October 2021

Kim Radford joins us as General Manager bringing with her a wealth of experience. She commenced her role on August 30th and is now meeting all her staff and familiarising herself with current policies and the management of our unique community.

Next month’s edition will formally introduce her but until then, Kim was asked in her first few days on the job, “What are you looking forward to most about being part of this community?”

Besides coming out of lockdown and seeing the site alive and vibrant.  I would have to say, what I am most looking forward to is the new challenge that this role will bring, as well as being able to use my experience to make a difference to the team and the community.  I feel that I can provide some structure and support to the team, implement some governance, system and process to the way the organisation operates and provides services to the community at Breakfast Point.

I am looking forward to meeting the Breakfast Point community members in due course and hearing why they enjoy living at Breakfast Point.

Welcome to our New General Manager

By Contract Manager, Aaron Spedding

Spring is finally upon us! We have already started to notice the new growth emerging around site and already seeing the flushes of flowers in the beautiful gardens.

COVID-19 has continued to be a constant struggle, with many NSW Health regulations restricting staff numbers onsite over the month and forcing Green Options to prioritise the important seasonal works. Preparing our turf surfaces for Spring will continue to be one of our main priorities, reducing the height for a cleaner and healthier surface in Summer. Multiple weed outbreaks have not gone unnoticed and are highlighting the requirement of pre-emergent herbicides to be applied which have been missed in the past. A final spray was completed in early September to remove the weeds around the foreshore and waterfront areas and then a pre-emergent will be applied to prevent summer weeds germinating. Major renovations remain booked in for October, which we cannot wait to begin.

Mulching of selected gardens onsite has seen an immediate improvement to the gardens around site, while applying a

small amount to locations which have not received a top up for some time. Irrigation will be increased to allow for the warmer days, monitoring the system for leaks and concerns.

Restrictions are beginning to ease for maintenance crews onsite, with regulations and rules allowing us to begin returning to the non-essential maintenance which may have been missed during lockdown.

Green Options would like to thank everyone in Breakfast Point for their patience and assistance during this challenging time.

Executive Team Report The official publication of the Breakfast Point Community Association DP 270347

In 2020 the Breakfast Point Community Association formed a project team to investigate electric vehicle (EV) charging stations for residents of Breakfast Point.

The team endeavours to provide general information on various EV charging solutions to building strata and owners corporations. There is also an investigation underway to assess options for community charging for Breakfast Point residents.

Since our previous survey 12 months ago, there has been greater interest in the uptake of electric vehicles. The team would like to build a register of current and prospective EV owners in Breakfast Point. This information will inform and help provide direction of EV charging requirements for your strata and the community.

If you already have, or are looking to

purchase an EV, please visit https://ev.breakfastpoint.info and follow the link to the EV owner register.

This website also provides further information for Strata wishing to evaluate EV charging options for their building. The project team is available via your Community Association Representative to assist Strata Executives in identifying which options may apply to individual buildings.

Electric Vehicles in Breakfast Point

The Community Association Executive Committee has had an eventful twelve months and as we work towards the Annual General Meeting in late October, we felt it important to share some of the major initiatives achieved in 2021 (a pandemic year):

• Employed a General Manager to strategically manage the operations of the community

• Completed a comprehensive irrigation audit of the site and developed a repair workplan.

• Implemented the recommendations of the Tree Management Plan for 2021.

• Improved many of the estate gardens and established a new garden behind Manor Homes

• Approved a proposal for the installation of solar energy systems

• Approved a proposal for the repair of the seawall.

• Approved proposal for water harvesting project

• Approved an Electric Vehicle (EV) charging policy.

• Repainted and completed the enhancement of the Country Club with the

installation of the front entrance canopy • Approved the underpinning of sections of

the Heritage wall on Tennyson Road.• Revised the

CA website to give a fresher appearance, easier navigation and include limited advertising.

• Participated in traffic safety initiatives for the Mortlake Peninsula, working with Canada Bay Council.

• Issued a new tender for cleaning services throughout the Estate and completed tenders for CA electricity and gas contracts, with significant savings achieved.

• Organised town planning and legal advice to clarify permitted hiring and uses of Community facilities.

• Reviewed and approved new Club membership fees for residents of our Original Communities.

• Resolved the Mulberry Hill meeting room and office matter.

Your Executive Committee:• David Button Treasurer • Sue Campbell-Lloyd AM Secretary• Richard Cowan Member • Laurie Ihnativ Member• Kerryanne Knox Member

Opening Our AmenitiesThe community welcomed the opening of our Tennis Courts at the Country Club with some restrictions as per the NSW Health guidelines and the information available from Tennis Australia.

Breakfast Point residents were welcomed back to use the courts from Monday to Saturday beginning in September and all guidelines were published on the CA website. Checking in using QR codes is essential and no social group tennis or coaching was allowed.

Single players could access the court for a game and players were asked to adhere to the timeframe and to the social distancing guidelines. As the club was not open, toilet amenities were not available.

The progressive opening of all of the amenities at the club as well as the Bayview dining and bar areas will be guided by NSW Health orders and will be strongly in favour of double vaccinated members using the facilities.

Walks around Breakfast Point...Have you tried these suggestions?• Have you walked from Cabarita Wharf along the foreshore,

past Barnwell Park Golf club to Abbotsford (9 km easy walk and catch the ferry home!)

• Catch the punt to Putney and walk along foreshore down to Huntleys Point. Catch the ferry back to Cabarita – easy walk.

