We've come a long way in the near-five years since we first opened our doors to the BMX fraternity here in Brighton. From our humble beginnings of maxed out credit cards and called in favours we're now proud to be in a position to put out our very own jazzy catalogue and join the upper echelons of the UK BMX retail world.

With a full team of reprobate riders, a second store newly opened, our own indoor riding facility and a key involvement in the construction of the new skatepark at The Level – through supporting a scene that's been so kind to us – we now feel sufficiently established to back up a claim as an integral part of BMX on the south coast.

THE DEPOT SKATEPARK SHOREHAM

The Depot Skatepark is a brand new indoor Skatepark situated 6 miles west of Brighton in an old Parcel Force warehouse, the building is labeled Roller Central as it is also home to the largest roller skate rink in the UK. The Skatepark consists of various quarterpipes, a volcano, jumpboxes, flat-banks, wallrides and drive-ways the park flows really well and has received lots of praise since it was built in late September by renowned ramp builder Fearless Ramps, full of friendly staff the Depot Skatepark is open to the public with sessions everyday, on Tuesdays we run a Brighton BMX Co BMX night, which is proving popular, we have a fully stocked store located on site which is open during session times, so if you mash your bike we will always get you rolling again. GAVSHORTALLIN THE HOT SEAT WITH AN ENIGMA

Having never felt the need to frolic for too long in the fickle limelight of the BMX industry, Proper's Gav

Shortall is something of an enigma who's name sounds familiar to most who ride, but only a select few can

put a face on the myth. And it's a myth that's been compounded by Gav's exodus from his native south

coast to study Philosophy at Durham University in the far reaches of northern England. Here's a quick

conversation about what prompted that move and how his chosen field of academia relates to the art of

bike riding.

Why Philosophy?

Well I kind of skipped education when I was younger, my attendance was good but my attention just wasn't

present. Back then my outlook was fairly one dimensional, I had no motivation to learn at school, but when

I got a bit older I felt as though I had some unfinished business with academia. I've never been too comfort-

able with dogmatic thinking and always find myself somewhat naturally assaulting given assumptions, so

philosophy was a fairly natural choice for me.

What even is philosophy?

In a nut shell it's about thinking clearly and critically, and unlike some other academic subjects it teaches

you how to think and not what to think. Fundamentally it's about looking at the human condition with logic

and reason as your mental tool kit.

That sounds pretty heavy man?

Yeah, before studying philosophy I'd never got a headache from just thinking, but it's a welcomed pain.

You say it's all about logic and reason but there doesn't seem to be too much of that in doing

tricks on a bike. From a philosophical point of view how do you see BMX?

Well I hear what you're saying, and at a glance the two seem very different. However, there's this perennial

question in philosophy that asks us to attempt to define what the 'good life' is, and whether or not it's at-

tainable. This is one of the oldest questions there is and quite often the notion of 'happiness' coincides with

the so called 'good life'. Given that most of us who ride bikes do it because it makes us happy in one way

or another, it sort follows that BMX is a factor in our own rough definition of what amounts to the 'good life',

and in thinking that way we begin to philosophize.

Interesting, so are there any philosophers who really float your boat?

There's no individual or school of thought in philosophy that influences me much more so than others;

sometimes preferences can be the result of whatever mood I find myself in. When, for whatever reason, I'm

feeling a bit pissed off with the world I reach out to the likes of Nietzsche or Camus. If my head is clear then

a little bit of Hume, Nagel or Rawls maybe? And for those rare days when I'm up for a battle I'll try my best to

wrestle with the likes of Godel, Frege or Wittgenstein. Ultimately though I'd say the thinkers that champion

free thought tend to float my boat the most.

Do you think the type of philosopher you are attracted to has been shaped by your background

in the freethinking world of BMX?

Almost certainly, BMX has shaped my philosophical outlook for sure. BMX is mostly counter to conformity,

there are so many social and economic pressures trying to steer you away from it, and that goes right back

to notions of who really is in control.

So you're saying that as a BMX rider you are more in control than your average Joe?

It's possible, whether we acknowledge it or not, that by riding a bike we're exercising our autonomy to some

extent, and maybe more so than others. I occasionally ride the university library campus - there's a pretty

good selection of ledges and manual pads to flute around on - and I'm convinced that my BMX centric

interpretation of that area is strictly limited to a few similar souls who also use it for its intended purpose.

