EASTERN Airways, the UK’s 2nd largest regional airline, is expanding its route network to include services between Southampton and Leeds Bradford Airport.

Leeds is an important route as it links two key commercial centres in a quick and easy way. The route also provides access for people from the north of England to the cruise ships that depart from Southampton to America, Europe, the Baltic and the Caribbean.

Southampton Airport moved quickly to safeguard services after recently learning of Flybe’s intention to withdraw from serving this domestic route early next year. The new fl ights between Southampton and Leeds Bradford start on 20 January 2014, with three services a day between Monday and Friday. In addition, it will also operate a Sunday

afternoon service, providing fl exibility for both business and leisure travellers and ensuring the continuation of air links between two of the UK’s major cities.

Jan Halliday, Director of Marketing and Communications said: "We are delighted to welcome Eastern Airways back onto this key air link between two important business centres. Southampton is steeped in maritime history with a world class port for cruise liners and has strong business links with Yorkshire and the north of England, particularly in the fi nance, insurance, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, manufacturing and construction industries”n Flights are now bookable at www.easternairways.com and also via travel agents.

SOUTHAMPTON Airport’s biggest ever ski season has got underway, as passengers are fl ying out to the new destinations of Innsbruck, Andorra and Grenoble along with annual ski favourites Chambery, Geneva and Salzburg.

Flybe, Europe’s largest independent regional airline, is fl ying passengers to Grenoble. Grenoble is a dynamic city with plenty of history and culture and its proximity to the Alps offers easy access to some of the region’s most popular ski resorts including the world-famous off-piste ski area, La Grave.

Flying to Innsbruck from Southampton with Inghams gives skiers easy access to world class skiing resorts in the heart of the Tirol region in Austria - in particular the main resorts of St. Anton, Mayrhofen

and Kitzbühel. There's also glacier skiing at Hintertux and Stubai, the picturesque village of Alpbach, the high-altitude Obergurgl and Kühtai plus the eight ski centres which surround the elegant Tirolean capital of Innsbruck.

SKIERS FLY OUT OF SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT

CHANNEL Islands based airline, Blue Islands, have increased their capacity between Southampton and Guernsey by 250% with the introduction of their new 66 seat ATR-72 500. The new aircraft arrived into Southampton Airport for the fi rst time on Friday 6th December and was welcomed with a spectacular water cannon salute. The introduction of the new aircraft means that over 110,000 extra seats per year will be available.

The airline looks forward to extending their unique ‘welcome difference’ product to more passengers. Rob Veron, Managing Director of Blue Islands, said “In true Blue Islands fashion, the price quoted is always the price paid, but in addition a very special in fl ight service will be available on our Southampton service. Hot bacon sandwiches for breakfast and full Champagne bar service for the return fl ights – complimentary for all passengers, of course. All Blue Islands passengers will also benefi t from fast-track security at Southampton Airport.”

AURIGNY VOTED BEST SHORT-HAUL AIRLINE IN WHICH? SURVEYONE of the oldest and smallest carriers in the world has been judged as the best short-haul airline in an annual readers’ survey carried out by the infl uential consumer magazine Which? Readers’ scores were based on value, comfort, food & drink, punctuality, luggage allowance and whether they’d recommend to others.

Aurigny, which was launched in 1968 and is owned by the government of the island of Guernsey has held off the challenge from many larger, more well-known airlines. “This is great news and we are obviously delighted,” says Aurigny Commercial Director, Malcolm Coupar. “We might be small but we try very hard to make the passenger experience as enjoyable and stress-free as possible so getting such a commendation from our customers is the best praise there is. ACCESS BY ROADThe airport is situated just outside Southampton city centre, on the interchange of the M3 and M27. Passengers should exit at junction 5 of the M27. ACCESS BY RAILSouthampton Airport Parkway Train Station is just a 60 second walk from the terminal building, making it one of the closest plane-to-train links of any European airport. IT would be hard not to fall in love with the Channel Islands – they are the perfect blend of the UK and the

continent.If you love foreign travel but don’t want

to inconvenienced by the whole different language, different currency, driving on the wrong side of the road thing, they are for you.

And even if you do like all those things, it’s still a fantastic place to go and, as it takes around half an hour to fl y there from Southampton, very convenient too.

You may fi nd yourself beginning to fall in love with Jersey or Guernsey when you spot a huge sandy beach against an azure sea from the window of your plane, falling

deeper still with every cute seaside town, tree-lined avenue, continental-looking harbour and cliff-top view of the Atlantic you discover for yourself.

