After two sold-out London shows, Ricky Gervais announces a special one-off Bristol date for David Brent & Foregone Conclusion Live, this December.Tickets to the event sold out in under five minutes, with a massive 18,000 ticket requests in the first minute reportedly crashing the Colston Hall website. If you didn’t get a ticket this time, don’t be too disheartened. Gervais has described these gigs as a warm up event and has hinted at a possible arena tour, posting on his twitter page:

‘18 thousand ticket requests in the first minute of on sale. That’s f*cking ridiculous. Oh well, O2 next then :) #Brentsback’

Over a decade since this first episode of cringe-comedy The Office hit our screens, Gervais revived Brent for this year’s Comic Relief, filming a music video for his reggae- inspired song ‘Equality Street’, which he recorded with rapper and comedian Doc Brown. The next Brent instalment was the launch of his Learn Guitar With David Brent series on YouTube, in which Brent plays the ‘old classics’ from the TV series, along with some new material. Brent also talks about reforming ‘the old band’ (Foregone Conclusion) in the YouTube series, which has racked up more than 21 million views. And so the live tour was born...

David Brent & Foregone Conclusion Live: A Work In ProgressRicky Gervais brings his David Brent tour to Bristol’s Colston Hall

Page 7: Bristol LIstings Collective - December 2013

Both London performances have received rave reviews including four stars from The Times, The Independent and The Guardian. Brent was singled out for individual praise including calling his return ‘more of a rock star but funny as ever’, The Independent calling Brent “Slough’s answer to a Jon Bon Jovi tribute act” and The Times ‘...a powerful front man’.Those who were lucky enough to get tickets to the Bristol performance will get to enjoy songs, performed live, from Brent’s back catalogue including ‘Free Love Freeway’, ‘Spaceman Came Down’, ‘Slough’, ‘Life on The Road’ and ‘Ain’t No Trouble’.

Ricky Gervais as David Brent with his band Foregone Conclusion will play Colston Hall on the 16th December.

Front man and lead singer Dan Gillespie-Sells and bassist Richard Jones joined us on the sofa for a chat before their recent gig at the O2 Academy.

Despite their success, the pair are incredibly down to earth. At one point Richard stops to show us some funny photos on his phone and it’s clear that the two are good friends.

Richard is married to pop singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor, who regularly collaborates with the band, and recently appeared on stage with them in London for the Boy Cried Wolf tour.

Their debut album Twelve Stops and Home charted at #2 in the UK albums chart and topped the UK iTunes and Amazon charts. Hits include: ‘Never be Lonely’, ‘Fill My Little World’, ‘Love It When You Call’ and ‘Sewn’.

Their next album Join With Us peaked at #1 in the UK albums chart and now their new album Boy Cried Wolf, released October 2103, has been called “the album of their career” (Q Magazine).

Boy Cried Wolf has been described as the band’s heartache album and the tells the story of a painful break up, with tracks like ‘Anchor’ and ‘You’ll See’ tugging at heartstrings where the hurt is audible in Dan’s vocals.

Q Magazine called Boy Cried Wolf the “album of your career”. Would you agree?Dan: Yes, to an extent. I think this album and the first album.Richard: It’s more of an ‘album’ from start to finish-Dan: Yes, all of the songs have a reason for being there.

Interview by Rachel Morris Photography: Kate Southall

The FeelingWe caught up with BRIT award nominated band The Feeling to talk about their new album, songwriting and fancy dress shopping in Bristol.

The Feeling live at O2 Academy Bristol

Page 9: Bristol LIstings Collective - December 2013

How would you say your sound has changed since Twelve Stops and Home? Dan: I think it’s all just a bit more grown up. But we still sound like us!

The songs on your new album all seem quite heartfelt. Are they written from personal experience?(Richard points to Dan).Dan: Yes, very much so. They have to be, otherwise what’s the point? I think every song has to have a point. And a reason for existing. On this record every song has a very clear reason for being in the world.

And has that always been the case?Dan: Not always in our career, I’ll be honest. There’s been moments when we’ve been pressurised into including songs on records that didn’t really have much of a point. And that’s what we wanted to avoid this time. We wanted to make sure that everything was in its perfect place on the album, saying the perfect thing that was right for that point, in order to make an album that makes sense across the album. We’ve always loved records that are like that so we’ve had the opportunity to make that album without anyone telling us how to do it or pressurising us to do anything other than follow our own instincts.

What’s your process? How does an album come together?Dan: It always starts with the songs. We just have a bunch of songs and keep writing.

Richard: We follow our noses really, don’t we?Dan: Yeah we play the songs together. If I come to the boys with a song, it’s almost obvious in everyone’s head what the instruments are going to do and how we’re going to play it. We push it a little bit; push it this way, push it that way, but it find its voice, the song, in its own right. Everyone just plays what they feel on it. And without thinking about it too much, it just ends up sounding like us.

