Make an informed decision about feeding your baby
Howyoufeedyourbabywillbeoneofthemostimportantdecisionsyouwillmakeasaparent.Thisinformationcanhelpyoumakeaninformeddecisionandbeonyourwaytogivingyourbabyahealthystart.
Breast milk is all your baby needs for the first 6 months. Giving your baby other foods or liquids before 6 months may decrease your breast milk supply and may affect your baby’s health.
Breastfeeding

Note:Babiesunder6monthsoldshouldbeplacedontheirbackinacriborcradleclosetoyourbedwhenyouarereadytosleep.ItisimportantthatcribsandcradlesmeetcurrentCanadiansafetyregulations.

Get off to a good start
Breastfeedyourbabyimmediatelyafterbirth.Yourbabyisawakeandreadytolearnhowtobreastfeedduringthistime.Breastfeedingearlywillhelpyoutomakemorebreastmilk.
Inthefirstfewdaysyouwillproducebreastmilk(colostrum)thatis:
• thicklikehoney
• yellowincolour
• highincalories
• smallinamount(butallyourbabyneeds)
Asyoucontinuetobreastfeedoverthenextfewdays,yourbreastmilkwill:

Having your baby breastfeed well and often in the first week will help you to build a healthy breast milk supply.

Signs of hungerBabieswillletyouknowwhentheyarehungry;thefollowingaresignsthatyourbabyishungryandneedstobreastfeed.Yourbaby:

Donotgiveyourbabypacifiersorbottles.Babiesneedtolearnhowtosuckatthebreast.Ifyoumakeaninformeddecisiontousepacifiersorbottlesitisbesttowaituntilbreastfeedingiswellestablished,usuallyaround4-6weeks.
Vitamin DHealthCanadarecommendsgivingallbreastfedbabiesadailyVitaminDsupplement(10ugor 400IU),startingfrombirthtooneyearofage.
Breastfeed your baby when your baby is calm and before your baby is too hungry and crying.

Baby-led latching is a natural and simple way for your baby to find your breast.

Breastfeeding positions Therearemanydifferentpositionsforbreastfeeding.Herearesomebreastfeedingpositionsthatmayworkforyouandyourbaby.
Try different breastfeeding positions. Choose a breastfeeding position that allows you to be relaxed and comfortable. With all positions make sure your back and arms are well supported.

Latching your baby
Getcomfortableandfindapositionthatworkswellforyou(seeBreastfeeding positionsonpage9).
Makesurethatyouarecomfortablewithyourbackandarmswellsupportedandyourbaby’stummyisfacingyou(placeyourbabyonhersideexceptinthefootballposition–forthefootballposition,placeyourbabyonherbackorslightlyturnedtoyourbreast).
Holdyourbreastinyourhand.Thumbisontopandfingersarebelowyourbreast.
Faceyourbaby’snosetoyournipple.Strokeyourbaby’slowerlipwithyournipple.Waituntilbaby’smouthiswideopenlikeayawn.
Bringyourbaby,chinfirsttoyourbreast.Hermouthshouldcoverlotsofthedarkareabelowthenipple(about11/2inches).
Yourbabyislatchedproperlyonthebreastwhen:
• hermouthisopenedwide
• herlipsarecurledout
• herchinispressedintoyourbreast
• sheissuckingandswallowingbreastmilk
Having a good latch will help you make enough breast milk and help your baby to breastfeed well. It will also help prevent pain when breastfeeding.

Ifyourbabyfallsasleepwhilebreastfeeding,squeezeyourbreasttohelpthebreastmilkflow.Donotsqueezesohardthatithurts.Thiswillhelpyourbabytostartsuckingagain.
Alsotrytakingyourbaby’sclothesofforchangingherdiaper. Gentlymassageyourbaby’sback,feet,orhands.
Ifyouwanttotakeyourbabyoffyourbreast,breakthesuctionby:
• slippingyourfingerintothecornerofyourbaby’smouth,OR;
• pullingdownonyourbaby’schin.
Offerthesecondbreastwhenyourbabynolongerhasstrong“deepandslow”sucksandyourbreastsfeelsofter.Yourbabymayonlybreastfeedashorttimeonthesecondbreast.Atthenextbreastfeedingofferthebreastthatfeelsthefullest.

How to tell if your baby is getting enough breast milk
1. Your baby is breastfeeding well when…
You feel:
• yourbreastbeingpulledwithnopain
You hear:
• yourbabyswallowing(aquiet,exhaled“kaakaakaa”)
You see:
• awideopenmouth
• curledoutlips
• chinpressedintoyourbreasts
• suckingandswallowing(quickandshallowatthebeginninganddeepandslowasthebreastmilkstartstoflow)
Atthestartofthebreastfeedyourbabywillhaveshallowandquicksucks.Whenyourbreastmilkstartstoflow,thesucksshouldbecomedeepandslow.Thereshouldbeapauseduringthesuckingwhenyourbaby’smouthopenswidest.Yourbabyisdrinkingbreastmilkduringthispause.

