SHANIA TWAIN – “Now” -It’s been 15 years sinceShania Twain released analbum, so naturally there’s alot of interest, speculation andthe ultimate questions beingasked-can she still cut it?Has she lost it? Given thefact that Shania is the bestselling female artist incountry music history justadds to that pressure. Mostpeople know of her strugglesearly on in her life, her hardwork and dedication to hercraft and her stratosphericrise to the top of the once-stale and confininggenre of countrymusic. Her newbrand of popcountry openeddoors for manyartists whofollowed-and howcan we ever forgetthose outfits! A lot has beensaid, and written about howShania’s voice is noticeablydeeper (she had dysphonia,or hoarseness-she said as aresult of Lyme disease) andyou can hear that on the firstsingle which was released inJune; however there’s nomistaking that this is pureShania; “Life’s About To GetGood” could easily fit ontoone of her earlier albums withno problem. The secondsingle released, “Swingin’With My Eyes Closed”, haseven more of thatrecognizable Shania sound-it’s a reggae meets countryrock number that is verycatchy. I would also say that
“Who’s Gonna Be Your Girl”is the best song in thiscollection. It’s a mid-temponumber that has a hauntingquality to it. Shania gets super-contemporary on the track“Let’s Kiss And Make Up”, asong that’s been described as‘tropical house’, and it’s easyto imagine one of today’stwenty-something femalesuperstars singing this one.It’s not all roses here though;“You Can’t Buy Love” has a‘little too close for comfort’sound like the Phil Collinssongs “You Can’t Hurry Love”and “Don’t Lose My Number”and “Roll Me On The River”has a dramatic delivery butkind of falls short of the mark,
and “We GotSomething TheyDon’t” isunfortunately aless thanm e m o r a b l esong. The album endswith a song thatreally shines aspotlight onShania’s newly
smoky and almost gravellyvoice-but on “Soldier” thatworks so well that I can’timagine her doing thisnumber like this 15 years ago-it is a great song. To sum itall up, it’s great to see thatShania Twain is back, butthere’s no way she can matchthe success she had 24 yearsago. Then again can WayneGretzky play hockey like heused to? Will Paul McCartneyever co-write a song aspowerful as “Let It Be”? Ofcourse not. Out of the 16songs here there are 4 thatare great numbers which rankright up there with the best ofthe best Shania Twain has everdone-and maybe that’s goodenough.
