British Heritage Tour Tour of the UK • Ages 13-16

The British Heritage Tour visits many of the UK’s mainland attractions over the course of 14 nights, including visits to major cities such as London, York, Edinburgh and Manchester, as well as visits to the Lake District, Stratford-upon-Avon and Stonehenge. The two-week sightseeing tour is supplemented by 30 hours of English language tuition, through classroom teaching, culture lessons, group project work and interactive lectures.



Accommodation:

Throughout the two-week programme, students will stay in either single or twin bedrooms, as well as group dormitories (separated by gender). Bathrooms are shared unless specified:

• London (Daniel Defoe) – Single en-suite rooms in flats• York (York Racecourse) – Twin rooms with en-suite • Edinburgh (Heriot Watt) – Single rooms with en-suite• Lake District (YHA Ambleside) – 4 bed dorms with bathroom• Manchester (Britannia Hotel) – Twin rooms en-suite• Cotswolds (Royal Agricultural University) – Twin en-suite• London (Daniel Defoe) – Single en-suite rooms in flats

Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Students will be arriving throughout the day to Greenwich, south east London. In the evening, students will receive an induction to the course, as well as some icebreaker welcome games to meet everybody.

Day 2

Students will start the day by traveling from Greenwich to Westminster on a boat cruise. The afternoon is spent exploring the Tower of London.

Day 3

After making the journey to York by private coach in the morning, the afternoon will be spent visiting York Minster, the city walls and ‘The Shambles’ - a famous traditional English street dating back to the 14th century.

Day 5Students will learn more about the heritage and history through a guided tour of the city. In the afternoon, the group will visit Holyrood Park & Arthur’s Seat, providing breathtaking views of Edinburgh.

Day 4

On the way to Edinburgh, students will visit Alnwick Castle, the filming location of Hogwarts School from the Harry Potter films.

Day 6

Marking the beginning of their language and culture lessons, students will be divided into groups and have a full day of morning and afternoon lessons.

Day 7

English language classes take up the most of the day. In the evening, students take a much needed break and take part in an activity with other summer school students at Heriot-Watt University.

Day 8

After language classes in the morning, students will visit Edinburgh Castle and spend the evening at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival; the largest arts festival in the world.

Day 10After arriving to Ambleside in the Lake District, students will take a return trip by boat to the nearby rural town of Bowness. The group will travel to Manchester in the evening for the next part of the tour.

Day 9

A final morning of lessons will be followed by a coach journey to Ambleside. The evening will be spent learning more about Beatrix Potter; a famous author from the area.

Day 11

Students will visit the world-famous Etihad Stadium, home to Premier League Champions Manchester City. In the afternoon, students will visit the Science & Industry Museum followed by free time in the Trafford Centre.

Day 12

A journey into the heartland of England gives students the opportunity to visit Shakespeare’s Birthplace and the historic town of Stratford-upon-Avon.

Day 13

A visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Stonehenge followed by Windsor Castle makes for an enriching final day on the road. The evening will see students present their projects they have been preparing during the programme.

Day 15Bucksmore offers a complimentary airport transfer service for all flights departing between 10:00-20:00. A Bucksmore member of staff will help students to check-in to their flight before waving goodbye!

Day 14

On the final day, students will first go on the London Eye to see the city from above, before heading to Oxford Street for some free time and shopping. The tour finishes with a visit to a musical in a West End Theatre in the evening.



English Language SyllabusThe language study lessons focus on the communicative style of language learning and provide grammar and vocabulary tailored to a student’s ability.

Language for life lessons integrate a wider range of topics including learner training, literacy, culture and life skills.

Interactive LecturesInteractive lectures are carefully constructed to benefit and correspond to the students’ project for the week. Modelled on university style learning, interactive lectures provide content for discussion in groups as well as constant interaction across the classroom. The interactive lectures on the British Heritage Tour discuss the histories of York and Edinburgh, as well as take a look at poetry and authors that come from the Lake District.

Group Project WorkThroughout the duration of the programme, students in small groups will work together on a project identifying and researching cultural stereotypes in the United Kingdom. The aims of project work are to encourage collaboration and communication through the completion of real-world tasks that use English with an authentic purpose. Groups are provided with a project guideline which they should follow and aim to complete in the preparation sessions. The project culminates in a presentation evening in which groups display and present their work.
