Itwouldbeinteresttngtonotethevarioussubjects withwhichastrologyisconfounded.Personswithwell-developedintuitionsareoftenfoundtomake correct pre-dictions of events.TheYogisarepersonsofthisdescrip-tion.Theirpeculiarknowledgeiscertainlynotthe resultof anyst udyofastrologicalworks.Wealsofind anotherclassofmenwhoimitatethesemenandalso makestrikingstatements.Binninghamgoldisoften takenforsterlinggold;Germansilverforpuresilver; andwehaveavari etyofinferiorstones,wbite,redand greenthatare oftenmistakenfordiamonds,rubiesand emeralds.Theworldisfullofthisdualcharacterof things.Everydepartmentoftrueknowledgebasits inferiorcounterpartandsowehavea ofmen wbo,posscssmgnooccultpowers,butsecuringthebelp ofafewelementalspirits,practiseimpositiononthe ignorantpublic.Buttheworldisnotwithouta touchstonetodetectthehollownessoftheirpretensions: thesemenwill youafewcorrectparticulars regard-ingremotepastevents,agreatmanyparticulars regardingpresentevents,oneortwoparticularsregarding theimmediatefuture.andnoparticularsataUabout thedistantfuture.Ihaveknownthesemenandtested thetruthoftheirstatements.Thcsemenpretendto beast rologers.Someofthemcarrynobooksatalland makeamazingstattcmentstouchingpasteventsinprose andverseinanextemporesing-songfashionandwithout theleasteffort,evenIhoughtbequestionerisaperfect ; whileothersshowyousomehuge antique eadjan book:andpretendtoreadfromitspages.Thiswas exactlythewayinwhichquestionswererecently answeredbytheBrahminastrologerwhopretendedto readfromthepagesoftheworks of theGreatBhee.makavi Iamsurethathisintell igentfriendseverhada lookintotbebooktoseewhetherwhatwasreadout wasreallywrittenthere,andifso,whetherthewriting wasnotafceshone.In allthesecasestheastrologer,if heisoneatall ,doggedlyrefusestoallowothersto look intohisbook;for,hesays.heisnotpermittedbythe boo,k...deitytodoso!Thereisamorewonderfulmanin Pondicherryatpresent.Hepretendstoreadfromthe worksofNandikeswara.Suchastrologersaremaking vastsumsofmoney.Thestatements theymakearerealiy puzzling ones.Butfortheseandthe wayinwhichtheyare made.theutterwantof preparationandthelike,]should havebeeninclinedtodiscardtheelementof thehelpof VB theelementalspirits.Letthosewhowouldobjecttothis, examinethematter andthenpronouncean opinion.
