The Freising Manuscripts are the earliest documentof Slovenian culture. They are the earliest preservedwritings in Slovenian as well as the earliest Slavictexts, written in the Latin alphabet.
The first and the third manuscript are penitentialforms, while the second is a sermon with aninvitation to repent. They were most likely writtenclosely before the year 1000. The manuscripts wereused in Upper Carinthia, where the Freising dioceseowned lands in the valley of the river Molna (Mll).
The language of the Freising Manuscripts is earlySlovenian. The contents of this edition are also
presented in a way that is suitable for general andpedagogic use.
The present edition offers a historical overview of themost important scholarly editions of the Freisingmanuscripts. It contains several diplomatic, criticaland phonetic transcriptions and translations of themanuscripts into Latin and five modern Europeanlanguages. This edition also contains a series of
studies and commentaries, a glossary of the wordsused in the manuscripts, a bibliography and otherappendices. The electronic edition is also enrichedwith a spoken reconstruction in early Slovenian, integrated with the transcription of the manuscripts

eg. in modern Slovenian.
Most of the transcriptions and materials in theeEdition are accessible in the typography built intomodern day computers. Special characters are usedonly in phonetic and diplomatic transcriptions and inthe glossary. To display these characters you need
either a Unicode-compliant font that supportsphonetic characters (eg. Doulos SIL orCardo) or thefont ZRCola (the required fonts 00 ZRCola and 01CERKola are directly available as an integral part ofthe present edition). The advantage of ZRCola is thefidelity with which it displays all the specialcharacters, although it uses non-standard Unicode(Private Use Area).
The Freising Manuscripts are therefore available intwo HTML versions, between which you can switchat the top of every page. ZRCola correctly displaysall special characters, whereas standard Unicode incertain cases displays only approximations.
You can browse the edition on the Web or you candownload it to your computer: first save the file anddecompress (unzip) it, then open index-en.html to viewthe edition off-line. processing; you find them in the foldertei.
