The symbol for pound is £. It is delivered from the first letter of the Latin word for pound-the librum.
After the ‘old money’ the basic unit of money in England became the pound of silver, which was equal to 240 sterlings. So this unit was and still is called the pound sterling.
The word lira that is used for the basic unit of money in Italy also means “pound.”
Coins which are called "coppers", such as the penny, have been made from steel since 1992. (The one and two pence pieces are made from copper-plated steel.)
In "old money" the symbol for a penny was "d". That’s because of the Roman coin called ‘denarius’. A few other coins had a ‘d’ symbol because of that coin. The ‘dupondius’ was another Roman coin worth 8 of a denarius.
