Assignments - Enforce a window style for rubrics opened in Assignments | NewAdministrators can use the d2l.Tools.Dropbox.RubricWindowStyle configuration variable to change the way that rubrics display when they open them for assessment in the Assignments tool.

Previously, when instructors opened rubrics within Assignments, the rubrics appeared either in a dialog that covered the assignment submission or in a pop-up window that instructors could move away from the submission. How rubrics appeared depended on the window style configuration in Account Settings.

Most users prefer to have pop-up content appear in a modal dialog, which is the default behavior. Now, administrators can set rubrics to open in a particular window style independent of instructor Account Settings. This choice is particularly useful to organizations who want to have rubrics open in a separate, movable window when instructors view assignment submissions, while at the same time, leaving all other pop-up content to appear within the window style of their choice across all other tools. This feature implements PIE item D2737.

Before the window style can be enforced, it must be configured by an administrator. In the Config Variable Browser, under Tools > Dropbox, the d2l.Tools.Dropbox.RubricWindowStyle variable is set to open rubrics in the style that is specified by the user's Account Settings.

You can change the window style to Always show rubrics in dialogs or Always show rubrics in pop-ups. These settings cause rubrics to open in the specified window type format. A course-level override can be added so that instructors in an individual course can be given a different experience.

To change the window style, you must change the value of the configuration variable before you can use this feature.



Daylight Experience - Class Progress now uses updated styles | UpdatedThe Class Progress tool has been updated to use the Daylight Experience styles. There may be some low-traffic pages within the Class Progress tool that have not fully implemented the Daylight Experience styling.

For the purposes of the early release of the Daylight Experience, it is recommended that you only turn on the Daylight Experience in test environments. In previous releases, you have seen Daylight applied to Brightspace Capture, and Brightspace Assignment Grader for Android, and more recently to Brightspace Learning Environment. By turning on Daylight in your test environment, you can see how it affects core tools and workflows in Brightspace Learning Environment and follow the progress each month as we apply more Daylight design updates across the product suite.

Users Only Tool Change


There is a slight impact to users of the Class Progress tool due to the updated styles.

The feature is now available to clients who turn on the d2l.system.BrightspaceDaylightExperience configuration variable

Daylight Experience - Content page Table of Contents is now responsive to small screen displayThe Content landing page containing the Table of Contents is now responsive to tablet or mobile device screens. The Table of Contents sidebar appears at the top of the mobile page, with the main page contents below it. When you are using search, the sidebar is hidden so that you can read the results below the search field. When you clear the search, the sidebar is visible again.


This feature implements PIE items D2064 and D1832.

Daylight Experience - LMS now uses updated core icons | UpdatedThe Brightspace Learning Environment now uses updated Daylight icons. Work for this feature has been completed in priority order based on page usage. Any low-traffic pages that did not get updated in v 10.6.7 will be completed in 10.6.8.

Daylight Experience - Minor Updates | UpdatedThere have been several minor improvements to the Brightspace Daylight Experience:

Daylight Experience - My Courses widget can use images from curated library | UpdatedWhen you have turned on the Daylight Experience, the My Courses feature is also turned on. In the new My Courses interface, all courses display a default image assigned from the curated image library. Users can then search for different images and change the default image.

Daylight Experience - Responsive Print and Settings links | NewOn mobile devices or narrow displays, there is now an overflow menu for links in the top-right corner of many tool pages. This overflow menu appears as an ellipsis, and contains all of the links that previously resided in the top right corner, such as Settings, Print, and Help.

Slight impact to users who use Brightspace Learning Environment on a tablet or mobile device.



Daylight Experience - Responsive Tables | NewTables are now displayed in the Daylight style, and large tables are now responsive to display on tablet or mobile device screens. When a table is too wide to display in the viewing area, it is obvious that there is additional content beyond the current viewing area, and the user can use a swipe gesture or click a button to view the additional content. In this release, the responsive table functionality has been added to Class Progress and User Progress tools.



For the purposes of the early release of the Daylight Experience, it is recommended that you only turn on the Daylight Experience in test environments. Groups - Single user, member specific groups | UpdatedThere is a new group category type called Single user, member-specific groups. Using this group category creates a group with a single user where the first name and last name of the learner is the name of the group. When a new learner is enrolled in the course a group is automatically created for them. Instructors no longer have to rename groups of one. This new category type is now on by default.