Despite us all knowing that as a BMXer we look at architecture differently, the idea is really more powerful

than one might first realise. By choosing to involve ourselves in riding we actively dissent from the pretty

picture that has been painted for us in wholly legitimate way and to me that amounts to some a form of

control, at least over our environment anyway.

So BMX defines how you see the world around you?

Somewhat, though maybe not as much as it use to. Once you've had your head in the game long enough

it's seemingly impossible to remove those BMX goggles which have that remarkable ability to turn a mun-

dane lump of concrete into something that has infinite potential. In terms of whether BMX influences our

own definition of what the world amounts to, for me that's a little more difficult to say.

Wow, that's some heavy shit, out of all the famous philosophers who'd be the raddest BMXer?

I reckon Jean-Paul Sartre would be on the Dew Tour podium. He's very sure about our freedom to choose

and insists that if we're to live authentically, then it's paramount that we transcend our own 'facticity'.

Basically, Sartre thinks that we always have the power to choose, and in not actively choosing to define

ourselves we are condemned to live in a state of bad faith. So, if Sartre wanted to become the baddest

BMXer to ever grace this earth, whilst doing it in a way that was sympathetic to his philosophy, he'd un-

doubtedly be king.

ALPOOLEWORDS RECORDED FROM THE HOSPITAL BED OF SHAUN JINKS

Al's my best mate, he has been for years. But I don't really know anything about him. He's just always there

on the couch next to me you know. He doesn't really say much. He's one of them geezers who's good at

everything. One of them kids at school who's just annoyingly good at everything they do, even good at

pointless things like cricket and golf.

Then he started riding. He had a bright yellow Haro with a bent top tube when he started. He did kickflips

right away. He's always been one to go straight in at the deep end, he's not bothered about warming up.

He's really good at falling off, probably because he smokes too much, just like me. He's a floor screeder,

he works hard. He's a proper grafter.

I might need some more drugs for this. . . haha. He's just been my riding partner for years, right from the

start really. I used to ride a bit more than him though. I used to bunk off school and ride, I'd go to school to

hang out with him at lunch break.

He once got his foreskin trapped in the fly of his jeans and had to have surgery to get it cut out. He's broken

his pelvis. He's been knocked out way too many times. He used to be too scary to watch ride. He's calmed

down a bit these days, but he's still hardcore.

He likes his women, whereas I like men, so that's one thing we disagree on. Him and his brother work

together all day and don't speak a word to each other. His brother picks him up in the morning and he gets

in the van and that's it, they just don't talk. Not a word all day. Sometimes he just won't speak all day. He's

started to come out of his shell a bit these days though, he comes out partying more now.

He's 28 now, same age as me. He only ever rides Worthing skatepark, that's it. On a rare occasion he might

venture up to Horsham but that's it. . . he loves Worthing though. I really want to get him out of England on

his bike, I want to get him on a roadtrip. He loves FBM. If you could get him on FBM he'd love it so much

he'd kill him self, haha. I'm dying for a piss. . .

SHAUNJINKSPOLAND: A SALTY TRAVELOGUE

It's early evening on a friday when Brighton Bob and I walk into the Chanctonbury Suit of Worthing General

hospital to pay a visit to one of UK BMX's most controversial characters, Shaun Jinks.

It takes a while to track him down as there's some confusion over the spelling of his name. Through a rickety

BMX grapevine of misspelt Facebook posts and unfounded rumours we'd heard he'd had surgery earlier

that day so, with none of the hospital staff knowing which ward he was on, it seemed the Recovery Room

would be a logical place to look.

The nurses there are hostile at first, they don't like visitors in Recovery. But upon mention of his name the

two duty nurses instantly warm to us, "The BMX guy who broke his knee in Poland?" the nurse says with a

smile. From the sly smirk and gentle shake of her head it was obvious that they guy she'd encountered was

the ever cheeky and infinitely mischievous Mr Jinks.

When we finally find him he's sat up in bed on a ward with five other occupied beds. His right leg is heav-

ily bandaged and his bloated foot is stained red from left over iodine. He looks very bored. We walk over

and he greets us with a token cheeky grin. Never one to let life get him down even after his self professed

"week from hell" he's still filled with punchy zest, laughing and cracking jokes as if he's sat on a couch in

his own front room.

After we exchange pleasantries, and when Shaun's done winding up the nurses with his Carry On Matron

style humour, he sets about relaying the story of how he ended up in his present and rather uncomfortable

predicament.

