissues and cells that protect the body against

attack from foreign invaders. It is comprised

of:

White blood cells

The tonsils

The thymus gland

The liver and spleen

The lymphatic system

The bone marrow

The mucous membranes in the gut

and respiratory tract.

Exercise:

Yes, I know but it’s cold outside and it’s hard

to get motivated, BUT keeping moving as it is

critical to your immune function. Your lymphatic

system is one of your main lines of defence and

contains a fluid called lymph fluid and lymph nodes

which are the main processing area of the lymphatic

system (think about how your glands swell in your

neck under your chin when you aren’t feeling so

well!). The lymph fluid in your body contains white

bloods cells and transports bacteria from the cells

and organs of your body to lymph nodes where the

bacteria is destroyed. So the question is, how does

the lymph move through the body? MOVEMENT!

Lymph is moved through the body by the

contraction of muscle! So when it gets cold outside

KEEP MOVING so that you can keep those harmful

bacteria out of body!

Garlic:

Studies show that garlic

contains allicin, a

compound with a natural

antibiotic-like effect. It is

antibacterial, antifungal,

antiparasitic, and antiviral, but it must be consumed

raw to have this effect.

Garlic is a true SUPERFOOD, it has also been shown

to reduce cholesterol and triglycerides, cancer,

heavy-metal intoxication, infectious diseases,

hypertension, free-radical damage, and immune

deficiency states (Abdullah et al, 1988).

Vitamin C:

Vitamin C is said to

increase the production

of white blood cells and

antibodies and helps your

body to absorb Iron.

Vitamin C is essential for healthy function of the

body, but we cannot store it, so we need to ensure

that we eat foods that contain Vitamin C in our diet

NOW is the time to make sure you’re

prepared for Winter!

every day! Some foods that contain Vitamin C are,

Red Capsicum, Strawberries, Oranges, Brussels

Sprouts, Broccoli, Grapefruit, Cantaloupe, Dark

Leafy Greens, Paw Paw, Cabbage and Tomatoes.

You can also supplement your diet with vitamin C

Supplements! We stock GNLD Vitasquares which

are especially for children!

Flavanoids:

Flavanoids work with Vitamin C to protect cells in

body fluids like the blood and lymph. Each

enhances the absorption and action of the other.

Flavanoids improve your immune function, as well

as reducing the risk of heart disease, anti-

inflammatory action and protects from free

radicals. Flavanoids are the main reason we hear

every now and then that told wine and chocolate

could actually be good for us!

Flavanoids are found in blue, purple and magenta

foods like onion, beetroot, lettuce, berries,

cabbage, kale, spinach, asparagus, kidney beans

and many more green vegetables and beans, Dill,

Thyme, Tea (Green & Black) and red wine.

Carotenoids:

Carotenoids are naturally occurring in all coloured

vegetables, and improve our immune function.

They have been linked to oxidation-preventing

mechanisms and are therefore efficient free-radical

scavengers.

Does this all sound a bit too confusing?

If you want to be as healthy and vibrant as

MacGyver make sure that you excerise regularly

and have a diet full of colourful fruit and vegtables!

It’s as simple as that!

If that all gets too

hard sometimes and

you start to feel a bit

run down, increase

your intake of Garlic

and Fruit and

Vegetables!

We’ve even given

you some fantastic

Juice recipes to try!

Winter Immunity

Juices!

Got a juicer that you never use? Well before you

reach for the supplements or the cold and flu

tablets dust of your juicer and get some raw living

nutrients into you!

Our bodies, like plants and other living organisms

on this earth, require sunshine to grow, develop,

repair and regenerate. Without natural sunlight

we are far more susceptible to cancer,

depression, obesity, osteoporosis and many

other diseases so I find the debates about how

the sun is dangerous and is killing us a little

ignorant and mis informed.

By allowing our skin and body to receive the light

from the sun, our skin creates a photo-electric

response so that our body can make Vitamin D.

This vitamin helps the entire bone structure of the

body, the circulatory system, maintains normal

heart rhythm and helps every cell in the body

regulate its function better. The UV rays that

create vitamin D in our body also help to control

bacterial and viral overwhelm.

The problem with most people today is that they

are mal-illuminated. We are indoors in our office

all day and by the time we walk out it is dark.

The media and western medicine tell us to coat

ourselves with sunscreen when we do go outside

(which contain toxic chemicals that put even

more stress on system) and for four weeks of the

year during our annual leave we take a holiday

and burn ourselves to a crisp.

So how can we get adequate sunshine and thus

the vitally important vitamin D?

People who have nutritional deficiencies

caused by consuming soft drinks,

processed foods, white flour and refined

sugars are more susceptible to sunburns so

clean up your diet.

Expose at least 70 -80% of your body to the

sun for 20 - 30 minutes every

day that you can (without using chemical

sun screen) Even better, grab a water

bottle, go for a walk and breath in some

fresh air.

Remember the hours before 11am and

after 2pm are usually less intense

heat and will ensure the best and

healthiest results in a 20 - 30 minute

period.

Don’t always wear sunglasses. The eyes

are the gateway to telling your body

when it is day and night. They also tell the

body to produce more melatonin which

helps protect the skin from burning. You

are more likely to get burnt wearing

sunglasses than not.

As with all the principles of health that have

been mentioned in the past months.

Everything in moderation! Get some sun daily,

put a hat on and cover up if you are going to

be out in the sun during the hotter parts of the

day. Drink lots of water. Eat fresh fruit and

veggies and be grateful for the day.

Cheers
