Thinking StickDirections: Cut out the square. Laminate (if desired) and glue the square onto a popsicle stick. Using a read aloud, hold up the thinking stick every time you have a connection, or share your thinking about the text. Encourage your students to think about what you are reading together by allowing them to have a turn holding the thinking stick above their head as they share their thoughts with the class. The thinking stick is a visual reminder to students that as we read, we

have to use our brains to activate our schema (prior knowledge) and think about the text.
