The choir competitions of INTERKULTUR To become acquainted with other countries and people, to meet other choirs, to perform distinguished pieces of music, listen to the best, experience competition and enjoy the unique atmosphere of an award ceremony – these are important incentives for many choirs to attend international choir contests. Local get-togethers, encounters across countries or global events like the World Choir Games are able to motivate choirs to aspire to peak performances. Apart from the artistic and cultural experience of a choir tour one wants to compare with others, meet the challenge of benchmarking and get a confirmation of one’s achievements. Politics and cultural institutions have recognized long ago that these choir encounters represent an essential way of cultural international exchange which has grown considerably throughout the last 20 years and is gaining more and more importance. But choir competitions are more than ever in need of competent counselling so that choirs can continue to benefit from the positive effects they desire. Bridges of encounter The INTERKULTUR foundation is a non-profit organisation which devoted itself to support international cultural exchange comprehensively. It provides more than 100.000 contacts to governments, ministries, choirs and conductors, music groups, schools and universities, institutions and important personalities. Its official connections extend to about 140 countries. Since the first event in Budapest in 1988 the INTERKULTUR contests developed into one of the most successful movements within the choir and music community in the last decades. Up to now more than 5.000 choirs with about 250.000 singers from all over the world participated in nearly 100 international competitions. Over the years the INTERKULTUR foundation thus has become an organisation which, in the best sense of the term, builds bridges of cultural encounters - bridges between people of different nationalities, religions and colours of skin. Our Philosophy The INTERKULTUR choir and music competitions are based on the idea of giving all participants the best possible support for their artistic development. Our philosophy is to offer international comparative contests not only for top level ensembles but to make it possible for all groups to compare themselves with others in competition. Regardless of their current level of achievement every choir can take part on equal terms in categories that match their level of achievement and their ambitions.

Extensive Pedagogical Tasks

Independent of their former artistic proficiency choirs will enhance their skills and abilities, get to know artistic standards, draw comparisons and receive stimulating ideas for their future artistic work when facing the challenge of an international competition. Therefore not the starting level but rather the opportunity for artistic advancement is the crucial point for the participation in an international INTERKULTUR competition. Lay and amateur ensembles which face the challenge of taking part in such a competition will profit enormously. Apart from the emotional experience the long-term pedagogical effect of such a challenge is invaluable. Each ensemble which realizes that chance can mark up a success and return home as a “winner” in a wider sense. Appreciation of each performance

Even the evaluation system of the INTERKULTUR choir competitions serves these pedagogical aims. The appreciation of a performance presented consists in receiving a fair appreciation which the choir can proudly present at home. The score system designed especially for INTERKULTUR allows the international jury to award golden, silver and bronze diplomas or medals to the choirs. Each participant that has reached a certain minimum score will receive such a diploma or medal. MUSICA MUNDI ® quality seal For 20 years MUSICA MUNDI® is the exclusive quality seal for all INTERKULTUR events worldwide. It guarantees comparability among all events and has set standards in the world of choir music. Lasting improvements

The effects of the INTERKULTUR philosophy become visible because numerous choirs and orchestras have improved their artistic abilities by participating in the contests and some of them have shown significant improvements in artistic quality over a long period of time. In many cases these are lasting effects in the best pedagogical sense. Most choirs who took part in an INTERKULTUR contest once, return and often show sophisticated performances which result in better ratings.