"I was out in Poland on this Proper Bikes shop Tour, even before I got hurt we were joking around that it was

the "Worst Roadtrip Ever". On the first day we spent four hours riding this flat ledge spot. We just sat there

and watched as these dudes did the same tailwhips over and over off two foot high ledges. Then we went

to an indoor park and Miller went 20 foot high doing a 360 over the spine. . . and then we went out drinking!

There's a brief interlude in the story while the tea lady comes around. Shaun gets a cup of tea with milk

and two sugars but, despite his cheeky charm and best efforts, not being injured ourselves, Bob and I are

denied a hot beverage.

"Yeah, then we went out drinking" he continues with an eager enthusiasm, "the Polish bought us shot after

shot of vodka. We were having a good time actually, getting to know the local riders. . . they're really nice

people actually, they just have a different view of BMX. Max Wood was hammered and he was all like "Glass

me!! Glass me!!" So I pick up this pint glass and throw it at him from across the room, it hit him square on

the head with the thick heavy end! It just went "dong!" on his head, fell on the floor and smashed. He was

like "What did you do that for?" I just went "Because you asked me to". Then Miller smashed a glass on his

head and an hour later he's disappeared. Me and Miller carried on partying until we ran out of money, then

we got a taxi back to the hostel. We bumped the taxi and nicked the drivers jacket. It's a massive denim

number, it had his driving license in too. Miller's got the license and I've got the jacket. There's just some-

thing about bumping taxis in a foreign country. . . I just love it" He lets out a laugh at his own behaviour. .

. a token comic book laugh.

The whole way through the story Shaun has been shouting and swearing, with the rest of the ward quiet

and tranquil you couldn't help but feel sorry for his recovering neighbours. He goes on as loud and brash

as ever, unphased by the supposedly calm environment around him "We get back to the room and Max is

there lying on the bed naked, he shouts at us to turn the lights off. I'm just like "wait a minute, I gotta make

this little joint" But he goes mental and starts punching the light bulbs out, it was a right scene. The next day

we ride some more clueless BMX. Things aren't going too well so I decide to hop this stock rail, I wouldn't

have done it normally, but things were a bit dire and we needed clips. As soon as I took off I knew I was

going too slow, I clipped my back wheel and got sent over the bars to the floor. I smashed my knee cap into

five pieces and messed up my wrist, this morning the surgeon said me knee cap looked like the inside of a

crushed up packet of crisps."

His humorous but tragic tale is interrupted again as a round bald man with a swab watch appears at the foot

of his bed to check his vital signs. At first the hospital man tries to crack jokes and make small talk but that's

not really Shaun's style, so his pulse, temperature and blood pressure are recorded in an awkward silence.

With the formalities out the way, Shaun picks up his story once more "Yeah, so I was in a bad way. . . in a

lot of pain. We phoned an ambulance and waited around forever, but the thing just never showed up, so

we had to drive to the hospital. It was horrific, I'm sat in this hospital and everyone's speaking in Polish and

I can't understand a thing. They sucked 130mg of blood off my knee cap, that helped the pain. I was lying

there and these massive Polish dudes are shouting all night and even when the lights went out they just

snored real loud and kept me awake farting all night"

"They wanted to operate on me over there but I would have had to stay for four days afterwards, and if I did

that then I'd miss my flight home, so after one night I discharged myself. I had to, I had no money and no

other way of getting back to England. The others had gone back to Warsaw, that was seven hours from the

hospital I was at, so they put me on the Polski Bus. I had no money and no way of getting hold of anyone, I

tried to spend my last 50 "Golds" – or whatever the money was called over there, we just called it 'Golds' – I

went to buy a top-up for my phone, but the fucking idiot sold me a T-Mobile one but I'm on O2, he wouldn't

let me change it so I kicked off, I threw my toys out the pram and started throwing stuff about the shop. He

wasn't having any of it though, but luckily these nice college girls lent me their phone. To get to the bus I

had to hop 200 yards across the carpark, I had crutches and my leg in a cast, when I eventually got over

there the driver wouldn't let me on because he said I was drunk. I was all sweating and had to argue with

him that I weren't pissed. . . eventually I catch up with the others and five days after I crashed, here I am.

I got a knee held together with wire and three months of doing nothing in front of me. . . I'm never going

back to Poland again."

