Bringing the world together — the Lux Pacifica
Lux Pacifica is an association of lighting societies that represents half the world’s population. The Lux Pacifica
is the quadrennial lighting conference of the lighting societies of North America (USA, Canada & Mexico),
Australia & New Zealand, China, Japan, Thailand, South Africa, Russia, India, Taiwan, South Korea and
Vietnam. Each one of these countries are represented by their lighting associations and not by individuals
The society is governed by a board of directors with one representative from each of the member societies.
The officers of the Lux Pacifica are elected by the board from amongst its members. Dr. Warren Julian
(Australia) is the current Chairman and Dr. Hajimu Nakamura (Japan) is the current Vice Chairman.
Overview:
The Lux Pacifica is the lighting conference of the following lighting societies: India, China, Japan, Thailand,
Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA, South Africa, Mexico, Taiwan, South Korea and Vietnam. It is
based on the Lux Europa, a quadrennial conference of the lighting societies in Europe.
Establishment:
The idea for the Lux Pacifica came from Mr James Jewell (IESNA) and Dr Warren Julian (IESANZ) who regularly
attended the Lux Europa conferences. Over a number of years of idle conversation at CIE and Lux Europa
meetings, they toyed with the idea of a Pacific Rim lighting conference but with differences from the
European model.
The Pacific Rim contains both developed and developing countries; it has countries with strong illuminating
engineering societies and others with none or only fledgling societies; it contains countries where the lighting
design profession is well established and others that are dependent upon foreign designers; and it contains
countries with and without lighting education programs.
History and Development:
In the mid-1980s, a meeting of enthusiasts from the lighting societies of North America, Australia, Japan and
Russia was organized. That meeting decided that a Lux Pacifica was a good idea for the region.
Its goals were that it would be a quadrennial conference supported by the national lighting societies (as with
the Lux Europa) but it would be characterized by a conscious effort to promote good lighting design (by having
specific lighting design sessions), as well as the development and improvement of lighting technologies and to
promote lighting education. The developed countries should assist the developing countries: fellowship and
cooperation were to be hallmarks.
China had joined the CIE and the IESNA (North America) and was actively involved in assisting the CIES, China.
Thus, it became obvious that the first Lux Pacifica should be held in China and after much preparatory work,
the first was indeed held in Shanghai, China, in 1989. By that stage, the Lux Pacifica had grown to include
Hong Kong, Thailand and New Zealand. The 1989 conference was a huge success and its lighting design
objective was met through a special half-day design symposium, to which architects and lighting users were
invited and where presentations were made by leading lighting designers. The design symposium was
extremely popular and successful. There were also sessions on lighting education.
The Shanghai format was adopted for future Lux Pacifica conferences and Thailand hosted the next in 1993 in
Bangkok. That was followed by another successful Lux Pacifica in Nagoya, Japan, in 1997.
The subsequent Lux Pacifica was scheduled for 2001 but in the year 2000, India joined Lux Pacifica. So, the 4th
Lux Pacifica was staged in 2002, in New Delhi, hosted by the Indian Society of Lighting Engineers.
Whilst the original idea was a Pacific Rim regional lighting conference, the literal meaning of pacific is (from
the Latin) “peacemaking”, which is a better interpretation than simply the geographical one. Therefore, Lux
Pacifica (peacemaking or peaceful light) is appropriate as it welcomes other lighting societies to join.
The 5th Lux Pacifica was held in Cairns, Australia, in 2005. Since that conference, South Africa has joined Lux
Pacifica.
The 6th Lux Pacifica was to be held in Kabarovsk in Russia in 2009 but due to the effects of the global financial
crisis, it was moved to Bangkok.
The 7th Lux Pacifica was also held in Bangkok, Thailand in 2013.
Lux Pacifica 2015 and its OBJECTIVE
Objective of Lux Pacifica is to provide an opportunity for harmonizing of lighting standards and for lighting
researchers and designers to present their ideas and research findings to an international audience. The
General Assembly meetings of the Association are held periodically in different countries. India (INDIAN
SOCIETY OF LIGHTING ENGINEERS : ISLE) has won the bid to host Lux Pacifica 2015 in Kolkata in 2015 (from
Friday, the 27th November, 2015 to Sunday, the 29th November, 2015). The importance of this can be seen
from the fact that the rival offers were from USA and Thailand.
The Lux Pacifica now represents over 60% of the world’s population. The international significance of the
Pacific Basin Region continues to increase and Lux Pacifica has enormous potential to achieve its goals.
Lii 2015 (LIGHT INDIA INTERNATIONAL 2015): TRADE SHOW
Along with Lux Pacifica 2015, we are planning to host our regular trade show: Lii 2015 (for the first time in
Kolkata) from 27th November, 2015 to 30th November, 2015 ( 4 days), where the manufacturers from all over
the world will showcase their latest products related to Lighting and Energy Conservation. ISLE is the only
Society in India working for spreading the knowledge of Lighting & Illumination Engineering and also to
conserve Energy. The last Trade Show: Lii 2013, was held at Chennai from 13th to 16th September, 2013. This
Lii 2013 was inaugurated by His Excellency, Dr. K Rosaiah, Governor of Tamil Nadu.