Flying from Southampton, the journey to Guernsey, Jersey and Alderney is so quick that you could easily go for a day trip, but with each island offering so much, it would be a shame not to stay longer, and would be easy to keep yourself entertained for a week, or even longer.

Everyone will have their own favourite corner of each of the islands. On Jersey, animal lovers are sure to fall in love with the Durrell Wildlife Park, where you can encounter some of the rarest and most fascinating animals on the planet and

Formula 1 fans may never wish to leave The Mansell Collection, while food lovers may prefer to sit down to a meal at one of the island’s many fantastic restaurants, including the Michelin-starred Ocean Restaurant at the Atlantic Hotel or its sister eatery, Mark Jordan at the Beach.

Guernsey is also known for its quality restaurants, and both islands boast the opportunity to enjoy delicious food, including seafood and local produce, at stunning locations.

As well as being rich in good weather, delicious produce, family attractions, and entertainment, the Channel Islands have fascinating histories. You can learn about a diffi cult period in their history – their occupation during the Second World War – at a number of attractions, including the German Occupation Museum and the German hospital on Guernsey and the Jersey War Tunnels and The Channel Islands Military Museum on Jersey or you may wish to enjoy Alderney’s walking, cycling, fi shing and more.

Sark is a car-free island, where you can get around in a horse-drawn carriage or on a bike, and enjoy a more leisurely pace of life. Experience the breathtaking view from La Coupée Bridge.

Whichever island is your base, you may want to take a trip to one or all of the other Channel Islands.

With so much on offer the Channel Islands may be easy to get to, but they’re very hard to leave.

At Southampton Airport we pride ourselves on helping make our passengers’ journeys as easy as possible. From time to time, of course some passengers do experience problems, and when they do, we’re happy to help. Our Breeze Through awards recognise and reward those staff who go the extra mile.

THE Breeze Through award for September went to a crew from the Servisair ramp team - Brent Griffi ths, Terry Wright, Lee Faithful, Shirley Cuppleditch, Pete Digwa and Marc Harris - for their perseverance and customer-focused attitude when assisting a young paraplegic passenger.

The young man arrived at the airport wishing to board his fl ight with a 112kg wheelchair. The team had not previously been advised of the specialist chair and had to work creatively to ensure that the chair could be loaded into the aircraft hold.

The dimensions were tight, the chair could not be collapsed and spreader boards were required to distribute the weight. After the fi rst attempt there was insuffi cient space for the spreader boards, requiring the chair be offl oaded.

The team were committed to fi nding a solution to enable the chair to be loaded so that the passenger could travel, and after removing the arms from the chair the wheelchair fi nally fi tted, allowing the young man to travel and enjoy his holiday.

The Breeze Through award

for October went to a multi-departmental team - Ian Cross, Matt Brierly, Rachael Adams, Pete Lucas, Dean Nicholls, James Howard and Shaun Ingham - for their professionalism and commitment during the October gales.

They stayed on after their shift hours to manage aircraft manoeuvres in thoroughly unpleasant weather conditions including driving rain and strong winds, ensuring passengers were able to Breeze Through the airport as swiftly as possible.

The Breeze Through award for

November went to Bal Gill from Servisair. A family of seven missed their Air France fl ight to Paris Orly when they made a mistake on the time and arrived at the airport late. They were on their way to Disneyland Paris to celebrate a 70th birthday.

Bal went the extra mile to help them; calling the

airline to see what they could offer our passengers, searching the internet to fi nd alternatives and working with Flybe to try and fi nd a solution. Bal spent almost an hour helping these passengers and fi nally found them fl ights.

If Bal had not gone the extra mile, this family may have not made their holiday and would have lost an awful lot of money and a very upset party waiting for them in Paris.

Muir Way, a 100-mile path across Scotland named after the 19th Century Scottish conservationist.

It wouldn't be a trip to Scotland without sampling some of its signature tastes, and whisky is one of them, with the month of May dedicated to the drink.

ITH so much happening in such

a short space of time there is no reason not to visit Scotland in 2014.

Two hundred embroidered panels will start being put together in March and then tour the country until November.

Meanwhile in late February the tenth Glasgow Film Festival rolls in with a host of major premieres and top talent from around the world.

Also not forgetting the world-famous Edinburgh Festival and Fringe Festival.

with operations across the globe, is now targeting the UK with two ships operating from Southampton this year.

