Holiday Inn Dubai Al Barsha, (HIAB) is an owner managed franchised hotel with tag line: ‘The 4Star hotel with a 5Star look’. Priding itself in the superlative service it provides, where safety of its stakeholders is the most important priority as it upholds its vision to be the Best 4 Star Hotel in Dubai.

It is a 309 room 4* Deluxe Hotel located on a prime thoroughfare, Sheikh Zayed Road, in the heart of Dubai, in the locality of Al Barsha. The hotel besides its small inventory of rooms, boasts 9 Food & Beverage outlets. some of which are award-winning, and employs around 300 colleagues from over 30 nationalities and is a hub of diverse cultures.

CSR at HIAB began as philanthropic initiatives when it opened its doors to the public in 2008. With growing commitment towards staff and guests, sustainability emerged as a course that began to run through the core of every business operation. Our compel became, to make HIAB a responsible business to excel in all areas: Economic, Social and Environmental (ESG). While enjoying its profits, having the satisfaction that it is making a measurable positive impact on people.

It was decided that for the Corporation to be truly Socially Responsible, that all our 300 strongstaff force should be Socially Responsible whilst delivering first class service under a backdrop “Ourmonetary profit should only be defined by putting People and Planet first”.

“Loves You Campaign” was launched in 2008 with a remit to go beyond the bottom line and todemonstrate Corporate Social Responsibility.

Thus, ‘ Holiday Inn Loves You Campaign’ (HI-LUC) with its registered hallmark and defined identity and tag-line “Life is not worth living, unless lived for someone else.” was formulated as an entity.

A steering committee to run operations under strict aims, objectives and SOP’s, reporting directly to Corporate Social Responsibility Executive Board (CEB) has been in existence since 2010 to plan initiatives and drives that further its mandate.

Under the flagship of HI-LUC, in the past few years, several initiatives have been undertaken, several collaborations and partnerships both local and international have been entailed.

This booklet highlights how the steering committee have decided to offer their assistance in several ways. Notable are initiatives to people disadvantaged in natural disasters like Flood in Pakistan (2010),Typhoon Haiyan, Philippines (2013), Earthquake in Nepal (2015), by collecting provisions of food, medicine, bedding, etc and shipping to the grief stricken areas.

Locally, education for a blind school child, Ayesha studying at Special Needs Future Development Centre or reuniting a terminally ill mother (Hermelinda) in Dubai to her child in Philippines whom she had not seen for 20 years - or was ever likely to see, were initiatives that whilst enabled us to be sociallyresponsible, engendered great personal satisfaction.

Sustainability is a journey that only betters as time progresses. The seed was planted at the pre-opening appreciation lunch hosted for over 500 of our hotel construction laborers - some of whom had not eaten on a table before or been served by ‘bosses’.

This was the beginning of “Loves You Campaign”, a journey in social responsibility that started with philanthropic and ad-hoc initiatives and has now transformed to a structured process, which is proudly embedded in the way we perform business.

It is with growing commitment from staff, guests and other stakeholders that I am now witnessing Sustainability to emerge as a driving force in every business operation.

We are proud of our strategic approach, our holistic outlook, but mainly for the integration of Sustainability culture throughout HIAB.

This transformation has been empowering to lead; rewarding to watch as it materializes, and every day I renew my commitment to making Sustainability the driver for a better future.

The Garage Sale initiative raised funds to feed FIVE THOUSAND & FOURTEEN children through UNWFP.A small action to help those devastated by the Typhoon. abc is an NGO with a mandate for training hospitalitystaff to become competent through its “English forHospitality Professionals (EHP)” Program.

Executive Chef, Mr. Sameh Youssef very excitedly picked his first batch of produce from our organic garden. His strong team of 12 chefs have started to cook up a storm, as our menus get laced with the organic produce for food and beverage outlets.

Chef Sameh states “It is with pride that we pluck our own herbs and vegetables grown right here on our property knowing that far-reaching benefits are offered to our guests in the taste and innovative cuisine” .

