GUIDE

GREETINGS BREBEUF JESUIT FAMILIES,

I hope you’ve had a wonderful summer so far! It’s been great to see many of our returning students and especially our new

incoming freshmen and transfer students around the building for summer school, team workouts, and work-study. July is the

time when we are gearing up and looking forward to the coming school year!

Th is past year was my fi rst as Principal, along with our new President, Fr. Jack Dennis, S.J. It was a fantastic year, and we are

truly excited about the future of our school. I feel blessed to serve as the 11th Principal of Brebeuf Jesuit and to experience the

support of our fantastic students, parents, faculty, staff , alumni, and supporters.

When I think about what makes this the great school that it is, I think fi rst about our Jesuit character and the way it is

exhibited throughout our school community. I am constantly being re-inspired as I learn about the many layers and meanings

of Jesuit education. Here are some words from Pope Francis, written

for an address to a group of Jesuit school students and educators:

“In following what St Ignatius teaches us, the main element at school

is to learn to be magnanimous. … What does being magnanimous

mean? It means having a great heart, having greatness of mind; it

means having great ideals, the wish to do great things, to respond to

what God asks of us. Hence also, for this very reason, to do well the

routine things of every day and all the daily actions, tasks, meetings

with people; doing the little everyday things with a great heart open

to God and to others. It is therefore important to cultivate human

formation with a view to magnanimity. School does not only broaden

your intellectual dimension but also your human one. And I think

that Jesuit schools take special care to develop human virtues: loyalty,

respect, faithfulness and dedication.”

I love this idea of being magnanimous, and I feel like I see it every day

in the halls of Brebeuf Jesuit. From just this summer, I think of an incoming freshman named Bo Richey, from Zionsville. Bo

had planned to spend the summer with a combination of work-study along with football practice, but an injury derailed both

of those plans. So instead, Bo has completed his work-study hours with offi ce tasks here – fi ling, organizing, and labeling for

several projects. And he has still gone to football workouts to be present with the team through the summer. Th ough he could

have been sullen about the injury – as he said, “I like playing sports, not watching sports” – instead he has been a great worker

in every way, has endeared himself to the staff and has even chosen to see the bright side of the situation while looking forward

and working toward being back on the fi eld in the fall.

So, as we gear up to return to school, I want to invite you to refl ect on the places in which you’ve seen magnanimity in our

community. It’s just one aspect of Jesuit education which gives us all something to which to aspire. I hope that you are as

energized for the coming school year as I am!

Included in this mailing is a variety of information that we hope you fi nd useful. We aim to provide you with great service

across the board, so please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have. Th e Principal’s Offi ce is open

throughout the summer, and our offi ce number is 317.524.7080. I also encourage you to email me directly any time at

[email protected].

On behalf of the entire faculty and staff of Brebeuf Jesuit, I want to thank you for entrusting us with your child’s high school

education, and for your support and prayers for the coming school year.

BOOK ORDERS

Books can now be ordered at MBS through the link

provided in both the email you received earlier this month

or by visiting the Brebeuf Jesuit homepage. Always be

sure to note teacher instructions in the third column.

Some instructors accept new books only, electronic books

only, or have other criteria. Be sure to have your students

schedule handy to reference course numbers.

these things, students are expected to make attending classes

a priority. A student loses out on valuable information and

time when not attending classes; therefore, their grades

may suff er. Please be mindful of this expectation and help

instill in our students that this is a priority for all of us.

Students who miss an extraordinary amount of classes can/

will be subject to reviews by the Dean and Principal, strict

attendance requirements and disciplinary probation (student

handbook). A student athlete also must be present at school

to take part in athletic contests.

STUDENT PARKINGStudents driving to school must have a Brebeuf parking tag

displayed on their car window. Students must register their

car with the Dean’s offi ce (license plate, car make and model)

and get a tag. Th e Dean’s Offi ce will be available on August 9

and 12 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. for parking registration.

STUDENT IDENTIFICATIONStudent ID photos will be taken on August 9 and August

12 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (with a break from 12:00 –

12:30 p.m.). Reminder: students must have a current year

ID with them as they enter school on their fi rst day.

CAFETERIA Brebeuf Jesuit has partnered with Aladdin Foods to manage

the school’s food service. Student favorites will continue to

be off ered along with some new additions, without much

change in price. Th e swipe card system remains intact and

the process for refi lling accounts at payforit.net has not

changed. Any questions or concerns should be directed to

Aimee Johnson, FSD 317.524.7004, or ajohnson@brebeuf.

org.

UNDERCLASSMEN PICTURESUnderclassmen pictures will be on August 15 in the MPR.

More information will be sent prior to that day.

YEARBOOKSTh e 2012-2013 Totem yearbook was distributed to students

in their lunch periods the week before fi nal exams, as well as before

and after school. If your student didn’t receive a yearbook, there

are still extras available. Listen to announcements the fi rst week

of school, or see Ms. Moore in the English offi ce to get your copy.

Th ere are many more copies of the 2011-2012 Totem that weren’t

picked up, so please feel free to get your copy of that, too. Due to

the overwhelming student response, yearbooks will consistently be

delivered pre-fi nal exams in May. Th is ensures students get the time-

honored tradition of signing well-wishes to their friends.

SENIOR PICTURESStudents in the class of 2014 are responsible for making an

appointment for their formal senior yearbook portrait. Students

must sit for this portrait by November 20, 2013. Yearbook pages

have to be submitted throughout the year each month, and our

schedule requires all school pictures in to the publisher by December.

We are unable to make exceptions to this deadline, so students who

fail to sit to sit for their portrait will not be included in the yearbook.

Prestige Portraits is our offi cial photographer, and there is a $15

sitting fee for yearbook portraits only (note: this fee will be waived if

you choose them for your personal senior photos, but you are under

no obligation to do so). Prestige will provide a shawl top for girls and

a tuxedo shirt, tie, and jacket for boys at the appointment to ensure

uniformity. Again, you must make and attend the appointment that

best fi ts your schedule. Fall openings fi ll up fast, and there can be no

exceptions to the deadline this year, so call today! Contact Prestige

via phone, 317.829.2088, or online at PrestigeIndiana.com. Please

email Ms. Hadley Moore, the yearbook instructor, at hmoore@

brebeuf.org if you have any questions or concerns.

SAFETY PROCEDURESIn our continuing eff ort to provide a safe and secure environment

for Brebeuf students, we collaborate with the Indiana School Safety

Specialists Academy and conform with best practices in monitoring

access to the building during the school day. At the beginning,

during, and at the end of the school day, students must enter and

exit the building through the Gym Lobby only. Th e single, East

Gym Lobby door opens at 7:00 a.m. Access before 7:00 a.m. must

be arranged with a staff member. Student IDs, acquired through the

Dean’s Offi ce, are required and must be presented to the Gym Lobby

prefect upon entering throughout the school day. Adult visitors enter

and register with the receptionist in the Main Lobby (west).
