Boston Herald On Bids: 'Money Is The Public's'
Boston. The Boston Herald American
published an editorial on blind bids, in part as follows:
"Jack Valenti, front man for the film industry, might be correct in calling the current brawl between movie distributors and theatre owners in this state a 'war' and a 'vile, squalid quarrel about profits, about money.' But, he's dead wrong in claiming that the movie-going public has no interest in the issue, because the money he's talking about is theirs. For that reason, if no other, Massachusetts ought to decree an end to it, either by legislative action or a court injunction.
The Central Point "The squabble centers around
the trade practice of 'blind bidding.' That's a device under which theatre owners are forced to bid, sight unseen, for the right to show a film without first seeing it to decide whether it is a big hit or a bomb. Valenti defends it, on the ground that it compels exhibitors to share some of the financial risk of making a film. Theatre owners, both the large chains and the small independent exhibitors, oppose it because, they say, it drives up the price of pictures. How? Two ways, really. By jacking up the prices of a turkey' or promoting it relent
lessly to keep it running, in order to recoup as much of their bid as possible. In either case, though, the customer pays — and loses."
