Health, Beauty & Wellbeing

Down's SyndromeNHS Choices website provides the following information about Down syndrome or trisomy 21. It is a genetic condition that typically causes some level of learning disability and certain physical characteristics. Although children with Down's syndrome share some common physical characteristics, they don't all look the same. A child with Down's will look more like their family members than other children who have the syndrome. People with Down's syndrome will also have different personalities and abilities. Everyone born with Down's syndrome will have some degree of learning disability, but this will be different for each person.

Causes of Down's syndromeDown's syndrome is usually caused by an extra chromosome in a baby's cells. In most cases, this isn't inherited – it's simply the result of a one-off genetic change in the sperm or egg. There's a small chance of having a child with Down's syndrome with any pregnancy, but the likelihood increases with the age of the mother. For example, a woman who is 20 has about a 1 in 1,500 chance of having a baby with Down's, while a woman who is 40 has a 1 in 100 chance. There's no evidence that anything done before or during pregnancy increases or decreases the chance of having a child with Down's syndrome.

Health problems linked to Down's syndrome People with Down's syndrome are more likely to have certain health problems, including:

heart disorders, such as congenital heart disease

 hearing and vision problems

thyroid problems, such as an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism)

 recurrent infections, such as pneumonia

Your child may be checked by a paediatrician more often than other children to pick up problems as early as possible.

Living with Down's syndromeAlthough there's no "cure" for Down's syndrome, there's support available to help children with the condition lead healthy, fulfilling lives. This includes:

access to good healthcare – including a range of different specialists

support for your child's development – this may include speech and language therapy, physiotherapy, and home teaching

support groups – such as the Down's Syndrome Association, who can put you in touch with other families who have a child with Down's syndrome

Lots of people with Down's syndrome are able to leave home, have relationships, work, and lead largely independent lives.

If you'd like more information about Down's syndrome, you can visit the Down's Syndrome Association or call their helpline on 0333 121 2300.

Test Valley Chinese Medicine CentreDR YAN CLINIC

Contracture of Palmar Fascia Having been successfully helped with arthritis in my knees by Dr Yan, I had no hesitation to ask her to help with my painful hand and stiff fingers. Holding the steering wheel to drive was becoming difficult due to the pain caused by the pressure of the wheel on the palm of my hand. I was unable to undertake tasks at home such as rolling out pastry. In addition at night I would be woken with pins and needles in my hand. Dr Yan treated me with acupuncture and massage. After 3 or 4 sessions my hand was feeling much better, driving was easier and I was able to bring some of my baking for her to sample. The pins and needles have completely disappeared following continuing treatment, driving is not painful at all and I no longer wake up to stiff fingers in the morning.

Now for something completely different…‘Offered for sale’In a change to some of our recent articles we explore some common legal myths in our new occasional series on general principles of law.You are shopping in your local supermarket. Baked beans are on ‘special offer’. They are priced at 15p per can. You are surprised because usually they are 55p. You place a large number in your shopping trolley. Then at the check-out you are told that the price is 35p. A mistake has been made by the shop assistant who labelled them. The word ‘offer’ suggests the seller must sell the item at the advertised price, but that is not the case because advertisements and displays are usually what are called ‘invitations to treat’. An invitation to treat invites the buyer to make an offer and the seller can refuse that offer even though it is to pay the advertised price. This is why if a shopkeeper who mislabels an item, or does not have any items in stock other than the one in the shop window, can legally refuse to sell the item.A common example is where a Sale has ended but the price label has not been changed. You take the item to the checkout and are told that you must pay the usual price. You complain and may succeed in obtaining the item at the Sale price; however, the shop is not legally required to sell it to you at that price. In the case of Timothy v Simpson [1834] the claimant’s barrister claimed that “If a man advertises goods at a certain price, I have the right to go into his shop and demand the article at the price marked”, but the judge replied “No, if you do, he has the right to turn you out.”

However, there were no self-service shops at that time and so when Boots first adapted one of their shops to self-service in the 1950’s, the court had to decide where the contract took place. This was important because the Pharmacy and Poisons Act 1933 made it unlawful to sell certain items unless the sale was effected by or under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. In Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain v Boots Cash Chemists (Southern) Limited [1953] the court decided that taking the item from the shelf and placing it in the customer’s basket did not form a contract. The contract was entered into at the cash desk where the pharmacist was in attendance and able to observe the transaction. So you can change your mind and return an item to the shelf. But be sure not to delay doing so with perishables. Sometimes we see discarded frozen or refrigerated items which, because they have not been returned to the freezer or refrigerator, can no longer be sold. Bells are a specialist Wills, probate and conveyancing practice. The office opens five days a week Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm and home and hospital appointments can be arranged where appropriate.

