    d.school comes Tokyo Tech 2020

The startup brainchildren born of Stanford University graduates are undoubtedly impressive: Google, Yahoo, Sun Microsystems, and Cisco to name a few. A continuous motivator behind this success is the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design, also known as Stanford University / d.school, which encourages the creativity of its innovators through Design Thinking. Design Thinking is a methodology for creating innovation through idea generation based on the exploration of various elements to better understand users' needs with 2 major concepts; “Creative Confidence” and “User Centric”. Since 2014, Tokyo Tech has invited d.school faculty to its campus for intensive two-day workshops, and has added design thinking courses to its own curriculum. Due to COVID-19 breakout, the workshop this year will be held on-line.

Thomas Both, Scott Witthouft and David Janka from Stanford University-d.school are going to facilitate this 2-day workshop to encourage students to create new value for society-creative confidence- with exploring insight of users with having empathy, defining issues, generating ideas for solve the issues, and having feedbacks from users by presenting visible solutions (prototypes) with users. Students will be able to get stimulation from their Stanford Univ./d.school style of casual, intensive and speedy facilitation, deferent aspects of the ay of thinking and importance of diversification by other participants who have a various background than you.

We welcome students who are willing to challenge!

I am not confident in group work.

    Carefully planned workshops help students

    develop confidence in group work.

I am not sure about my ultimate goals.

English and Japanese are usually used in discussions,

    depending on student preferences.

I have difficulty in speakingJapanese/English andfeel a language barrier.

Courses provide opportunities for self-reflection and sharing

your ideas on values, leadership, and goals.

I am not sure whether I will advance to a PhD

    course.The ToTAL master’s

    • Can I apply both to ToTAL and educational programs under the WISE programs (Doctoral Program for World-leading Innovative & Smart Education) such as TAC-MI (Tokyo Tech Academy for Convergence of Materials and Informatics) and SSS (Super Smart Society Engineering Education Program)?→ You can apply to both, but are required to select either one to enroll in.We recommend taking ToTAL courses you are interested in regardless of which academy you choose. Some ToTAL courses can be counted as required credits of TAC-MI.

    • Can I take ToTAL courses that I am interested in without registering to ToTAL?→ Yes, you can.

    • I am a Ph.D. student. Can I apply to ToTAL?→ As ToTAL is basically a 5-year program, we only accept master’s course students. You can still take ToTAL courses (except for the Off-Campus Project) without registration in ToTAL.