No impact to users. For new clients, the d2l.Tools.Groups.AllowSingleUserNamedGroups configuration variable is turned on by default to enable the single user, member specific group category.

For existing clients, the previous value of the configuration variable persists. This update does not change the value of the configuration variable, that is, whether users can see this option or not in their existing instance of Brightspace Learning Environment.

HTML Editor – Cut and Paste│UpdatedUsers can now copy and paste content from a Microsoft Word document or HTML source and the content retains the look and feel of the source document. This feature implements PIE item D2627.

Intelligent Agents - Tool Improvements | NewBrightspace Learning Environment 10.6.7 introduces new features and functionality for Intelligent Agents:

Scheduled intelligent agents stop running and are automatically disabled if the course is inactive, over (end date passed), or deleted. You can still set up a practice run or a manual run of an intelligent agent at any time in a course with a passed end date. This feature implements PIE item D1156.

Users can now multi-select and delete agents on the Agent List page. The new Restore Agents page allows you to restore deleted agents. All restored agents maintain existing properties and history. Deleted agents do not run if they have a recurring schedule. This feature implements PIE item D2664.

The Practice Run and Run Now options work on disabled agents. You no longer have to enable the agent prior to selecting these options. The enable/disable status only affects scheduled runs and not the agent. Enabled now means that the schedule is enabled for an agent.

There are three new replace strings available for use when composing the email sent with an agent:

{LastLoginDate} - The date the initiating user last logged in or Never if they have not logged in. This lang term can be edited. The date format is Tuesday, September 20, 2016 9:39 AM EDT, for example.



{LastCourseAccessDate} - The date the initiating user last accessed the course or Never if they have not accessed the course. This lang term can be edited. The date format is Tuesday, September 20, 2016 9:39 AM EDT, for example. This feature implements PIE item D2762.

{OrgUnitId} - The org unit ID required to make quicklinks work in the emails sent with an agent.

There is inline help for replace strings with updated text that includes the three new replace strings.


The Agent List page contains a new column that lists the Next Run Date for scheduled agents. There is no next run date if a schedule is not enabled.




The Intelligent Agents Settings page contains a note that indicates the time of day the scheduled agents will run.

Language Management - User Progress tool is now the Class Progress tool | UpdatedTo improve language consistency in the Brightspace platform, the User Progress tool is now called the Class Progress tool. Related page names, permissions, configuration variables, and tool references elsewhere in the Brightspace platform reflect this change. User Progress is still used on pages where a single learner’s progress displays, but Class Progress is used where the progress of all users in a class displays.

Global Change Look and Feel



Slight impact to administrators due to new options in the Login Page Management tool that allow them to specify a headline and background color for the login page.

Administrators specify a headline and background color from the Login Page Management tool in Brightspace Learning Environment.

An administrator must set the following configuration variables:

d2l.Tools.Login.EnableCustomLoginPage

d2l.Tools.Login.OrgLoginPath (or d2l.Tools.Login.OrgMobileLoginPath for mobile)

To access the Login Page Management tool, administrators must have the Manage login page (Organization level) permission.

By default, the headline color is black (#000000) and the background color is transparent. To ensure that users can read all text on the login page, D2L recommends changing the default transparent background to a specific color that reflects your organization's branding.

To ensure Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) Level AA compliance, the headline color picker and background color picker are linked. An icon and tooltip message in each color picker inform the administrator if the color choices meet WCAG AA standards.

If the transparent background is selected, the colors specified in the page theme display in the login page.

This feature does not impact the login page for Brightspace Pulse. To customize the Brightspace Pulse login page, use the Mobile Brand Administration tool in Brightspace Learning Environment.

1. From Admin Tools, select Login Page Management.

2. Under Headline, click the

Change Foreground Color icon.

3. Select a pre-defined color or click More to create a custom color.

4. Under Background Color,

click the Change Background Color icon.

5. Select a pre-defined color or click More to create a custom color.

6. To preview your changes, click Preview.



LTI - Custom Parameter Substitution Variables | UpdatedCustom parameter substitution variables allow specific values to be dynamically substituted for custom parameters requested by a third-party tool, as defined by the LTI 1.1.1 standard specification. Some third-party vendors require substitution variables to support feature functionality, whereas some features are enhanced by the use of substitution variables. For example, a hypothetical use case includes providing a third-party tool the actual course start/end date and the user email address (where both are custom parameters being substituted by substitution variables) which could allow the tool to send the user a reminder about a task if that is a feature the tool provides.

