The Internet Comes to the Automobile What Now?
Background
At the advent of WiMAX and other wirelesscommunication technology, high-speed internet will
become available in the automobile within the nextfew years. However, connectivity in the car is not
new and has so far not been a viable business
model for providers. Therefore the technology
(communication) and service (content)opportunities need to be investigated to determineif and how mobility centric internet applications can
enrich safety, communication, information, and
enjoyment of drivers and passengers. Disciplines: ENG, H&S, BUS, LAW
ObjectivesImplementation of an infrastructure to research,
develop, and test mobility-centric internet
applications Components: Vehicle data node, wireless
communication channels, backend server / tools

Concept Make all data of a car available online for
own (and potentially third party) use, develop car apps using the data; all
data refers to: everything that is beingmeasured and recorded and at all times
Needs Holistic in-vehicle data acquisitionsystem, high-bandwidth data link or atleast regular upload, data storage with
public access and browsing capabilities
Challenges Data link, legal restrictions, user
management
Next Steps Mar-Sep 2010:- Install data acquisition on existing car
- Install data link and storage system- Develop access management and
browsing tools
- Offer data and infrastructure to publicFall 2010: Student developer class
