UPCOMING EVENTS by SchTsch

OPEN TEAMS The middle of the Festival means that we are ready for the main events. We start our Open teams tournament on Wednesday and finish with A group playing additional three rounds on Friday. As always, we have a prize for each group winner and special prizes for different categories, so there is no reason not to give your best until the very end. Rules and regulations for this tournament are just like the software usage license agreements – you never read them until you need them, but please read the rules for the team registration and category descriptions. Leave the rest to us. SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF CONTEST A team consists of 4-6 players. 5th and 6th player can be added later. CTD can exceptionally allow a 7th player or substitute(s) The same player cannot, if not permitted by tournament committee, play for 2 teams. Bidding boxes and bridge mates are used, and top 4 (5) tables use screens. All sessions are played with duplicated boards. Special categories (for the prizes): a. mixed team = at least 2 female players, at least 2 male players b. women's team = all ladies in the team c. junior team = players up to 25 years (born 1991 or later) d. senior team = players minimum 65 years (born 1951 or earlier) e. foreign team = all players from same country, not Croatia f. INTERVIEW ADI ASULIN & HILA LEVI

You are now the rising bridge stars so let’s see how it all started. When and where did you start playing bridge? Adi: I started playing bridge in the elementary school when I was in the 5th grade. Hila: I started playing in the elementary school also, but in the 6th grade, so we can say Adi is the more experienced part of our pair. How long have you been playing together? Adi: We started playing together immediately after Hila started playing. It has been 12 years now. Hila: Too much! You have won European Women’s National Pairs Championships this year in Budapest, is that your biggest success so far? What are your other achievements? Adi: Budapest is definitely our biggest success so far. We have played for Israeli national team in schools and juniors competitions. I have four silver medals, three in schools events and one in junior mixed. Hila: I have only two silvers. I took a break from bridge and went to military for some time to think about life. What is the most important thing for a partnership? Adi: Be patient. Practice a lot. Hila: Respect. Don’t yell at your partner when it goes bad. Adi: Yes, cry alone. Hila: Keep your dignity. It’s difficult sometimes but we try our best. Apart from playing bridge, what do you do in life? Hila: I work in a security company. Adi: She plays bridge as a cover. Hila: Exactly! Adi: I teach bridge, play basketball and will start my 3 years social work study in September. It is your first time in Pula, what do you think about the festival? Adi: A lot of fun! Hila: And the level of bridge is very good. Adi: Tihana is the best. She helps us a lot to make our stay here wonderful.

Hila: We will definitely come here the next year also, but this time with more people from Israel. So you’ll come with your teammates? There is a rumor that you had difficulties finding teammates here in Pula. Did you have some strict conditions? Hila: Not really, but we heard about the rumors. We wanted to play with Poles, we have some sort of special competition with the Poles and we appreciate their bridge so we asked for two Polish guys for the mixed tournaments. What’s next? Adi: We are going to Wroclaw to play in the Mind Games Women Pair. We are practicing here in Pula. Hila: We will change three flights to get there. I hope our luggage will come with us. Adi: Mine never does. I always come at least one day before my luggage, and once it was the whole week.

Having ten cards in two suits brings some value to your hand, especially when you have a fit, but when all four players have ten cards in their two suits and massive fits, you can expect some fireworks. Board-a-match tournament has seen one such board in the round 5.

At the first table we have seen some style differences that have set two different courses for the bidding.

Mestric opened a heart, Thomasberg bid a spade and Zunic splintered in spades. Assmann decided to cue bid and indicate a good raise to the spade game and Mestric stretched a bit with his 5¨ in his effort to help his partner take a proper view on the board. Thomasberg doubled and Zunic retreated to 5© since the diamond bid discouraged him to bid on. When Assmann didn’t find a double on 5© Thomasberg decided to take “a sacrifice” and bid 5ª. Zunic, expecting his partner to have some tricks in diamonds doubled and led a diamond. The winning bid is to pass 5ª and give NS their +650. 6© is down 3, +800 for NS and doubling 5ª is +850, so double rates the worst. Leading a diamond gave an overtrick and +1050 for NS which was a very tough score to beat.

Closed room took a different route right from the start.

Wanha opened a heart but Simic overcalled 2ª, now Knob had to bid a spade cue not necessary showing a spade shortness, Drazic expected his partner to be weak so he simply bid 4ª and Wanha pushed to the fifth level. Simic and Knob had nothing to add so it went down to Drazic who bid 5ª, an obvious “good sacrifice”. With the situation being pretty murky no one dared to double and Knob, not aware that passing 5ª could be the winning action, took a push to 6©. Exchanging -650 for -800 did not seem like a good trade until Drazic, still expecting defensively weak partner, passed 6© which became the final contract when Simic also decided to pass. No double meant -300 for EW which would have won the board even against the par score of 5ª undoubled. Getting 300 in one room and 1050 in another one while par score is 650 seems like a huge overkill. Had it gone the other way around, Zunic passing and Drazic doubling, they would have won the board. Unfortunately for them, each action by itself, doubling 5ª or not doubling 6©, practically made the other pair drawing dead.

Board 4. Dealer West. All Vulnerable.
