Learn How To Play Pickleball

Thursday, July 12th at 6:30 PM!

Pickleball is a fun game played on half of a tennis court with a paddle about twice the size of a ping

pong paddle and a hollow plastic ball about the size of a baseball. Each team has two players. There is

much less running than in tennis, and many people are still playing well into their eighties. We would

love to introduce this game to more of our residents. On Thursday, July 12th at 6:30 PM there will be a good opportunity to learn how to play pickleball. We

will have experienced players teaching how to play this fun game, including: the basic rules, how to

score, how to serve the ball, and how to volley. Currently, there are three scheduled times each week to play at Avenbury Lakes:

Tuesdays at 6:30 PM Fridays at 10 AM (ladies only) Saturdays at 9 AM* If we can add more players, we will try to add another regular play time to the above schedule. Balls and

paddles are provided, so there is no cost to you. If you can not make the July 12th event, please come to

any of our regular playdates. New players are always welcome! If there is rain on July 12th, July 19th will be the make-up date at the same time (6:30 PM)

If you have any questions, please call Jim Lally at 695-0109 or Bob Peter at 695-0985.

Landscape News

Landscape News for July 2018 It has been hot with rain which has caused growth on our

plants. If the weather changes and we have two weeks

without rain, we must water our flowers, bushes and near-

by trees around our homes. Container plants need to be watered every other

day if their soil is dry. Pinch back petunias, impatience, sedum, salvia or

other flowers that have gotten leggy, to produce more flowers. Also continue

pinching mums until the end of July. Knock Japanese beetles off your roses, into a jar of soapy water. Aphids and

mites can be controlled by spraying with water or using Safer Insecticidal

Soap.

If you use fertilizer there are three numbers on the label. For 5-10-5 the

fertilizer contains 5% nitrogen, 10% phosphorus and 5% potassium.

Nitrogen feeds foliage, phosphorus produces flowers, fruits and strong roots.

Potassium is needed to keep the plant healthy and strong. For a plant like

Hosta, with green leaves, it needs more nitrogen. For lots of flowers choose a

fertilizer with a middle number that is higher than the other numbers.

Clean your bird bath weekly to prevent bacteria build up and to prevent

mosquitos from breeding. Plant deer and rabbit resistant plants by looking for sharp prickly or fuzzy

foliage or stems, and for flowers and foliage with strong smelly fragrances.

July is a good time to take your house plants outside to wash off dust. Place

them in a shaded area to dry. If your patio or walkway has green mold on it, use ‘Wet and Forget’

available at Costco. It takes some time, but it really works.

Plants that do well in clay soil are Purple Coneflowers, Daylillies, Hardy

Hibiscus, Russian Sage and Yarrow. Before planting in clay soil it is useful

to mix in six inches of organic matter before adding the plant.

Garden Hints Pull or hoe weeds between vegetable rows. Remove suckers from tomato

plants to keep energy in the main stems. If you notice insects or damage on

vegetable leaves, spray the top and bottom sides of leaves with Safer

Insecticidal Soap. Continue to plant a second crop of radish and bush beans.

Continue to water your garden every second day if we don’t have rain.

Due to our late spring this year, we’ll have to wait until possibly the end of

July, to taste our first tomatoes. www.GardenGateMagazine.com; ‘Month-by-Month Gardening in Ohio’ by

Community Manager Update

Just thinking of Christmas In July; That is still what we are celebrating on Monday

mornings at Bible Study. The book of Romans helps us understand WHY there is a

Christmas and know that Jesus is the Reason for the Season. Everyone is welcome to

join in. Bible Study begins at10:30 AM each Monday morning and ends at Noon. We

meet in the Lodge. Please call Phyllis Barrett if you have any questions 440-465-5312.

Bible Study

Streets: The major asphalt work has been completed for 2018. Seal coating of the

roads and driveways was completed on Worthington, Southampton, Charles Court

and Hathaway. Thank you all for your patience!! Roof Replacements: We are well into Phase 2 of the roof replacement project affecting 56 addresses

on the West side of Langford, 20 addresses on Manchester and all of Worthington. Work will contin-

ue throughout the summer and into the fall. There is a Port-a-Potty in the RV Parking Lot for the

crew and other large equipment is temporarily placed in Visitor Parking near the work areas. Mate-

rials are placed in current and soon to be done driveway and yard areas. Roofing crew members can

be identified by shirts that say Final Touch. Please avoid active work areas. If you have any ques-

tions, contact Deb or Joi at the Information Center (937-9441). Brightview Update: The Round 2 Turf application including Merit for grubs and spray for thistle in

meadow areas was completed in June. Brightview is now on the regular mowing schedule (Tues,

