One generation will commend your works to one another. They will tell of your mighty acts. Psalm 145:4
I hated singing when I was a child. No amount of guilt or corporal persuasion was going to get me up in front of people singing! That was a problem because my father was a minister. But he was a genius when it came to inspiring a kid to do something he didn’t want to do. He knew how to stir a child’s soul. He knew . . . the
power of bribery! “If you sing in the children’s choir, Johnny, I will take you out for a McDonald’s hamburger.” I was on the platform faster than you could shout, “Amen!”
When my father did that, he knew he was encouraging me to do something of Kingdom value. He knew that singing in worship at a young age would instill a big love for worship in a little heart. That’s what had happened to him, my grandfather and great grandfather—three generations of singing worship-lovers from childhood.
Our children’s choirs begin anew on Sunday evening, September 9. Lots of kids don’t like to do things initially, and that’s okay—don’t force them. Encourage them with a little bribery, if necessary. We are all about a joyful, worshipful time for all our children, regardless of their musical ability. And once your child attends, I can pretty much guarantee that he or she will thrive in the environment that our choir staff fosters. They will love singing in the worship services, preparing for Christmas, preparing for the spring musical, and just having a whole bunch of fun!!
Please do not hesitate to ask questions of our Children’s Director, Shanna Phillips, or me. You can email me at [email protected] or call my cell at 704-280-4703.
