Championship 1997

How it's markedThe Yorkshire Auto Trader BARC Harewood Hillclimb Championship is mari ed

within classes on a Bogey Time improvement basis. The Bogey Times for the 1997 season are shown at the top of each class in the programme. These Bogey Times are derived by adding 18 seconds to the record for each class standing at the start of the season and remain unchanged throughout the season.

Championship marl<s will be gained at the rate of 0.01 mark for each 0.01 of a second by which a driver beats the Bogey Time for his/her class. Any competitor who does not beat the Bogey Time will gain no marks for that meeting.

There is a maximum limit of 20 marks which can be gained at any meeting, and marks can only be gained In the three class runs. Marks gained in five out of six qualifying rounds will be counted for the Championship results. If any of the six meetings does not take place, the qualifying number of events will be reduced so that it is always one less than the total number of meetings which do take place.

In the event of a tie in the final marking, this will be decided in favour of the competitor who has gained the marks in the fewest number of qualifying rounds, including discarded rounds.

FTD AWARDS SERIESHow it's marked

At each meeting marks will be awarded to the championship competitors who have recorded the ten fastest times of the day in the class runs.

Marks will be awarded on the scale 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5,4, 3, 2 and 1 to the fastest competitor down to the tenth fastest competitor.

There will also be one bonus mark for any competltor(s) who breaks the course record standing at the commencement of the meeting.

Marks gained In five out of six qualifying rounds will be counted for the championship results.

In the event of a tie, the rules stated above also apply.

CLASSES 1 TO 5Our five new classes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 will not be Included in the marking for the

main 1997 Yorkshire Auto Trader BARC Harewood Hillclimb Championship, this Is because of the unavailability of class records on which to base the Bogey Times. These five classes will, however, compete for an additional souvenir award during the 1997 season.

Championship 1997

Doctor Of Metallurgy Keith Wllford from Sheffield will have to steel himself, the Lotus Europa driver Is sure to come under extreme pressure from the Immaculate BMW of 1996 Champion Dennis Crompton as they battle for the lead of the Yorkshire Auto Trader BARC Harewood Hlllcllmb Championship. Top points scorer at the May event the BMW motor trader will have to look over his shoulder for local government officer Peter Herbert's Westfield Is hot on the BMW's heels. Although he has fitted a more powerful engine, Peter has yet to attain the times he set with his push rod In 1996, consequently he Is slipping gradually behind the leaders.

A magnificent effort at the rain soaked May meeting earned Peter Griffiths, In the Chevron B47 his present fourth championship position. Unfortunately his car is damaged and he isnt present today so he will drop out of the top ten

In fifth place Peter Hamilton's Caterham has single seater drivers snapping at his exhaust pipe. Peters fifth place will be challenged by Nick Reeve's extremely rapid Megapln.

The next three places are exclusively Formula Ford. Andrew Henson has shown a fine turn of speed In only his second season at Harewood. David Sturdy and Tony Metcalf are not present today, consequently they will relinquish theirtop ten positions. Fast (Cleveland) farmer Dave Kitching's JedI rounds off the Top Ten. 1.78 points separating the battling 5th to 10th place men.

As long as they score similar points to those achieved at previous meetings, Bobby Fryers in his Clio Williams and young hot shoe Matthew PInder In his MG Metro look certain to enter the top ten.

To add spice to the proceedings, any one of half a dozen other drivers could secure a top ten place as their points scores are so close.