Wed, Thurs, Friday) UNLESS weather or Holidays change it. IRRIGATION SYSTEMS should only

be used early in the morning around 2 or 3AM and only as weather conditions indicate. We strongly

encourage all residents with Irrigation Systems to use a Solar Sync or similar device that automati-

cally adjusts the amount and duration of water used based on rainfall, temperature, wind and other

factors. These devices save you money on your water bill and assure that turf areas are not damaged

by excessive irrigation. The original rain gauges set up with Irrigation Systems here at Avenbury are

generally no longer functioning. Newer devices are now available that are a big improvement! Your

Irrigation Contractor can discuss options with you. PROPERTY ENHANCEMENTS: Several com-

mon area beds are getting a face lift. The bed at the corner of Shakespeare and Middleton and two

beds at the corner of Pembrooke and Nottingham have had large grasses removed and smaller grass-

es with perennials added. These changes should improve the appearance of the beds and work better

in the limited space. In addition new trees have been planted around the community where older

trees had died. Trees and shrubs will continue to be pruned this month. Pool Openings/Closings: Check the AvenburyLakes.com website for pool information under the News

and Events tab. This is updated daily based on weather conditions. Fireplace Reminder: Remember to turn off the pilot light for your fireplace in the summer months. It

will save money on your gas bill and not add any heat to your home forcing your AC to work harder.

Also, if you have not had your fireplace cleaned and serviced in a while, it is a good idea to have a

contractor check the equipment for safe operation!!

Yard Waste: If you have yard waste that does not fit in your regular trash container, please put that

in a clearly marked bag as yard waste and put it out on your regular trash day. Brightview does not

pick up yard waste they have not generated. Summer Safety: A reminder from the Avon Police Department to close your overhead garage door all

the way down for security.

Important Announcement

Thank you for making our third annual clean-up a

huge success in spite of the weather. I would like to

thank the following for their help: Colleen Battle,

Bill Bogner, Bob Becht, Barry Himebauch,

Martha Hunter, Sandy Shumway, Winnie Walter,

Jean Lane, Dusty Lane, Peg Sebastian, Bob Peter,

Mary Firis, Maurine Mescan, Mary Ann Hassel,

Mike Teichman, Margo Hirth, Gary Hawkinson,

Linda Vencel, Judy Wagner, Donna Dugan,

Sharen Svec and Deb Bryan. ~Phyllis Neidhardt, Landscape Chairperson~

I want to give a special thanks to

Art Davis, Karen and Bob Kennedy,

Mary Sterricker and Rocco Surace

for helping move the Social

Committee things out of the

library closet and moving them to

the small conference room by

The Lodge Office. I have measured

for the boxes that we need and will

get the list to Deb Bryan. Also, the

file cabinet is now organized. I also want to thank Lenny for mov-

ing everything for us. You all did a great job! ~Mary Lou McMahon~

The Activity Book is prepared in chronological order by event date, please do not move

or take out the sign-up sheets or event dividers. This causes confusion to the residents

who want to sign up for events and to the Lodge Administrator for marking partici-

pants paid and preparing paid participant lists for the chairperson of the event.

When signing up for an event, please do not write your name over a crossed out name, use the next

available open spot. Many times events are on a “wait list” and the ones who signed up on those sheets

will be first in line to take the crossed off spots. It is not fair to those who are already on the “wait list”

for anyone to jump ahead of them. If you write your name above a crossed out participant, your name

will be removed and placed in the next available open spot, if possible.

When paying for events, please remember that EXACT payment must be made and each event requires

a separate payment. We do not have the ability to make change or to separate payments.

Please do not leave notes in the payment box. There is a mail slot on the Lodge Office door, please drop

them there. The payment box is not checked daily, and some issues require immediate attention. Also,

when leaving a note, please leave your contact information, in case we have further questions to get the

issue resolved in a more timely manner.

Thank you for your cooperation!

I would like to thank neighbors, friends and

members of the Avenbury Golf League for all of

the cards, prayers and visitation at the passing of

Duane. Also, for the attendance at mass.

Sincerely, ~Joan Baughman and Family~

The June Coffee by the Pool was a great success

due to the wonderful committee! Thank you to

Clare Skor, Art and Maureen Davis, Linda Davis,

Mary Firis, Winnie Walter and Sandra Shumway,

Margret Lally, Kay Hogan and Ev Hagedorn.

Special thanks to Mike Skor for helping us with

set-ups and take-downs. ~Kathy Bogner, Chairperson~
