Main St. Sterling, CO Sports By Ken McDowell Sports Editor MERINO – Getting off to a fast start will be key for the Merino Rams this year. Last year the Rams dropped their first three games of the season, but rallied to qualify for the eight-man crossover game where they rolled over Longmont Christian 56-0. But the season came to a close for the Rams in the opening round of the Eight-Man State Playoffs with a 14-6 loss to Kiowa as the Rams posted a 4-6 mark. Merino has eight seniors to help the team get off to a better start, including Marcelino Baptista, Caleb Beede, Gus Gill, Trace Elliott, Jaxson Hastings, Jorden Jole, Curtis Tappy and Nick Vollmer. Juniors are Sean Bellendir, Trevor Bjerke, Ace Conger, Logan Redabaugh and Drew Schendel. A big sophomore class consists of Wyatt Barton, Zhaylon Buckner, Dylan Clifford, Trevor Elliott, Jalen Jole, Jacob Mathews, Logan McCullough, Colin Mertens, Brennon Miller and Jon Ramey. Three freshmen are out for football, including Remington Canfield, Dylan Holman and Chase Legg. Merino has several starters back on offense and defense, which should help the Rams get off to a quicker start. Tappy returns at quarterback with Jorden Jole and Baptista in the backfield. The offensive line also features depth with Trace Elliott at right guard, Vollmer at center and Hastings at end. “We have a lot of starters back and they are all seniors, so we have some experience,” observed Merino Coach Marlan Tramp. “We are very excited about offense, but it’s hard to measure what we have until we play another varsity team. “I think this is a special group of kids, and they are a hard- working group. So we have high expectations. We have always been predominantly a running team, but we also like to be more balanced. I think to be successful you have to be able to move the football, and that’s the number one thing.” Defensively, the Rams have traditionally rotated players to keep a fresh unit throughout the games. Just like the offense, the Merino defensive unit has several starters back from last year. Trace Elliott, Vollmer, Hastings, Baptista and Jorden Jole will lead the defense, according to Tramp. “There again we have good senior leadership on defense,” he added. “We need to have depth on defense to keep kids fresh, and we hope to have a good rotation to be able to do that.” The Rams hope to emerge as one of the top teams in the Plains Conference, which also includes Merino Rams are looking for a faster start in eight-man football defending eight-man state champs Dayspring Christian, state runner- up Caliche, Sedgwick County, Akron and Haxtun. Dayspring was also the conference champion with Caliche runner-up. “I think you have to predict the teams that were at the top last year to be there again this year,” Tramp said. “Dayspring and Caliche are obviously very well coached and very talented, and I think you have to put Sedgwick County in the mix just because they bring back almost their entire team. “It’s a tough league, and it will be the same this year.” Making the post-season is once again another goal for the Rams. “We made the playoffs last year,” Tramp recalled, “but I think what happened to us was that we stumbled in a few games early in the season. That made it a difficult road for us when we got to the playoffs, just because of our record. “So it’s a learning thing for us this year. We know that we have to come out of the gate pretty strong and playing good football from week one.” The Rams will open the season Saturday at home against Hayden at 1:30 p.m. Former Merino Head Coach John Barber officially returns to the staff this season as an assistant. Barber led the Rams to six eight- man state titles before resigning after the 2009 season – Merino’s last state championship. Prairie School of New Raymer will dedicate the new Prairie School gym in honor of longtime former coach, Maggie Kilmer, on Fri., Aug. 29 between the JV and varsity girls’ volleyball games at approximately 5 p.m. A short program will be given followed by refreshments. Coach Kilmer is being honored as a trailblazer for her outstanding contributions to girls’ sports, including the highly successful implementation of Title IX at Prairie School and for her ability to inspire countless student athletes to pursue lives of achievement and purpose far beyond the sports realm. Coach Kilmer coached girls’ basketball for 21 seasons at Prairie, volleyball for 18 seasons and track for 16 seasons and led three Prairie School girls’ teams to win the 1-A State Championships, two in volleyball and one in basketball. In addition to the victories, Prairie teams were consistently at the state tournament and recognized throughout the state. Coach Kilmer truly put Prairie athletics on the state map. Coach Kilmer has also been named Colorado Coach of the Year five times. All interested friends, sports fans and Prairie alumni are encouraged to attend the celebration. Prairie will be hosting the Otis Bulldogs that evening for football and volleyball as well. Maggie Kilmer to be honored Merino seniors this year are (front row left to right) Marcelino Baptista, Caleb Beede, Gus Gill, Trace elliott and (back row left to right) Jaxson Hastings, Jorden Jole, Curtis Tappy and Nick vollmer.