4. Growth spurts
Growthspurtsarethetimesyourbabygrowsmorequicklyandwillneedmorebreastmilk.Thesespurtsoccurfrequentlyinthefirstfewmonths.Duringthesetimesbreastfeedmoreoftenwhenyourbabyseemshungry.Therearenosettimestobreastfeedyourbaby.Mostbabieswillbreastfeedatleast8timesin24hours(dayandnight).Yourbreastmilksupplywillincrease.
5. Other signs that your baby is breastfeeding well:

• baby’smouthiswetandpink
• baby’seyeslookalert
• babymovesactively
• babycomesoffthebreastlooking relaxedandsleepy

Get help right awayifyourbabyisnotshowingsignsofbreastfeedingwell.
Breastfeeding is a learned skill for mothers and babies. It requires patience and practice. Don’t hesitate to ask for help.

How to apply cold
Youcanputacoldcompressonyourbreastforafewminutes.Thiscanhelptodecreaseswelling.
Coldcompressescanbea:

How to apply warmth
Youcanputwarmthonyourbreastby:
• havingawarmshoweruntilbreastmilkstartstoflow

Warmthmayalsobeappliedtoyourbreastbyusinga:

Nextgentlymassageyourbreastsandexpresssomebreastmilkuntiltheareaaroundyournipplefeelssoft(seesectiononExpressing breast milkonpage17).Breastfeedyourbabyoftenuntilyourbreastsarenolongerhard.

Youcanexpressyourbreastmilkbyhandorbyusingabreastpump.Handexpressiontakestimetolearnbutwillbecomeeasierandfasterasyoupractice.Itinvolvesnocost,isalwaysavailableandcanbedoneanytime,anywhere.
How to express breast milk by hand
1. Washyourhandswithsoapandwater.
2. Ifyourbabyishealthy,usea“clean”glassorhardplastic(BPAfree)containertocollectyourexpressedbreastmilk.“Clean”meanstowashinhotsoapywater,rinsewellwithhotwaterandleavetoairdryonacleansurfaceawayfromwherefoodismade.
3. Tohelpbreastmilkbegintodrip,tryanyofthefollowing:
• placeawarmtowelonyourbreastforafewminutes
• gentlymassageyourbreasttowardsthenipple
• gentlyrollyournipplebetweenyourthumbandfinger
Expressing breast milk
Most women are able to express breast milk by hand.

4. Placeyourthumbandfirst2fingersalongtheouteredgeofthedarkarea(areola).
5. Pushyourthumband2fingersstraightbacktowardsyourchest.
6. Gentlycompressyourbreastusingyourthumbandfingersandrollfingerstowardsyournipple;thenrelaxyourfingers.
Repeat steps 4, 5 and 6 until the flow of breast milk slows down then switch to the other breast.
Tips for expressing breast milk• Expressinthemorning,whenyourbreastsfeelfullestorafterbreastfeedingyourbaby.
• Bepatient.Youmayonlygetafewdropsofbreastmilkwhenfirstlearningtoexpress.Expressingbreastmilkwillgetbetterandeasierwithpractice.
• Moveyourthumbandfingersindifferentpositionsaroundyournippletoensurethatallthebreastmilkductsareemptied.
• Switchbreastswhenevertheflowofbreastmilkslowsdown.
• Mostwomenareabletoexpressbreastmilkbyhand;howeveryoucanalsoexpressbreastmilkusingabreastpump.

Storing expressed breast milk
Containers for storing breast milk• Useglassorhardplastic(BPAfree)containerswithanair-tightlid(forexample,smalljarsandbottleswithlids).
• Specialbreastmilkfreezerbagscanalsobeused.
• Do not usebottlelinerbags.Thesearethinnerplasticbagsthatmaybreakwhenfrozen.
Cleaning the containersWashcontainersinhotsoapywaterandrinsewellwithhotwater.Letthecontainersairdryonadrycleansurfaceawayfromwherefoodismade.
* Ifyourbabyispremature(borntooearly)orinthehospital,speaktoyournurseaboutstoring breastmilkandcleaningcontainers.Sterilizedcontainersmaybeprovidedbythehospital.

Thawing frozen breast milk
1. Checkthedateonthestoredbreastmilk.Usethecontainerwiththeearliestdatefirst.
2. Thawfrozenbreastmilkbyleavingitintherefrigeratorfor4-24hours.
3. Placecontainerundercoolwaterrunning.Onceithasbeguntothaw,runwarmwatertofinishthawing.
4. Neverthawatroomtemperature.
5. Warmbreastmilkbyplacingthecontainerinabowlofverywarmwaterfornomorethan15minutes.
6. Donotthaworheatbreastmilkinthemicrowave.Donotrefreezeonceithasthawed.
OR
Do not refreeze breast milk once it has started to thaw.