The company has decided to bring a second, bigger ship, MSC Magnifi ca, alongside its previous Southampton based vessel, MSC Opera.

This means that for the fi rst time the ever growing number of British passengers will have two MSC ships in Southampton, northern Europe's premier cruising port, to choose from, as well as a wider programme of voyages.

popular destination is the home of Leeds United FC, Elland Road. It is among the largest stadiums in the country with capacity for 38,000 people. It is well worth getting a guided tour around the stadium which costs £8 to £10 and takes place every Friday and Sunday.

SET in the heart of West York-shire and on the banks of the River Aire, Leeds is a city that

has stood the test of time.Originally built as a market town

in the middle ages the city has grown into a thriving metropolis littered with history, markets and independent shops.

One of the city's main sell-ing points is its shopping in its compact city centre. One of the fi rst stops on a shopping spree is the Victoria Quarter's arcades, the Grade II building features stunning Edwardian architecture and is a popular spot.

Also worth a visit is the Leeds Corn Exchange. With its magnifi -cent domed roof, it houses a vast number of independent stores and also boasts a variety of fairs taking place there throughout the year and no trip to Leeds is complete without checking out Europe's largest indoor market - Leeds Kirkgate, which has more than 400 stalls inside and a further 200 outside.

In terms of history, Leeds has a mixture of historical houses and also contains some of the country's most signifi cant industrial heritage which helped Leeds become a major city in England.

The Leeds Industrial Museum

at Armley Mills, was formerly the world's largest woollen mill, now it contains exhibits dating back to the 18th century that show the history of textiles, clothing, engine and locomotive manufacture in the city.

If industrial history isn't your forte, then perhaps Harwood House is among the fi nest estates in the country, and the 18th century treasure house has an art collection to rival the fi nest in England.

ANY holidaymakers simply pass through Faro and head straight

towards the Algarve’s many beaches and golf resorts.

But they are missing out. That’s because the Algarve’s capital has so

much to tempt travellers off the beach making it a worthy city break destination in its own right. With its medieval cobbled streets and rich culture, this distinctly Portugese city is a cut above other coastal resorts.

And boasting more than 300 days of sunshine a year, with direct fl ights from Southampton to Faro you could unscrew a bottle of suncream just a few hours after buying it in an overcast Southampton city centre.

The ancient settlement of Faro is located almost midway along Portugal’s southern coast and boasts great character and delights for everyone to enjoy.

For those who love culture, the 9th century old town or Cidade Velha within the thick medieval walls is not to be missed.

Enter through the neoclassical Arco da Vila designed by Francisco Xavier Fabri and enjoy the views of the orange-tree lined Largo da Sé with its town hall on the left, Bishop’s Palace on the right and the ancient Sé cathedral completed in 1251.

Climb the steps of the bell tower and enjoy spectacular views of the pretty walled town, the wetlands and the sea and look out for storks, which have made this region their home, nesting in chimneys and spires.

The cathedral’s gilded altar and wooden, tiled and marbled chapels and tombs also demand a visit.

There’s a number of museums including the Faro Municipal Museum, churches, ancient buildings and a Jewish quarter all dotted with beautiful cafes and restaurants along the way to rest weary legs.

Shoppers should head to Rua de Santo Antonio for a number of fashion boutiques, ceramic stores and souvenir stands.

Enjoy a delicious meal at the marina where freshly caught seafood and local specialities including cataplana (a popular stew) awaits.

If all the walking hasn’t worn you out, the student population in the city ensures there is a buzzing nightlife with a good theatre scene.

Time your visit for late August and you will witness the annual FolkFaro festival, a lively colourful celebration of folklore with open-air shows, parades and dances by performers from around the world.

For nature lovers, take a boat trip in a painted wooden fi shing boat around the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve’s 60 kilometres of water channels around the marshland, mud

banks, sand banks and salt pans for a close-to-nature experience.

This part of Faro, which is twice the size of Guernsey, became a conservation area in 1987 and is now home to 270 species of birds including fl amingos. There are bird-watching trips on offer, numerous guided walking tours and specialist trips some of which take in the region’s fi shing history including a trip to the markets.

If you simply can’t resist the sand and the sea, head to Faro Island, a peninsula that stretches out into the Atlantic Ocean.

For a secluded beach experience Cape St Mary known as Deserta Island, the most southerly point of mainland Portugal is well worth a visit.

But despite the allure of the beach, it’s certain you will be counting down the hours until you return to the city.

