Over the Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 25-28, 2010,North American members of the Lithuanian Catholicorganization, Ateitis (Ateitininku federacija) gath-ered at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Chicago to

celebrate the 100th anniversary (100-metis) of the or-ganizations founding. (Highlights from the organiza-tions history were published in Bridges, July/August2010). Over four hundred members from North Amer-ica were joined by more than a half dozen visitorsfrom Lithuania, including organization president,Rozvita Vareikiene, who was elected at the organiza-tions XVI Congress in Vilnius in August 2010, thefirst women to ever hold that office. The principal cel-ebrant at the Masses was the organizations spiritualadvisor, U.S. born Bishop Gintaras Grusas, who nowlives in Lithuania. Also attending were former

Ateitis president, Vygantas Malinauskas, andKestutis Girnius, invited speakers, and the Lithuanias100th anniversary commemoration events committeechair, Agne Markauskaite. The Chicago celebrationwas organized by a special committee, chaired by RasaKasniu-nas, who later was voted by readers of the

Lithunian language weekly newspaper Amerikoslietuvis as the 2010 Person of the Year for her lead-ership in organizing the event.

100-year celebration attendees gathered for ple-

nary symposia with lectures and panel presentationson themes that looked back historically, and towardsthe future - Catholic, Lithuanian, intellectual, and fam-ily values, and the importance of community activism, etc. The weekend began with a celebratory Mass atChicagos Holy Name Cathedral on the first morning.During the weekend, one large hotel room and ahallway featured exhibits of various units, divisions, sororities, fraternities, and other related entities. Aseries of photographs displayed the organizationshistory in decade increments. Other photographs were

brought to Chicago from the Ateitis 100th anniver-sary celebration in Toronto, Canada. Some items in theexhibit, borrowed from the Lithuanian Research andStudies Center in Chicago, were later transported toLithuania for an upcoming exhibit in Vilnius. Theweekend featured a music concert and two separatetracts for younger association members (school age

through high school age). Theyoungest members drew tradi-tional Lithuanian crosses, createdpassports featuring the princi-ples of the organization, and

learned about team spirit throughgames. The concluding banquetfeatured a 100th anniversarycake.

Lithuania OpensNew MuseumThis past November, President DaliaGrybauskaite and Defense MinisterRasa Jukneviciene traveled to the vil-lage of Minaiciai to open a museumwhich was founded in the anti- Sovietguerilla hideout. In 1949 the hideoutwas based under a barn. There is also amonument to the leaders of the fight-ers who announced a declaration ofFebruary 16, 1949, in the hide out.

Lithuania started armed resistanceagainst the Soviet occupation in 1944and the fight continued until 1953when coherent structures of Lithuanianpartisan movement were destroyed. Pi-oneer partisan formations were estab-lished in 1944, later they aggregated

into bigger organizational units: terri-torial units, military districts and terri-tories. Efforts were made to unitemilitary territorial partisan structuresexisting in the occupied Lithuania toestablish an integrated organization ca-pable of struggling for the country'sliberation by political and militarymeans, and to form a joint political andmilitary command of the armed resistance.

An overall convention of Lithuanianpartisan leaders was summoned inMinaiciai village (Radviliskis District)on 2-22 February 1949, discussionstook place from 2 to 10 of February. The organization of Lithuania's armedresistance received the name of theMovement of Lithuania's Liberation inthe bunker of Leonardas Griginis (witha code name Uzpalis), head of theDistrict of Rise, in the farmstead ofStanislovas Miknius in Minaiciaivillage. In the succeeding meetingscommand of the Liberation Movementwas formed, political and armed resist-ance programs, political, ideological, organizational and other activities ofthe Movement, the Statute, and otherissues were drafted.

However, the document preparedthen the 1949 February 16 Declara-tion of the Council of the Movementof Lithuania's Liberation - was of pri-mary importance.

Along with other documents adoptedin the convention, the Declarationformed a legal and political basis forarmed resistance in Lithuania, gave anew character for freedom fighting, le-gitimized the Movement of Lithuania'sLiberation as an organization of over-

all coordinated armed resistanceagainst the Soviet occupation, and theCouncil of the Movement - as the solelegal authority in the territory of theoccupied Lithuania.

Seimas of the Republic of Lithua-nia appreciated the significance of the1949 February 16 Declaration to thesuccession of Lithuania's statehood

and adopted the Law of the Republicof Lithuania on the 1949 February 16Declaration of the Council of theMovement of Lithuanias Liberationon 12 January 1999 awarding for thedocument a status in the legal systemof the Republic of Lithuania, and ac-knowledged it as an act of significanceto the succession of Lithuania's state-hood.