• Have you visited the Yaralla Estate Concord – easy walk from Market Street (2 km and about 25 minutes)

During Spring we will be slowly returning to some normality based on the advice of the NSW Government. But, until that happens, we asked some of the groups that are operating in BP to tell us how they have coped with the lockdown.THE EARLY LEARNING CENTRE, BREAKFAST POINTThanks Jayne for your story…

Managing a room full of young children can be delightful. But, it can also be hard and can take a lot of energy and patience.

Add COVID 19 into the mix and our day to day challenges become quite a big mountain to climb. Whilst early childhood centres have been asked to remain open and operating there was no early vaccine on offer to educators working in the industry. The anxiety felt by our team has been quite high especially knowing that this Delta strain was affecting more and more younger people. Yet our educators have presented every day with a smile on their face knowing that they are not protected as were other front line workers. We are so proud of our educators.

It is a blessing to work with children at this time, they bring a lot of joy to our working lives with their unique perspective on their surroundings. The children thankfully seem to have taken COVID in their stride and are now all comfortable with face masks, constant handwashing and keeping our distance. Coming to childcare provides the children with invaluable social interaction and a welcome environment where they can learn and play.

I asked the kids how COVID 19 had affected them:“I want to see my grandmother” Zachary“I want to go to the water slide” Antonio“if the virus was an animal it would be a big scary one” Ryne“we need to all get vaccinated to stop it” Callum“I want to go to the park with my friends” Jude

We are looking forward to the day when we can get back out into the beautiful Breakfast Point community and continue to pursue our beyond the gate program.

PROBUS CLUBSThe importance of staying connected was recognised early by the Probus Clubs particularly as the membership of these groups

have catered for a lot of residents who find themselves on their own in their ageing years.

BREAKFAST POINT PROBUS – What would we do without Zoom? It has enabled weekly meetings to be held, a card group using the Trickster 500 app to play against friends and the art class to continue to hone their skills in drawings and even a watercolour class! Zoom has also connected the Book Club and they have enjoyed their discussions over a glass of wine or a cuppa!

No Zoom necessary for the cycling groups to continue to exercise but they had to alter routes when the 5km restrictions were introduced!

CABARITA AND BREAKFAST POINT PROBUS – Virtual meetings every fortnight have kept the members in touch but a weekly virtual morning tea has been a great success. Always concerned about the welfare of their members, there is a welfare person who is always keen to hear if anybody needs a phone call, some shopping done or an online chat. Their Book Club, Wine Appreciation and Photography groups have kept going to the delight of their members.

Both clubs have offered some recommendations for books : • Book of Lost Names by Kristin Harmel. • The Shelly Bay Ladies Swimming Club by

Sophie Green• Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell• The Music Bees by Eileen Garvin• Tales of Otori (5 Book Series) by Lan

Hearn• The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

COFFEE COFFEE COFFEEWhat would we do without it? The Olive Kitchen, Upper Crust Boulangerie and the cafes on the peripheral of BP have been very busy providing coffee, tea and juice.

Thomas, a favourite barista from Upper Crust Boulangerie, commented that they are all appreciative of the support from our community and he can make up to 350 cups of coffee a day…even in this COVID time. Another example of our community supporting our local businesses.

IGAThe IGA has been the centre of our universe during the lockdown with no shortage of any of the great products that are offered there. A chat with the manager, Adam, told us what a challenging time this has been for them… “one of the hardest times I ever imagined.” He was quick to point out that it has been difficult monitoring mask wearing and Service NSW checking in as not all

people in our community have been as responsible as we would have liked. The IGA has supported the community during this time providing us with a close and reliable supermarket. Adam was assured that the majority of BP people are aware of the challenges that were faced by the staff and we would like to thank them all for their commitment and smiling faces even when they were met with hostility! Thanks IGA staff, we appreciate you.

BREAKFAST POINT PHARMACYThe COVID safety rules were quickly installed here and Laila only closed those doors for one day! This service has been amazing as there a lot more medications, ails and medical issues occurring other than COVID 19…life with all of its challenges just keeps going on! Thanks BP Pharmacy …we look forward to browsing and chatting in the near future!

MEN’S SHED BREAKFAST POINTTwice weekly meetings on Zoom have connected the members of this organisation with a weekly coffee morning and a “Thank God It’s Friday” session. This has ensured the engagement of members in social chat and checking on each others’ welfare. They are looking forward to getting back into their usual routine and, in particular, continuing to support Concord Hospital as well as other charities.

ROTARYThis international charity has a strong focus on community support and Breakfast Point Rotary epitomises this belief. As well as Zoom meetings and Zoom social nights with virtual dinners and games nights they have been developing a project that has been sponsored by a very generous donor from our Breakfast Point community. This project is the Youth Project supporting Aboriginal Health Education in Western Sydney. When lockdown is over, this project will be ready for action!

Unfortunately, the Art Show that all Breakfast Point residents look forward to has had to be postponed until early 2022.

Community Website Spring RefreshOur new website is looking fabulous. We’ve given it a spring refresh by updating the layout and presentation while we were making room for some limited advertising from local businesses. We have had some initial comments about the visual appeal of our new website with lots of useful information on Breakfast Point and its many social and recreational activities. We’ve all missed these during the long COVID lockdown and look forward to get back to something resembling normality . As we start to introduce things and open up our Community Club, check regularly on the announcements page. Check it out at https://breakfastpoint.info