Community News

Chandler’s Ford 023 80270606

The Countess Mountbatten Hospice in Southampton has received £2,000 from a lodge of Freemasons.

Karl Kurn from Homelea Lodge that meets in Botley presented a cheque to Eliza Dunn, the charity’s community and events fundraiser.

They money was raised at a Christmas Carol event and the lodge’s ladies’ night.

The hospice provides end of life care, symptom control and respite care. It requires £1m a year to operate and donations are vital.

Anyone with an end-of-life condition is able to receive care at the hospice, which is staffed by specialists.

These include consultants in palliative medicine and doctors with other specialist skills, along with clinical nurse specialists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, social workers and a

“It means we will be able to continue to provide vital services and it’s great to have this support from the community.”

Before we start to ‘diet’ we need to have established a healthy metabolism. We do this through a regular eating pattern which triggers the body’s response to the idea that a famine is over. Restricting our food intake and then eating more means our body is continuously in famine or feast. So after a while we find we are eating less and less in order to lose the same amount of weight. We then crave food and so get into a pattern of over eating and then restricting.

So what underpins our need to eat more than our body needs? Why do some of us reach for food when we are down? Over the years how has this coping strategy become a habit? Are we setting ourselves up for failure each time we embark on a diet without understanding what drove us to eat more and gain weight in the first place? What are our emotional triggers and can we start learning to manage our

emotions in a different way rather than resorting to over eating? Can we move to a place where we learn to maintain a healthy weight whilst we manage our emotional triggers through understanding and attending to these without the help of food?

If you would like to develop a healthier relationship with food whilst understanding and managing emotional triggers call  01794 329278 to talk over what you may be struggling with and to book an initial appointment with Maryanne Steele – experienced therapist.

Singing simple songs that tackle big issues. Songs that will make you laugh, but also make you think with no holds barred honest lyrics and quick wit.

Road and turning left to shortly pass the former Kings Arms pub and then after a while, also an equestrian centre, School Farm, which created a 300 metre long path inside the left hedge to give horses a safe trip beside the main road and allows pedestrians sanctuary from the road at the same time.Returning to Lockerley Road we now have a section of another 800 metres to cover before drawing up beside the entrance to Mount Farm, on the left (photo 4), which commences the farm trail segment of the walk. From the main road we climb up the tarmac road towards the farm, passing some business units on the right before arriving at a sharp right turn, that leads into the farm itself. At this point we need to aim straight ahead, crossing a stile with a distinctive path arrow taking us across the next field, along the slope, and downhill to another stile and footpath arrow.Once over this stile the path takes us directly through the cultivated field, but

the farmer has deliberately left a passage down the centre to enable unrestricted pathway down to the edge of this field.

At the bottom we are looking for a distinctive pair of footpath signs that are hidden within the undergrowth (photo 5) that take us over a wooden footbridge and into the adjacent field where we turn sharp left and aim into the left corner where a tiny bridge and large wooden gate take us out of the farmland and into the front garden of a Dunbridge home.

In less than 50 metres we meet a gate that brings us out on Dunbridge Road, and turn right along the road, sadly with no footpath, for around 500 metres, until drawing up in front of the Mill Arms once again.

The rest and recuperation can once again be well earned at the Mill Arms as the transport is retrieved from the rear car park.

This month’s chosen walk takes us into the heart of the Test Valley with the selected start

point from the Mill Arms, Barley Mill, Dunbridge, SO51 0LF (photo 1), which is about 4 miles out of Romsey. This location has a long history behind it, including the visit more recently of United States Presidents, Jimmy Carter and George Bush Senior, when they enjoyed a day’s fishing along the River Test as part of their official tour of Great Britain.

The walk covers just around 4 miles (6 km) and divides almost equally into three segments; including water meadows, local roads and farm trails. There is ample parking at the rear of the Mill Arms and a warm welcome awaits the walker after their 75–80 minute jaunt.

Leaving the car behind we walk directly across the road, over the level crossing, with this road aiming towards Mottisfont. In just 100 metres we turn left following the gravel track that takes us close to and beside the railway line and before too

long through two consecutive gates that take us across the Romsey to Salisbury line. This is electrified and trains can travel fairly swiftly so cross with extreme care.

Once over to the far gate the path leads us along the right hand edge with the fields running down to the river on the left. This path eventually takes us up to an attractive thatched cottage (photo 2) and then weaves a trail through the undergrowth which leads over a stile and then open marshland where wild flowers abound. This can be sometimes fairly boggy, hence why there are wooden bridges to carry the walker across the worst parts and give accurate direction across the long grass.

Finally we emerge through a gate in the left hand corner and cross a footbridge over the River Dunn on the left again (photo 3), but once on the road we turn immediately right aiming towards Butts Green.

Proceeding past The Green we keep to the left side of this for some 200 metres before joining Lockerley