It is symbolic that eight leaders ofthe guerilla movement announced their

declaration one and a half months be-fore the establishment of NATO. Theideals of both acts were the same, saidJukneviciene during the ceremony. Theceremony was also attended by peoplefrom Latvia, which is near theRadviliskis district of Lithuania.

    XXVI Lithuanian Folk Dance Festival

    Melbourne 2010

In December 2010, members of the Zilvinas Folk DanceGroup of Philadelphia packed their dancing shoes, andset off on a journey to bridge the distance between theLithuanian communities in eastern USA and distant Aus-tralia. Every 2 years, the Lithuanians of Australia gatherto celebrate Lithuanian Days, a mix of cultural andsporting events and the Zilvinas dancers were welcomedto participate in the dance festival, which took place on28th December 2010 at the Melbourne Sports andAquatic Centre in Albert Park.

The theme of the dance festival was a day in Lithuania,

with dances representing daytime activities inthe first half of the program. After intermis-sion, the lights dimmed, and the dances re-flected the mystery and mythology ofLithuania after dark. Many of the dances wereperformed for the first time in Australia andwere warmly applauded by the capacity audi-ence. The dances were also new to Zilvinasfrom PA, and had kept the group occupiedlearning a new repertoire for many monthsbefore, under the instruction of their teacherEstera Bendziute-Washofsky and supported bymusic director Lynne Cox.

The co-ordinator of the festival, Zita Sukyshad the challenge of blending 9 Australiandance groups and 2 from the US into a cohe-

sive performance, which she did most ably.Dancers from the very youngest ages,

Ziburelis group from Adelaide, Gegute from Geelong,Gintareliai from Melbourne, to the more mature veterans,Sokdava from Melbourne, Sukurys from Sydney, Zilvinasfrom Philadelphia and all ages in between, Zilvinas fromAdelaide, Linas from Geelong, Malu-nelis and Gintarasfrom Melbourneand Spindulys fromLos Angeles pro-vided a varied andenergetic evenings

entertainment, forthemselves as wellas the audience.Dance can trulybridge distances, ages, and bind per-formers from different lands into a single cultural expe-rience. For one evening, Lithuania under the sun and starscame alive to the scent of eucalyptus trees and under thegaze of the black swans swimming in the nearby lake. Areception for all the dancers and helpers was held after-wards at the Lithuanian Club in North Melbourne. For

the Zilvinas dancers from Philadelphia, the experiencewas an adventurous and motivating one. The first fewdays in Australia were spent adapting to the time change, enjoying the summertime heat in December, exploringthe beautiful city of Sydney, especially the harbor area, with the world renowned Opera House and bridge. A daytrip to the nearby Blue Mountains introduces spectacularmountain scenery, Australian rainforest and the worldssteepest railroad. There were opportunities for close

Lynne Cox, Ramune Zinkute Cobb and Estera Bendziute-Washofskyat the Sydney Harbour - Australia. The Harbour is commonly referred toas the most beautiful natural harbour in the world.

interaction with Australias unique animals and birds, kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, wombats, rainbow lorikeetsetc. Once in Melbourne, the group also took the opportu-nity to travel along the Great Ocean Road, visiting sceniccoastal towns, white sandy beaches, rugged cliffs, locations of shipwrecks and the stone monoliths of theTwelve Apostles. The return through the Otway NationalPark took us through lush tree-fern gullies and toweringmountain ash gullies. Another excursion took us to Sum-merland Beach on Phillip Island to see the famous little

penguins surf in and march up the beach to their nestingplaces.

Participation in the Svente was an honor anda wonderful experience. We look back on thefriendliness of the people we met, the senseof Lithuanian community and cohesiondespite the thousands of miles distance, andthe spectacular sight of so many dancersperforming in unison with pleasure. We hopethat we can continue to build a bridge betweenthe Lithuanian dancers of two distantcontinents.

Ramune Zinkute Cobb has a long association withLithuanian dancing, having performed withSydney "Sukurys" and Kansas City "Aidas"groups, before joining "Zilvinas" in Philadelphia10 years ago. She recently retired from her posi-tion as head of Global Pharmaceutical Researchand Development for a multinational animahealth company, and lives in Newtown,Pennsylvania.