The following additional custom parameter substitution variables are implemented:

Before administrators can use this feature, they must turn on the d2l.Tools.Lti.CustomParamSubstitution.IsEnabled configuration variable.

This data is used to turn on or support a feature the third-party tool provider releases to users.

You must have this configuration variable turned on before you can use this feature.

Quizzes - Create / Edit Multiple Choice Questions | UpdatedThis feature is a visual redesign of the Quizzes tool that improves and modernizes its look and feel. This feature also enables responsive multiple choice question editing layouts.

Administrators and instructors can opt-in or opt-out of this new look and feel. There is no change in the workflow related to creating and editing multiple choice questions.

This feature implements PIE items D977, D1452, and D3320.

Fixed IssuesTo keep you informed about the improvements D2L has made to Brightspace Learning Environment, the Fixed Issues List consists of issues that have been fixed in the current release, unless otherwise noted.

Assignments

PRB0044081Previously, when you attempted to download a PDF file from the file upload screen before it was fully uploaded, the file name might not have been maintained. Until the file is completely uploaded, it exists as a temp file, and a download of this temp file had the name guid.pdf;filename.pdf or view.pdf instead of the correct filename. This problem occurred in any tool or product that allowed you to upload PDF files.

Now, when you download a PDF file from the file upload screen, the correct file name is maintained, as expected.

Found in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.5.0.

Awards

PRB0052712Previously, in a course with sections, when you tried to filter users by section or order them by award leaders, in either direction, the sort order was inaccurate.

Now, in a course with sections, you can filter users by section or order them by awards, as expected.

Calendar

PRB0052548Previously, when printing calendar events, events from only a few courses appeared in the Print Preview.

Now, when printing calendar events, all events from your enrolled courses appear in the Print Preview, as expected.


To reproduce this fix:

1. Enroll a user into two course offerings.

2. Add a calendar event to each course offering.

3. Impersonate the user and go to the Calendar tool in one of the courses.

4. From the context menu displaying your available courses, select all of the available courses.

5. Notice that you see all the events from your enrolled courses within the given time frame.

6. Print the current calendar view.

7. Observe that all of the events that initially displayed in the calendar view appear in the Print Preview, as expected.

Class Progress (formerly User Progress)

PRB0050744Previously, if the quiz restriction Respondus LockDown Browser Required to view quiz feedback and results was enabled, all users received a generic authorization error when they tried to view the quiz attempt using the Class Progress (formerly User Progress) tool.

Now, if the quiz restriction Respondus LockDown Browser Required to view quiz feedback and results is enabled, all users can view the quiz attempt using the Class Progress (formerly User Progress) tool, as expected.



1. As an instructor, create a quiz with at least one question.

2. In the Restrictions tab, make the quiz active.

3. Select Respondus Lockdown Browser required to view quiz feedback and results.

4. As a learner, take the quiz and submit it.

5. As an instructor, grade the quiz attempt and publish the grade.

6. Click Course Admin > View User Progress.

7. Click on the name of the learner that took the quiz.

8. Click Quizzes.



9. For the quiz that you created, click Details.

10. Click Attempt 1.

11. Observe that you can view the quiz attempt, without error.

PRB0052786Previously, when the UserInteractionConsumer service was invoked, and if an ObjectName had more than 1000 characters and if the ObjectUri had more than 2083 characters, the service failed to import messages and stopped processing all other events as it kept trying to process the same message.

Now, when the UserInteractionConsumer service is invoked, and if an ObjectName has more than 1000 characters and if the ObjectUri has more than 2083 characters, the service limits the ObjectName to 1000 characters and truncates the ObjectUri to 2083 characters, saves the event in the FACT_UserInteraction table, and then moves on to process the next event.

Integrations

PRB0051601Previously, when you followed the common workflow to integrate LTIs, the LTI link security settings did not default to the tool provider security settings. This meant that the LTI 1.1 workflow had unexpected additional setup steps.

Now, when you create LTI links using Content, if the URL specified matches an available tool provider, the Use tool provider security settings option is enabled for the LTI link automatically.