Aberdeen Asset Management's Cowes Week, Isle of Wight

2nd / 9th August Cowes Week returns to the south coast in 2014. The regatta,

which is over 180 years old, sees hundreds of boats com-

pete in races around the Isle of Wight over the course of a

week. Visitors can take a ferry to the Island from South-

ampton, Lymington or Portsmouth.

Nightlife and Eating OutSouthampton has a rich nightlife and ‘eating out’ culture, with a fantastic selection of bars, nightclubs, pubs and eateries to tantalise the taste buds. The upmarket areas of Oxford Street and Ocean Village offer fi ne dining cuisine from around the world, with top class cocktails and friendly hospitality. At the other end of the city centre, Bedford Place provides a relaxed environment with nightclubs, pubs and bars to suit a range of interests.

The city has a thriving music scene with popular late night venues such as the Joiners, The Hobbit and the Guildhall providing entertainment throughout the year. Theatre goers will not be disappointed with a night at the Mayfl ower Theatre, home to the best touring West End shows in a beautifully preserved setting.

Out & About Nearby Southampton’s excellent location and great transport links mean that it is easily accessible to many top destinations. To the west of the city lies the New Forest National Park, home to miles of beautiful countryside, unique wildlife and scenic market towns such as Lymington.

To the east you’ll fi nd the waterfront city of Portsmouth, home of the Royal Navy and attractions which include Gunwharf Quays, the Spinnaker Tower and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. The medieval city of Winchester is located to the north of Southampton. Here you can soak up the sights of the regular markets, independent shops and historic landmarks such as the Cathedral and King Arthur’s Round Table.

Visitors wishing to stop off at the Isle of Wight can hop on a Red Funnel ferry from Southampton’s Town Quay area. The ferries stop in the pretty town of Cowes, known for its traditional pubs, boutique shopping and yachting culture.

EASTLEIGH’S Pavilion on the Park has been awarded a special grant from the Southampton Airport Big Idea Community Fund to build a new outdoor activity building, opening on to Fleming Park. The new 4all Hangar will provide storage for specialist cycles and a focal point for developing work skills, independent living skills and recreation & leisure experiences.

Jim Vaughan, Chairman of the Eastleigh Youth Trust and The Pavilion on the Park said: “Without this grant we would not have been able to proceed with our permanent store for 22 specialist cycles used in our Cycles 4 All’ project, or for the equipment needed for our new ‘Challenge 4 All’ and ‘Climate 4 All’ initiatives. The grant will allow us to build a store that opens onto Fleming Park, making it safer and much more convenient for our volunteers to prepare equipment for use, and for participants to experience and enjoy the new urban park area. ‘Smiles on faces’ are what we are looking forward to - of enjoyment and achievement!”

Building work is set to begin in February with an aim for completion before summer.

Girl Guides enjoy First Aid training thanks to Southampton Airport Fire Service

Southampton Airport’s ‘Mo Bros’ Grow for Movember 2013GENTS across Southampton Airport were sporting a range of moustaches last November for the world-wide phenomenon that is Movember – having fun while raising money for the serious issue of men's health; specifi cally prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men’s mental health.

Female staff and follicly challenged chaps were also joining in the fundraising fun by sporting fake moustaches. Even passengers got involved by voting for their favourite Southampton Airport moustache on Facebook and posing for photos, showcasing their own moustaches.

Jan Halliday, Southampton Airport’s Director of Marketing and Communications said: “It’s

been fantastic to see so many people participating in Movember and everyone has been watching the progress each day. It’s a

great cause and it has amazed us how generous everyone has been in helping us raise hundreds of pounds for charity.”

TEN Girl Guides from the 1st Hedge End Guides group can now boast a fi rst aid qualifi cation after successfully completing training provided by Southampton Airport Fire Service. The one day fi rst aid qualifi cation is a requirement for anyone undertaking awards such as Duke of Edinburgh's Award or The Baden Powell Challenge Award in Girlguiding and by adult volunteers in organisations such as Scouting and Guiding.

Wendy Haley said “First Aid is an important life skill. All the Guides that attended are at present working towards their Baden Powell Challenge Award (the highest award in the Guiding section) and the completion of this fi rst aid course counts towards the award. The Guides enjoyed the course and it was well delivered by two instructors at the airport. I am most grateful to them for giving up their time to deliver this important course for the Guides.”

Southampton Airport Fire Service provide regular one and three day fi rst aid and health and safety at work training to a wide range of groups including businesses, schools, youth groups and community organisations.
