The human heart is mysterious. One doesn’t always know when a memory might strike a resonant chord deep within. Last Saturday at Mass, I thought that I was making a simple announcement about the cancellation of the Wednesday Mass due to a priest’s funeral. However, when I began to speak about the change, memories of this priest I knew quite well surged to the surface. A few parishioners, alums from Saint Mary’s University in Winona, knew him well and were saddened to learn of his death. His name was Father Cyril Andrew Fabian, O.P., a philosophy professor who taught for almost 50 years on Terrace Heights. Father Fabian, a.k.a. “Fabes,” was a legend on campus. He taught me Logic, Ethics and perhaps another course or two. When I returned to my alma mater as chaplain and then rector of our seminary, he became a mentor, colleague and friend.

The first day of Father Fabian’s class began in the same way: he would walk into class and take roll without looking at a sheet of paper; everyone’s name was memorized and often other details, like a hometown. He had witty, concise sayings that were etched into his students’ minds; we called them “Fabisms.” A few students even compiled collections of these gems. One of my favorites: “Good, better, best, never let it rest until the good becomes the better and the better becomes the best.” Father Fabian kept in touch with students through Christmas cards and visits when he was in the area. One of the main reasons he remained at Saint Mary’s was to help assure that seminarians received a good philosophical training in preparation for the study of theology. His priestly identity and actions spoke louder than his words, and he left a lasting impression on many students, faculty and staff.

During my year as chaplain, I invited him to my apartment for dinner and had baked a small apple pie prepared by my mother. As we visited before dinner, I showed him the beautifully browned pie and said, “Doesn’t this look delicious?” His response: “Appearances can be deceiving.” He almost got a chance to wear that pie! My conclusion: Don’t invite a philosopher to dinner. Another time we were in a restaurant together and the waitress was fawning on him like the grandfatherly figure he was. As she left the table, he quoted scripture in Latin: “Noli me tangere!” (Jesus’ words to Mary Magdalene at the tomb after the resurrection, John 20:17). When I asked him how he would translate the phrase (“Stop holding on to me” in the RNAB), he replied, “Unhand me, woman!” Many lessons, many laughs, many memories and a few tears from this dear priest, philosopher and friend. My only regret is that I did not visit him often during his declining years, nor after he went into hospice care. Another professor taught me an important lesson: “Life is too short.” Although he lived 90 years, it was still too short. May he rest in peace! Amen.

Sincerely in Christ,

Steubenville was an awesome experience for all of us who went! The weekend was packed with graces from God, both for the teens and adults. On Saturday night Father Mike Schimtz processed the Blessed Sacrament in the monstrance around the arena. During this Eucharistic adoration Jesus encountered the open hearts of the teens and adults in a powerful way. The participants experienced a lot of crying, laughing, and other spiritual feelings. A few kids had to sit down because they became so aware of Jesus’ love for them. Jesus freed many present because of the tangible faith. More people encountered the living God, knowing their profound worth in Jesus Christ, as beloved sons and daughters of God. The Confession lines were full all weekend, which was great to see. I know personally how healing, strengthening and transforming a good confession is on the journey of a disciple.

I was blessed to serve as a deacon for two Masses over the weekend: one on Saturday morning with Bishop Powers (Diocese of Superior) and the second, on Sunday with our own Bishop Quinn. The celebrations of the Mass with so many youth present was a fantastic gift for me! Apparently, next year either Deacon The Hoang or I will celebrate the travelers’ Mass on Friday afternoon at Steubenville North. I can‘t wait!
