AUGUST 2017 FOREST TRACE I 8 AUGUST 2017 www.facebook.com/PacificaSeniorLivingForestTrace Some people celebrate Senior Citizens Day on August 14th, marking the date that President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act in 1935. However, in 1988, President Ronald Reagan declared August 21st to be National Senior Citizens Day. His proclamation said, “For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older—places in which older people can participate to the fullest and can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity.” That message sounds like the perfect description of Pacifica Senior Living Forest Trace! August is here! How quickly each yearpasses, so let’s take advantage of this precioustime. Our theme this month is based on aquote from Robert Browning, a renowned19th century poet. He wrote, “A man’s reachshould exceed his grasp, for what’s a heavenfor?”

What does this mean for us at this timein our life? I have concluded it can beinterpreted with three meanings. First it

can suggest peace of mind; second, making every “magicmoment” count; and finally, application of practicalexercises. Peace of mind begins with acceptance of self, ourpersonality assets, our character liabilities. Then we canreach out to acceptance of others in the same realms. This brings us a truth to our reality and our calm toexternal anxieties, the true meaning of peace of mind.“Making every moment count,” I learned from my dearnon-conformist Aunt Fannie. Sometime I’d like to devotea whole column to her life. Her experience and exploitstook her from fame and riches to loss of all but herabdominal joy of life. She was the epitome of makingevery moment of her life meaningful by reaching, reaching, and then enjoying the results...only to reach even higher. Finally, we humans should always drive and dreamfor goals beyond that of which we have already obtained. For example, if we have walked to the Clubhouse andreturned by tram, let’s set our sights on walking bothways. If we are able to read two pages of any materialsbefore dozing, let’s try for the third or fourth page. Thereare so many ways to challenge ourselves and these arethe practical applications of “reaching beyond our grasp.” And now, in treasured memory of Pearl Klein, I’mhappy to share a poem she wrote, given to me by herhusband Charles, entitled “Gold Years Lament.”Another ache, another painAnother day to complainTeeth are gone, hair is greyVisions bad, what can I say?Love handles, got bunions tooFallen arches, what else is new?My hearing’s so so, it had better beMy spouse is deaf, it’s up to meEvery pang creates fearBut the ringing noises are only in my earGolden years are overratedI’d rather be twenty than be datedYou can have the early special and the discount, tooWithout teeth, how can I chew?So I close this lament with a pleaPlease God, have pity on me Thank you, Charles, for giving us this gem toremember her. Happy waning summer days. —Love, Suzy

Friday, August 11th • 11:00 a.m.We often think of American presidents as butts of jokes, the muses

for mockery and the subjects of satire. But every once in a while, ourcommanders-in-chief (or their speechwriters) come up with a few wittywisecracks of their own. Friday, August 11th is Presidential Joke Day—aholiday to commemorate the fact that presidents sometimes have a senseof humor. The holiday began in 1984, when Ronald Reagan made ajoke during a sound check for a radio broadcast. “My fellow Americans,”he said, “I’m pleased to tell you today that I’ve signed legislation thatwill outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.” Reaganwas not aware, however, that his feed was live. And unfortunately, noteveryone got the joke. Soviet officials got word of the broadcast and putthe military on high alert. Once the threat of nuclear war had abated,Americans found the situation hilarious, and decided to memorializeReagan’s famous quip by instituting National Presidential Joke Day. Toget you geared up to celebrate this holiday properly, we’re saluting thesepresidential knee-slappers at our Presidential Joke Club at 11:00 a.m.in the Card Room.

Pakistan and “Firearms in America”Wednesdays, August 2nd and 16th • 10:45 a.m.

Firearms are an undeniable component in both the story ofthe growth of the United States and of our culture today. JoinSterling University professor Phil Leto as he examines the political, legal and social forces which, for the past four decades, have madehandguns and automatic weapons the subject of fierce debate. The result: today, it is easier to purchase a firearm of any kind, procure a concealed weapon permit to carry it and justify the useof deadly force through “stand your ground”-like statutes. Jointhe discussion on the 2nd. As Britain partitioned its Indian empire in 1947, it createdPakistan as a state for hundreds of millions of Muslims living onthe subcontinent. Eventually, a “stable” Pakistan evolved; teeteringbetween democracy and military dictatorship and becoming anuclear power as it warily eyed its mortal enemy, India. Since the9/11 attacks this American “ally” has become a haven for terroristfugitives like Osama bin Laden while facing an adversary its ownSpecial Services forces helped create: the Taliban.
