After the tests and having the result double checked, she was devastated to find out the diagnosis was indeed breast cancer. What a shock! What am I going to do? Why me? These were just some of her initial thoughts. Jo underwent the trauma of six months of chemotherapy, a lumpectomy and then radiotherapy. Remaining optimistic and staying focused, Jo didn’t let it stop her doing anything and after the initial battle, Jo recovered fully. Such awful news to hear then that at the next check-up breast cancer was found again in the scar tissue from the previous operation. There was such a lot to take in from the consultation. An overload of medical information, but Jo would remain motivated and resolute, not afraid, keeping a fighting spirit and complete faith in the professionals who were guiding her through those agonising and difficult decisions. Treatment included a full mastectomy and reconstruction followed by another six months of chemotherapy. She concentrated on being positive and was determined to make a full recovery, which she did again. Jo hasn’t let the experience change her. She has continued to remain strong throughout, but it really has highlighted the importance of her making the most out of every day. She now has an annual mammogram and MRI scan. “So much has happened and I’m so grateful to be here.” With the help of various charities and donations, more women than ever are surviving breast cancer. The problem is that more women are being diagnosed than ever before. Breast Cancer Now is the UK’s largest breast cancer charity and aims to do the following to fight this devastating disease: By focusing on four key areas - risk and prevention, early detection and diagnosis, treatment, and the elimination of secondary breast cancer, they believe their research will allow them to achieve their ambitions and stop breast cancer from continuing to take lives. They aim to carefully select and find the most relevant research and currently support almost 400 researchers and fund 105 research grants, which are worth over £26 million at over 30 institutes around the UK. Breast Cancer Now plan on changing the statistics. They believe that with our help they can stop women dying from Breast Cancer by 2050. Jo has worked at Sealey for 34 years and is a hugely popular and influential member of the team.In 2009 she found a lump.

Breast Cancer Now is the UK’s largest breast cancer charity and aims to do the following to fight this devastating disease:

KEV’S STORY JUSTGIVING

“Never feel too embarrassed to ask for advice or get any unexpected symptoms checked out” says Kevin who works at Sealey. “It was so difficult for me to watch my Grandad, who was such a healthy man for so many years, deteriorate after his diagnosis when he was 74 years old. He was such a kind-hearted man who fostered children for over 40 years, helped with Meals on Wheels and was an active member of his community. He would always go that extra mile for people, regardless of time or effort.” Barry sadly passed away from this dreadful disease.

It was such a shock when Grandad was told he had cancer. He was so scared and anxious about the future and what would happen to him. He had information about eating a healthy balanced diet, being active, setting realistic goals and generally looking after himself properly towards the end. Prostate Cancer UK supported Grandad when he had to make some really difficult decisions about his treatment by encouraging him to talk openly about his concerns. This helped my family cope and understand everything he was dealing with. They were so knowledgeable and sympathetic. We really wanted to give something back to the charity so my Uncle ran a marathon for their cause!”

Kevin wants to highlight the symptoms of this horrible disease and make sure everyone is aware. Only men have a prostate gland. Prostate cancer can develop when cells in the prostate start to grow in an uncontrolled way. Prostate cancer often grows slowly to start with and may never cause any problems. However, some men have prostate cancer that is more likely to spread. This needs treatment to stop it spreading outside the prostate. Any visible change should be checked out by your GP.

The charity Prostate Cancer UK has a simple ambition – to stop men dying from prostate cancer. Through shifting the science over the next 10 years to focus on radical improvements in prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and support, they want to stop prostate cancer being a killer.

Let’s make this a disease of the past.

Prostate Cancer currently kills 10,000 men a year, and by 2030 it is predicted to be the most common of all cancers in the UK.

Prostate Cancer UK has a plan to stop prostate cancer being a killer, by not only finding better ways to diagnose and treat it, but also looking at its prevention. With over 330,000 UK men needing support with the disease, we want to help.

An ambitious 10 year strategy sets out how Prostate Cancer UK will invest in the most innovative research to help improve their knowledge of prostate cancer. By doing this, it aids them in detecting and treating the disease more efficiently, at every stage. It is also imperative for them to develop a personalised approach for every man suffering from prostate cancer to achieve the best outcome.

75p in every pound is spent directly on the objectives mentioned above. The remaining 25p is reinvested in fundraising and to continue the efficient running of the organisation. For every £1 donated from fundraising, Prostate Cancer UK are able to generate a further £5 to continue the fight against this terrible disease.

With our support, Prostate Cancer UK want to see fewer men dying.

We selected this range of pink tools, with the aim of raising a combined £40,000 divided between these two incredible charities. As well as buying tools, you can also make a donation to either of the charities, via our justgiving website.