How are you enjoying Bristol?Richard: I love Bristol!Dan: I love Bristol.Richard: We’ve played here about five times.Dan: Yeah we come here a lot, my brother’s moved here, I’ve got a bunch of friends from here as well. It’s a great place, I really enjoy it. I think it’s a super cool city really.

What did you to in Bristol today?Richard: We went shopping. Actually, I bought a fox outfit on a whim and Dan got a chicken. ‘Cause this shop was hiring it out for £15 a day and they said they would sell it for £30. I was like, I will buy that!(Richard shows us a few photos on his phone of the costume).

Dan: Basically there’s going to be some fox and hen action going on in tomorrow’s show.

What can we expect from tonight’s gig?The set is a nice mixture of material from the first record and the new record. We just picked the songs that we wanted to play the most . So you’ve got all the classics and the hits, but also those songs we love off the new record. And it seems like the audiences really love the new record as well - so that’s kind of lucky!

This year’s family pantomime is the enchanting Cinderella, starring Suzanne Shaw. With belly-laughs aplenty and glitter galore, you could not wish for a better panto - it is the perfect treat for children of all ages (even the grown up ones!).

Starring as the Prince’s loyal and outrageous servant, Dandini, is the hilariously mischievous Louie Spence, the only man on the planet whose personality has more sparkle than Cinderella’s

ballgown. Starring alongside Louie is Hippodrome regular Andy Ford as Cinderella’s loveable best friend, Buttons.

Along with the dance a minute Dandini and our unsung hero Buttons, Cinderella features a glittering combination of everything a traditional pantomime could wish for, a handsome Prince, enchanting Fairy Godmother and the boo-able Ugly Sisters. With a sprinkling of magic from the Fairy Godmother, will Cinderella beat the clock and find the happy ending she

deserves? You’ll have to wait until the clock strikes midnight to find out!

With a sparkling set, stunning costumes, live orchestra and real Shetland ponies, Cinderella has something for everyone.

Featured artist - Louis MasaiAs an established street artist Louis Masai has spent the last 10 months painting some of the most endangered African animals upon the walls of South Africa and Europe.

His latest project ‘Last of My Kind’, opening in Bristol this winter, is to draw focus specifically on critically endangered birds. Masai says, “I have been painting animals on walls for over three years now, at first I was learning how to use my tools, then I became interested in a style, now I realise that thousands of people are watching what I do via the internet.”

‘Last of My Kind’ highlights the plight of some of the most endangered birds around the world,

juxtaposing critically endangered birds... and extinct musicians.

Louis is working alongside Bird Charity The RSPB with projects continuing into next year surrounding their campaign ‘giving nature a home’.

Look out for the ‘Last of My Kind’ murals and installations that will be appearing around Bristol throughout the autumn and winter.

Last of My Kind will take place at the Edwardian Toilets on Woodland Road in Bristol between 22nd November - 6th December.

Bristol’s Fleece has a track record of bringing world-class acts through its doors, from the likes of Oasis and Radiohead to Amy Winehouse. Last month, Har Mar Superstar joined the list of notable musicians to play the venue.

American soul singer Har Mar Superstar has been steadily rising to fame since the release of his self-titled debut album in 2001. As well as his undoubted musical ability, his energetic live performances and eccentric personality have helped gain him a huge cult following. He even has his own ‘day’, September 20th is officially Har Mar Superstar Day in the city of Minneapolis.

Born Sean Tillmann, the singer has said that he initially created Har Mar Superstar as a way to get away with “the more fantastic things in life” but now he and Har Mar are one in the same.

He has become known for his wacky live performances (think mass pillow fights), for which he says he doesn’t rehearse, “I just follow where the energy is and have fun.”

His show at The Fleece set was, as expected, unexpected. He continually delighted his audience with his offbeat antics, including finishing one of his songs from headstand position. We had a chat with the singer beforehand.

Interview by Rachel Morris Photography: Lukcasz Kaminski

Interview: Har Mar SuperstarHar Mar talks to us about his new album Bye Bye 17

Page 47: Bristol LIstings Collective - December 2013

Welcome to Bristol. How do you like touring in England? Thanks! It’s great -the drives are really short and the shows are really fun. I love it.

What did you do in Bristol today?Uhh, got our laundry done and went to a movie.

What did you see?We went to see Thor 2. It was pretty fun.

You seem quite keen to strip off during your live shows. Are we going to be seeing any chest hair tonight?Probably!

How much of Har Mar Superstar is you and how much is a persona? It’s not really that much of a character any more. It’s just me playing the songs that I wrote. It started off as me pretending to be more confident, but now I am more confident so I don’t need to pretend anymore.