1. Create an LTI tool provider.

2. Create the LTI links in the course via Content > Existing Activities > External Learning Tools > Create New.

3. In the Content area, select Existing Activity > External Learning Tools.

4. Select Create New LTI Link, enter a name for the LTI Link and the URL of the LTI Link.

5. Click Create and Insert.

6. Edit the LTI links and observe that the Use tool provider security settings option is enabled.



PRB0051677Previously, when you added External Learning Tool information and subsequently added or updated the Remote Plugin, the Tool Provider Name and Description fields were overwritten.

Intelligent Agents

To reproduce this issue:

1. Ensure you have a course in Brightspace Learning Environment that has at least one module and two content topics.

2. Using an iOS device such as an iPad or iPhone, go to Settings > General > Accessibility, and toggle on VoiceOver.

3. Open Safari, and access your course.

4. Go to the first content topic, and attempt to tap the Next or Previous buttons.

5. Observe that the screen reader doesn't read the button labels.

8. On the submission evaluation page, click the link for the presentation.

9. Observe that the original tab changes to the presentation and the new tab is a blank page.



PRB0052124In the Assignments tool, if you download all video feedback files at one time using the Download All Files button, you cannot view the files.

PRB0052995When users attempt to create an assignment submission folder with Turnitin enabled, if the request contains data that will result in a validation error (such as due date being too far in the past), users see a timeout instead of an error message.

2. Ensure that TurnItIn LTI integration is enabled on the site.

3. Access a course's Assignments area.

4. Create a new assignment submission folder.

5. Set the start date to anything greater than 1 year in the past so the folder will fail TurnItIn's creation validation rules.



6. Save the submission folder.

7. Edit the folder, open the TurnItIn tab, and enabled TurnItIn.

8. Let the system load and wait for an error message: (Turnitin callback not received. Timeout expired after 180 seconds. Contact your administrator if this issue persists).

9. Note that the error message provides no indication that the folder fails TurnItIn's creation validation rules.

Brightspace platform

PRB0052699When navigating to Active Server Pages (ASP) within Brightspace Learning Environment users may experience different results depending on whether or not they currently have an active session in Brightspace Learning Environment.



1. Log in to Brightspace Learning Environment and visit an ASP page, (e.g. the Course Mappings area).

2. Copy the URL from the ASP page.

3. End your session by selecting your name and clicking Log Out.

4. Paste the URL into your browser and load the ASP page.

5. You are directed to the login page to enter your credentials.

6. Notice that after successfully logging in you are taken to your Organization's Homepage and not the location specified by your URL.

7. If you skip step 3 and do not end your session, then the URL takes you directly to the specified page.

Calendar

PRB0053059Copying individual calendar items from one course to another using the Import/Export/Copy Components tool can lead to timeouts and the selected items not copying.

As a workaround, copy all calendar items at once instead of selecting individual items to copy.



1. Access a test course in Brightspace Learning Environment and select Course Admin from the navbar.

2. Select Import/Export/Copy Components.

3. Click Search for offering and search for a course that contains calendar events.



4. Select the radio button for the desired course and click Add Selected.

5. Click Select Components.

6. Check the box for Calendar and the radio button to Select individual items to copy.

7. Click Continue.

8. Select the calendar items you'd like copied into your course and click Continue.

9. Confirm the components you are copying and click Finish.

10. The copy process might timeout and fail to copy the selected Calendar items.

Class Progress (formerly User Progress)

PRB0046968The order the quizzes display in the bar graph in Class Progress (formerly the User Progress tool) is not the same as the order the quizzes display in the quiz list in Class Progress.



1. In a course, create three quizzes and add at least one question to each.

2. Set the quizzes to active.

3. Enroll a learner in the course.

4. Impersonate the learner and attempt all three quizzes.

5. Stop impersonating the learner.

6. As the instructor, grade the quizzes in the same order that you created them.

7. Go to Class Progress and select the user to see their progress.

8. Go to the quizzes section.

9. Look at the quizzes in the bar graph compared to the quizzes in the quiz list and observe that they are ordered differently.

Content

PRB0052789If you have two content modules with start dates in the next seven days, and the Content Arrangement is set to Content Type, an error occurs when you try to view the Course Schedule.

As a workaround, using Manage Dates, remove one of the dates that caused the error, and then in Content, go to Settings > Content Arrangement and select None. Then, re-add the start date.