The garden is part of the green initiative as participation in the “UAE Green Festival 2014”.

Just when we thought we had escaped the challenge, we were nominated by our sister hotel, Holiday AFTER 20 YEARS Inn Abu Dhabi.

The management team were in great confusion and huddled together to brainstorm a way out of thechallenge… as they decided to hide behind costumes.

It worked until the CEO, Ms. Roxana Jaffer found out and persuaded them to follow her example andaccept the challenge. Like a true leader, she took up this challenge of pouring cold ice over herself.

The hotel played host to a mother-son reunion – of a terminally ill mother who had not seen her son, since he was less than three years, when she left Philippines, some 20 years ago.

Hermelinda, a breast cancer patient, pined through her illness with a final wish to see her son Jonathan, who was now a young man, having missed his growing years whilst being in Dubai for two decades.

The mother-son re-union was made possible by the drive of a young RJ Bhairavi at Radio Spice 105.4. She put together Air Brunei, to sponsor the air fare, Cosmos travel for the visa and HIAB for the hotel stay as well as other luxuries and facilitated the live airing of the re-union in the breakfast show from 7am to 11am from the hotel lobby.

HIAB presented the mother and son to pleasure trips to Abu Dhabi, restaurants and a Dhow Cruise, applauding Hermelinda for her relentless courage as she kept fighting the life-threatening disease, never giving up hope of meeting her beloved son, knowing that she would not be able to travel to Philippines, not being financially conducive.

HIAB invited construction workers from Dubai-based charity Adopt-a-Camp to dineat its annual corporate Iftar.

In its efforts to make a difference in the life of laborers, who have helped construct many iconic buildings in Dubai, the hotel accorded them a special experience of dining at a Five Star Hotel. The extensive Iftar buffet was a blend of Oriental, Continental and Arabic cuisine, with an array of typical Ramadan beverages. Further the laborers went home extremely spoilt, with special gifts and individual framed pictures as mementos of the evening.

HIAB being an official partner with World Food Programme ofUnited Nations consummated through an executive partnershipin December 2012 pledges to help raise funds to nourish theworlds hungry.

In line with efforts to promote sustainability, HIAB participated in Can Collection drive organized byEmirates Environmental Group (EEG). Our core CSR values are to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Our teamis always on toes when it is about motivating the community on effective waste management. Welook forward to a clean UAE.

EEG gives a lot of priority to can collection as it is harmful to the environment. From January toSeptember 2011, EEG has collected 161,908 kg of aluminum cans, which is mostly from Dubai,followed by other emirates of the United Arab Emirates.

Also known as the ‘Pacific trash vortex’ the GPGP covers an estimated surface area of 1.6 million square kilometres, an area twice the size of Texas or three times the size of France. The mass of the plastic in the GPGP has been recently estimated to be approximately 80,000 tonnes – this weight is equivalent to that of 500 Jumbo Jets!

2. Plastic pollution can now be found on every beach in the worldFrom busy tourist beaches, to uninhabited, tropical islands, nowhere is safe. Every day approximately eight million pieces of plastic pollution find their way into our oceans, causing 100,000 marine mammals and turtles and one million sea birds are killed by marine plastic pollution annually.

3. No more excuses – stop using single use plasticsOut of all of the waste materials that the RAW Foundation surveyed (as they travelled down from Cairo to Cape Town) 95 per cent was plastic – and of the 95 per cent, 98 per cent was single use.

By 2050 there is going to be more plastic (by weight) than fish in the seaThanks to our human addiction to quick and convenient items, such as plastic bottles, bags, food packages, and single-use drinking straws – all of which end up finding their way to the seas in staggering numbers – hundreds of marine species are threatened with extinction due to ingestion, entanglement, and pollution. While this outlook appears incredibly bleak, we still have time to reverse some of the damage that has been done, and save our oceans before it’s too late.
