The Satellite Applications Catapult is an independent

innovation and technology company, created to foster

growth across the economy through the exploitation of

space. We help organisations make use of and benefit

from satellite technologies, and bring together multi-

disciplinary teams to generate ideas and solutions in an

open innovation environment.

We are based in Harwell, near Didcot, the Catapult was

established in May 2013 by Innovate UK (formerly

known as the Technology Strategy Board) as one of a

network of centres to accelerate the take-up of

emerging technologies and drive economic growth.

Background

the Satellite Applications Catapult is looking to support the creation of better health and wellbeing, empowered by space technologies.

Objectives

Create market and ecosystem for satellite technology to support health and wellbeing:

Shift the supply and demand pattern in healthcare services, especially in rural area, and create a route to market for sat Comms applications.

Shift the demand on management of environmental epidemiology and population health and generate demand for EO innovation.

Create a community of pioneers and change makers to shape the funding landscape based on the capacity to action.

Context

Non-communicable diseases, e.g. cancer, diabetes, dementia, a.k.a. chronic diseases, accounts for 86% of deaths and 77% of the disease burden in Europe. With the rise of NCDs comes a shift in burden from premature mortality to years lived with disability. To address NCDs, we will focus on opportunities for:

• reducing demand on hospitalization (work on healthcare)• reducing demand in healthcare (work beyond healthcare)• to reduce demand in healthcare by putting wellbeing into people’s hands.

NHS - Five Years Forward View

5

The Five Years Forward View (FYFV) and government funding creates a clear market opportunity and size and direction for innovation in domestic healthcare:

• Healthcare and medicine, satellite and space technologies are 2 of 6 named sectors that the UK government has announced to support under the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund – a £4.7Bn increase in R&D over the next 4 years.

• In February 2016 the Treasury signed off investment of £4.2Bn in technology projects for the NHS by 2020/1 in order to underpin the Secretary of State’s drive to a ‘paperless’ NHS.

• The 5YFV (Five Years Forward View) directives have gained traction. In 2015, NHS England has chosen the first 29 vanguards through which new care models are supported in 1) integrated primary and acute care, 2) enhanced health in care home, 3) multispecialty community provider. £200M funding has been allocated since 2016 to the vanguards.

Diabetes affects one in twenty-five people in Scotland, according to current statistics. That’s over 228,000 people.Meanwhile, the figure could be as high as 250,000 as it is estimated that 20,000 people in Scotland remain undiagnosed.

As in many countries, type 2 diabetes is rapidly increasing in Scotland and accounts for about 87% of diabetes in Scotland.Obesity accounts for 80% of Scottish people with type 2 diabetes, according to the latest ‘Scottish Diabetes Survey’ (2009).

“Diabetes could

‘bankrupt’ the NHS in 20 years,”

NHS cost of the direct treatment of diabetes in the UK will increase from £9.8 billion to £16.9 billion over the next 25 years