1. Go to Content and create two content modules.

2. Click Settings, and from the Content Arrangement drop-down, select Content Type.

3. Click Save.

4. Edit the first module you created, and set the start date to tomorrow.

5. Edit the second module you created, and set the start date to two days from now.

6. Go to the Course Schedule.

7. Observe the error pop-up saying your request cannot be completed.

PRB0052896If you update the grade scheme of a selectbox grade item, and that grade item is used in a release condition in a quiz in Content, the content topic might become unavailable.

As a workaround, access the item using Course Builder and remove the release condition that is causing the problem or switch the grade scheme back to the original scheme.



1. Create a selectbox grade item with a grade scheme (scheme A).

2. Create a quiz and attach a Grade Value on a grade item release condition using the grade item you created.

3. Add the quiz to Content.

4. In Grades, change the scheme of the grade item (scheme B).

5. Access Content, and observe the error page when you load the module that contains the quiz or when you load the Table of Contents.

Discussions

PRB0043213Discussion locking dates cannot be modified with the Manage Dates tool.

As a workaround, changes to locking dates for discussions must be made by editing individual topics and forums in the Discussions area.



1. Create a new discussion forum in your course.



2. Edit the forum, and on the properties tab, select Unlock topic for a specific date range from the available locking options.

3. Set a start and end date.

4. Select Save and Close.

5. Access Manage Dates from the Course Admin page.

6. Set your filtering options to filter by specific tools and select Discussions.

7. Click Apply Filter.

8. Locate the newly created discussion forum, hover over the forum name, and select Edit Dates from the context menu.

9. Observe that only the availability dates can be modified.

PRB0052762When discussion topics that have group restrictions are copied, multiple topics with the same name are created.



1. Go to Discussions and create a forum.

2. Create 3 topics in the forum (for example, topic 1, topic 2, and topic 3).

Brightspace ePortfolio and Brightspace ePortfolio Mobile

10. Go to Notifications, and select the Email check box for ePortfolio - feedback added to subscribed items.

11. Impersonate user B and access Brightspace ePortfolio.

12. On the ePortfolio page, click the link of the reflection's name.

13. Click Add Comment, enter some text, and click Add.

Quizzes

PRB0050750If you manually regrade quiz questions from the Questions tab, the quiz statistics might not update to match the associated grade item statistics.

As a workaround, go to Quizzes and in the Users tab, select any quiz attempt and click Save and Close. The quiz statistics should update.





1. Ensure you have a course offering with two learners enrolled.

2. Create a grade item of any kind.

3. Create a quiz with two questions and set it to active.

4. Associate the grade item you created to the quiz.

5. In the Assessment tab, select Allow automatic export to grades and save.

6. Impersonate a learner in the course and attempt the quiz.

7. Impersonate another learner in the course and attempt the quiz.


9. As the instructor, access the quiz for grading and mark the attempts as graded.

10. View the quiz statistics and make note of the current class average.

11. Access Grades, view the statistics for your grade item, and notice that the class average matches the one in the quiz statistics.

12. Go back to the quiz, enter grading mode, and click the Questions tab.

13. Give the first learner a different grade than what they had.

14. Go to Grades, view the statistics for your grade item, and make note of the class average (it should be different than before).

15. Go to Quizzes, view the statistics, and observe that the class average is the same as before but is now different from the grade statistics.

Using the tab button while the flyout is displayed will allow you to move between fields located behind the flyout, prior to dismissing it.



1. Log in to the Brightspace Learning Environment as an administrator.

2. From the Admin tools menu, open the Config Variable Browser.

3. Enable the variable d2l.Tools.Quizzes.NewExperienceOpt-In in a test course.

4. Access the test course and create a new quiz.

5. From the Quiz properties select Add/Edit Questions and create a new Multiple Choice Question.

6. Observe the flyout welcoming you to the new Question Creation Experience with the options to Leave it on or Turn it off.

7. Use the tab button on your keyboard multiple times.

8. After highlighting the available options in the flyout, the inactive fields behind the flyout will be highlighted allowing you to interact with these page elements.

4. Enlarge and then restore down the browser window.

6. Observe that your window scrolls down to display the entire context menu, which prevents access to the Navigation bar and Minibar.

Surveys

PRB0053016When using Internet Explorer 11 to take surveys in Brightspace Learning Environment, the browser doesn't allow you to scroll down far enough to view the Save and Submit buttons.

As a workaround, you can take surveys using an alternate browser or you can increase the zoom on Internet Explorer 11 to display the Save and Submit buttons.