Jamie first showed up at Worthings Homefield Skatepark on a battered boneshaker of a bike, young, eager,

enthusiastic about riding and keen to learn, Jamie rode every hour of every day, once he had the basics

mastered he progressed with ease he was the first rider I saw who had any nose wheelie trick on lock before

they became the norm, however Jamie’s riding didn’t just stop at technical wizardry, he also had the ability

to boost a 8 or 9 foot air out of mellow 5 foot quarter pipes, a few trips to Nikes famous tunnel spot also

proved that Jamie could sniff out a unique line anywhere. Now riding for Proper Bikes Jamie is travelling and

riding more than ever, Mastering the basics at Homefield park has lead Jamie to bigger and better spots

around Europe, with spot finder and filmer Tea Break Tonash documenting every other move it may take a

while for jamie to hit your screens but Jamies riding won’t be going out of date anytime soon.

45 YEARS OF GETTING RAD @ THE LEVEL

Our shop is situated a feeble grind away from the spiritual home of BMX in Brighton, The Level. Having

already been subjected to numerous face lifts and bouts of concrete surgery over the years, the ancient

site of special BMX interest is once more going under the digger with an ambitious new bowl/plaza design

currently under construction, due to be finished in Spring 2013. This latest state of the art construction at

The Level will be latest in a history that runs as deep as BMX itself.

Even before its beaches were populated by Vespa riding mods and leather clad rockers Brighton has al-

ways been a cultural hub of the south coast. With it's vibrant music scene and fruity disposition it was a no

brainer that the UK's most liberal city would take a shine to the glaring radditude and neon colours of BMX

and skateboarding when they first washed up on the shore in the early 70s.

Situated on a rare spot of flat ground not far from the city centre, the infamous and aptly named Level was

home to one of the UKs very first skateparks. As long ago as the late 70's the park was home to an array

of shredable concrete terrain, including a Romford-esque pool and half pipe. Acting as a steaming curled

out fresh one the park attracted adrenalin seeking young flies from the surrounding areas and a thriving

local scene was born.

During the 80's the park's transitions were graced by some of the grandest and most influential names in

the sport, the defining event being a demo by the Haro Pro Team featuring the likes of Ron Wilkerson and

BMX's founding farther himself, Bob Haro. But, after a few years of heavy seasoning by bikes and boards

alike, by the late 80's that early concrete landscape was slipping into disrepair and the bowls and moguls

were gradually replaced by wooden ramps, one of which was the behemoth vert ramp which saw some of

the most progressive riding and skating of the age.

By the turn of the 90s mother nature had once again taken her toll and one by one the sheets of ply on the

wooded ramps began to peal apart and the remains hauled away on the back of a council truck until all that

was left was the haggard carcass of the miniramp. Luckily, in 95 some money was scrapped together and

Andy Peerless reskinned the old dog and immediately the scene got a sharp kick in the ribs.

Measuring five foot high with three foot decks and no back rail, the simple wooded construction was the

catalyst for one of the most influential ramp riding scenes BMX has ever seen. In the mid 90s – the early

glory days of both BMX and Skateboarding all but dead and forgotten – with no deck space and just two

transitioned walls to play with, the handful of hardcore individuals who religiously sessioned the ramp were

tight in every sense of the word. Feeding off each another and pushing the envelope of technical ramp riding

the locals at the Level received nation wide acclaim. Riders traveled from far a wide to nosepick and back-

side boneless the notorious mini, famous names like Dylan Worsley, Ian Morris, Stu Dawkins Mike Canning,

Mike Seward and Dan Brown all being familiar faces rubbing shoulders on the tiny platforms.

Eventually, like all good things, the mini ramp came to an end and was replaced by a more up-to-date

selection of wooden obstacles in the early 2000's. Although, despite loosing some of the romance of the

glory mini years, thanks in part to the dedication of some locals and Sevenites' experimental 'Brighton Ain't

Ready' project the park maintained a national exposure and was once again slain by some of the biggest

names in the sport, with Seth Kimbrough, Dakota Roche and Sean Sexton amongst the sleuth of US pros

setting tyre on The Level's sacred surface.

And that brings us up to the present day where – assuming you're reading this glorious catalogue within

a few weeks of receiving it – The Level has once again be razed and a whole new chapter in it's history is

soon to begin. Here at Brighton BMX we've been working closely with ramp builder Freestyle to ensure that

the new National Lottery funded bowl and street plaza caters as well as possible for the local BMX scene

we love. Roll on Spring time – here's to another 45 years of getting rad at The Level.
