Every year legislators from all over the country converge at NCSL. Senator Ellis and other bi-partisan members sponsors a ride to tour the host city.

In 2010, Senator Ellis co-chaired the Rise Across Texas Challenge with Rep. Carol Alvarado. The 870 mile bike ride benefitted the Rise Schools of Texas, which provide early childhood education services to kids with and without disabilities.

During Open Shop participants of all ages fix their own bikes with help from trained volunteer mechanics. During Open Shop people can also buy or earn used parts for their bikes.
