Judges Profi les

Mrs M Lambert (Blenmerrow)2021 marks 50 years since we brought home our fi rst Sheltie. She was not show quality but then we were only thinking of having a pet. However, after visiting a show just to look around we decided it would be nice to take part. We had contacted some exhibitors and took their advice. This led to us having two bitches on breeding terms, one from Margaret Osborne - Shiel and the other from Peggy House – Ravensbeck. A second bitch from Peggy House, Ravensbeck Spring Fashion was the bitch who helped us establish our own line. She was a daughter of Ch Jefsfi re Freelancer and her mother was litter sister to Ch Riverhill Ringmaster’s dam.

Our fi rst Champion Blenmerrow Brewmaster was made up in 1985, closely followed by Ch Blenmerrow Oak Apple, Crufts Best of Breed winner in 1987. Since then, we have enjoyed many years of show and breeding success producing champions at home and abroad. Our latest Champion Blenmerrow Music Maker is a grandson of Ch Blenmerrow Melveen Making Waves, Crufts BOB winner in 2002 and the only Sheltie to have won all three categories of the Sheltie of the Year competition, Puppy, Adult and Veteran. Blenmerrow Barnaby was a prolifi c Sire and had champion offspring in many countries around the world including our own lovely Ch Shaylin Starry Eyed at Blenmerrow.

I have been judging in the UK for many years and in 2019 I judged the bitches at Crufts. I have had the privilege of judging in many other countries including Australia, Russia, Scandinavia, Germany, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic and had the pleasure of meeting some lovely dogs and equally lovely people.

I have been lecturing on the breed standard for the Training of Judges Scheme for several years and I am an assessor on the examination panel and give private tuition to candidates.

It is an honour to have been invited to judge at the ESSC Championship Show again and I am very much looking forward to it.

Mrs B A Thornley (Felthorn)Having bought our fi rst Sheltie in 1962 the affi x Felthorn was registered in joint names with my husband in 1963, our fi rst Sheltie litter being born in 1965.

Since that time, we have bred ten UK champions in the three main breed colours, two Australian, one South African and 7 European International champions. We also have the distinction of being the only breeders in the history of the breed in the UK to have bred four generations of champion blue merle bitches.

My fi rst open show judging appointment in the breed was in 1970. My fi rst championship show appointment was in 1978. I have judged the breed in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Denmark, Holland, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Australia, Czech Republic, New Zealand and the U.S.A. In the UK at open show level, I have judged other Pastoral Breeds. I judged Shelties at Crufts in 1995.

I am a lecturer for the English Shetland Sheepdog Club Training of Judges Scheme and lecture on the Breed Standard, Conformation and Movement and Judging Procedures. I have also lectured on the Shetland Sheepdog to other breed clubs both in the U.K. and overseas as well for the KC Judges Development Programme.

I wrote the script for the English Shetland Sheepdog Club’s Breed Standard DVD as well as leading the production team.

In addition to being an Assessor for the English Shetland Sheepdog Club’s Training of Judges Scheme, I am a Kennel Club approved evaluator of prospective championship show judges in the breed.

I am the Shetland Sheepdog Breed representative to the Kennel Club Liaison Breeds Council.

I was accepted as a full member of the UK Kennel Club in 1991.

I am fully committed to the future of the Shetland Sheepdog and much of my time is devoted to promoting the maintenance of the correct breed type both in the UK and overseas.

16. DOGS IN VEHICLES ON HOT DAYS. Your dog is vulnerable and at risk during hot weather and the Kennel Club offers the following guidance to help guide you through the do’s and don’ts travelling to and whilst at KC licensed events. • When travelling to a show please take a moment to consider whether the route to the show is on a busy

holiday route, and leave earlier to avoid increased time in traffi c jams. • If your vehicle is not air-conditioned seriously consider whether travelling to the show is a good idea at all. • The vehicle should be as fully ventilated as possible, and plenty of stops should be taken, with lots of

water available to drink.• Ensure your dog is not sitting in full sunlight. There should be plenty of free fl owing air around the dog.• When at the show, never leave your dog in the vehicle.• Keep the dog in the shade - take your own shade for example a large umbrella and always have plenty

of water available to drink so your dog stays well hydrated.• Avoid your dog taking part in unnecessary exertion, or from standing in exposed sunlight for extended

lengths of time. Remember, if you feel hot your dog is very likely to feel much hotter and dehydrated, and this could lead to dire results. Please look after your dog’s welfare.

WARNING: IF YOUR DOG IS FOUND TO BE AT RISK FORCIBLE ENTRY TO YOUR VEHICLE MAY BE NECESSARY WITHOUT LIABILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED.

17. Anyone whose dog is entered at a Kennel Club licensed event should take all reasonable steps to ensure the needs of their dog(s) are met, and should not put a dog’s health and welfare at risk by any action, default, omission or otherwise. Breach of Kennel Club Regulations in this respect may be referred to the Board for disciplinary action under the Kennel Club Rules and Regulations.