Your sound is quite distinctive. How did you find it?I listen to a lot of soul music. Sam Cooke and Otis Redding and Stevie Wonder are some of my favourite artists, so I kind of took inspiration from there.

You’re known best for your live performances. How do you plan those?Well it’s a natural thing. I don’t like rehearsing, I just go for it and figure it out! It comes naturally I guess. I just follow where the energy is and have fun.

Your latest album Bye Bye 17 came out this year. What does the title mean? It’s a coming of age sort of thing. When you turn eighteen in the US it’s kind of a milestone, and I feel like this is the least tongue-in-cheek album I’ve made. It has a more mature sound.

Do you have a favourite song from the album? It changes all the time. I really like the last song ‘Late Night Morning Light’ a lot.

How would you describe your music to anyone who hasn’t heard it?I’d say it’s like soul, R&B, almost Motown-y but sometimes modern.

Adam our wonderful Head Chef has a number of signature dishes – and Chin! Chin! pork belly is one of them. It varies a little in tune with the season, but remains a best seller with customers. The secret’s in the cooking process (twice cooked) – and the spices.“You need to use good quality pork that has been treated with respect. First it’s braised for seven hours, then pressed with a weight that pushes out the fat and makes the meat relax. It’s then solid meat,” he explains.“Now in winter I’m doing it with black pudding and potato puree which looks like chocolate mousse, served with beautiful creamed Savoy cabbages that are in the market, and Granny Smith apple puree. It works beautifully with Indian spices.”

Independent shopping in Bristol: Meet the owners...

5 PointzHow did 5 Pointz start out?I’d had a personal interest in sneaker collecting, hip hop, independent streetwear brands and the whole surrounding culture for a good few years before the idea of starting a shop had ever occurred to me.My two older brothers who were running their own restaurant were offered a vacant shop in Old Market. They weren’t interested in it, but having gone with them I had the idea that it could be an urban clothing store. At the time I was relatively clueless and had no experience of retail but thought perhaps I could pull it off with my passion for hip-hop and everything that goes with that.So I signed a lease and tried my best to get some stock from a list of brands I had put together. This wasn’t easy, as I was just an eighteen year-old kid with no experience in the industry and

so I didn’t get taken too seriously. After a lot of bothering them by phone and email, plus plenty of trips to London, I eventually got a few accounts. 5 Pointz started trading in November 2004.

What was your original idea behind the shop/brand?The name ‘5 Pointz’ is a reference to the infamous graffiti mecca in New York. Most of the brands we stock were founded either in New York or one of the big West Coast Cities, so I thought the shop name should reflect this somehow.

What are the benefits for a customer coming to an independent shop, rather than shopping in big chain stores? When you visit an independent streetwear store like ours, the staff who serve you will be part of a small team who are passionate about the products and everything linked to the culture. I work closely with my staff and everyone knows a lot about the brands. In a big chain store the shop floor staff are unlikely to know the people who select the products and make

Thanks to schemes like the Bristol Pound and ‘Bristol Independents’, Bristol is a city that breeds a culture of independents -particularly when it comes to clothing - and so Bristol is home to some of the best independent clothing stores in the country. We talk to 5 Pointz owner, Dave Perry, about running one of Bristol’s biggest independent streetwear stores.

Page 103: Bristol LIstings Collective - December 2013

What is unique about 5 Pointz as an independent shop?I think every independent shop has its own unique qualities, and I strongly believe they are a vital part of our retail industry. Otherwise everything would be too uniform and boring... and I’m not just saying that as an independent business owner, I feel the same when I’m the customer. I think the most unique thing about us is the range of products we provide, which is rare for an independent. We’ve been able to achieve this because of the continued support of our customers and their appreciation for what we offer. What does the future look like for 5 Pointz? There are always new brands emerging with their own take on streetwear and the aim will continue to be to supply our customers with the best bits. The industry and the consumer is always heading in new directions and it’s important to keep on the ball with it. Our online store is always growing and we’re always trying out new things in regards to that. Also, it’s our ten year anniversary next year, so we’re trying to put together some things to celebrate that, so watch this space...

www.5pointz.co.uk // 0117 9450 555 // 18 Nelson Street, Bristol

the decisions. I think that is a big difference and hopefully makes the experience of shopping at an independent store more enjoyable.

Do you have any exclusive brands in 5 Pointz that shoppers won’t find elsewhere?5 Pointz is the only store in Bristol to stock several of the biggest streetwear brands at the moment, including HUF, Crooks & Castles, The Hundreds and a good few others. Our aim has always been to be very careful with the selection of brands we stock, but to strongly represent the brands that we have believe in.

Today, Dutty offers an alternative vision to that of the High Street, stocking up-to-the-minute fashion, 80’s/90’s vintage, streetwear and customised clothing from a wide range of Bristol’s own designers, including fashion labels from the two owners “Butchi & Gosmos” and “Dutty Girl”.
