The most important event in European pharmacology this year, The 16th World Congressof Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (WorldPharma2010), Copenhagen, 17­23 July, 2010is about to start.That will be a memorable event collecting together more than 3000 pharmacologists,1600 from Europe. The outstanding scientific program consists of 700 oral and 2000poster presentations. The program is organized in 18 focused conferences covering themost important areas of basic and clinical pharmacology with their recent advancements.In addition, there will be 26 plenary lectures and 37 society workshops / sponsoredsymposia. EPHAR Workshop in WorldPharma 2010

New opportunities in the pharmacology of neuro­immune interactions

This summer EPHAR will celebrate her 20th anniversary at WorldPharma 2010.Therefore, EPHAR has organized a workshop entitled “New Opportunities in thePharmacology of Neuro­immune interactions” that will be chaired by ThomasGriesbacher fromAustria andAletta Kraneveld from the Netherlands.It is well established that the nervous and immune system interact and regulate oneanother's functions. The neuroendocrine system represents a sensory function for theimmune system wherein leukocytes recognize stimuli that not recognized by peripheraland central nervous system and vise versa. In the past 30 years active research has beenperformed on the complex interaction between neural, neuroendocrine, behavioral andimmunological processes in the pathogenisis of chronic inflammatory conditions andCNS diseases. In this session, Pierangelo Geppetti from University of Florence, Italy, willshed light on the role of neuropeptide receptors in the control of pain and inflammationassociated with migraine. The role and mechanisms of cytokines in sickness behaviorobserved during acute and chronic inflammatory diseases will be presented by Jan PieterKonsman from the University of Bordeaux, France. Aletta Kraneveld from UtrechtUniversity, the Netherlands will discuss the relevance of gut­brain cross talk in thedevelopment of intestinal inflammatory diseases and CNS diseases­associated withintestinal dysfunction.Don't missed this interesting EPHAR workshop on Monday July 19 from 12.45­14.15,meeting room 20.

HISTORY OF EPHAREPHAR was founded at the XIth International Congress of Pharmacology in Amsterdam, in1990. The foundation was prepared by a steering committee headed by Börje Uvnäs.Since its establishment in 1990, the aim of EPHAR was to advance research and education inPharmacology and related sciences and to promote co­operation between National / RegionalPharmacological Societies in Europe. EPHAR was recognized as an affiliate member ofIUPHAR in 1994.In addition, the statutes of EPHAR, approved at its foundation, established that the affairs of theFederation are conducted by a Council, formed by representatives nominated by each Society,and by an Executive Committee. The first President, R. Paoletti (Italy), the first ScientificSecretary, F. Cattabeni (Italy) and the first Executive Committee consisting of 4 further memberswere in office until 1997. Members of the first Executive Committee were W.C. Bowman (UK), G.Fillion (France), H. Scholz (Germany), and H.A.J. Struijker­Boudier (The Netherlands).Since 1990, the Federation has sponsored important scientific events. In particular, EPHAR hascontributed in the organization of residential Courses with a restricted number of participants, thefirst ones being “Molecular Biology in Pharmacology”, Milan, 1990; “Neuroimmunomodulation inPharmacology”, Paris, 1992; “Electrophysiology in Pharmacology”, London, 1993. Courses areaddressed to biomedical scientists willing to improve their knowledge in specific fields ofpharmacology and related sciences. Moreover, the Federation has sponsored a number of“EPHAR Lectures”held in occasions of (joint) meetings of member Societies.The most important scientific events established by the Federation are the

Until now, five such meetings have taken place in different European countries.The congress programs have included plenary lectures, symposia, round tables, and oral andposter communications devoted to the most recent advances in pharmacology and relatedsciences and therefore represented the adequate forum for discussing preclinical, clinical andtherapeutic data. Particular emphasis was given to the impact of biotechnologies on drugdevelopment and to the identification of novel pharmacological approaches to incurablediseases. Sessions were also held on the relationship between science and society in Europe,with particular reference to drug registration, strategies for research funding and training ofpharmacologists.
