GREETINGS FROMOUR BO RD CHAIR

Howdy! On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Brazos Valley Economic Development Corporation, I appreciate you taking a look back at a great calendar year for this organization. I know my fellow board members would agree that it is a privilege to serve our community in this capacity.
The mission and the slogan at the BVEDC is Launch, Grow, Locate. Led by our staff team, we are assisting entrepreneurs in the launch of their companies. We are helping the amazing existing businesses in our community to grow. And we are aggressively recruiting companies to locate in “The Hub of the Texas Triangle.” The work being done each day fuels the engine of our fast-growing economy and creates quality jobs for our fast-growing population.
This work cannot be accomplished without the entities, companies and individuals who have invested in the BVEDC. Brazos County, the Cities of College Station and Bryan, and Texas A&M University are our Category I funding partners. Their significant financial contributions, combined with their guidance and collaboration, are essential to making the community we share even greater. In addition, our Invest Brazos Valley group of private investors had a banner year. More and more local companies are recognizing the importance of growing our economy and finding value in what the BVEDC has to offer them. Our investors deserve a huge thank you for making the Brazos Valley greater.
It is an incredible time to call this place home. Never before have we had such a vibrant business community and quality of life, and our trajectory is only heading upward. With continued thanks to our investors, please enjoy this high level overview of the work done in 2019 by our organization.

Invest Brazos Valley is the BVEDC’s private sector voice. It offers the opportunity for public and private leaders to work together to advance the economic development of our community as a single marketplace.
2019 saw tremendous achievement and growth in IBV. For Fiscal Year 2019, the group’s income exceeded its budget for the first time. At FY19’s end, there were 49 members investing at either the Leadership Council ($5,000) or Visionary ($2,500) levels, along with one lifetime member. The total of IBV investors is a new high for the BVEDC, and includes 10 new members which were brought on board in FY19.
IBV continued to grow through the end of the 2019 calendar year. The first quarter of FY20, which began October 1, saw the addition of five new members.

BR ZOS VALLEYBUSINESS SUMMITThe 2019 edition of the BVEDC’s Brazos Valley Business Summit was held September 29 at the Texas A&M Hotel and Conference Center. A series of presentations and panel discussions touched on a wide range of topics, and networking sessions provided opportunities to create and strengthen working relationships. The keynote presentation was from heralded business and pitch coach Chris Westfall.
ECONOMICDEVELOPMENTSTR TEGYThe beginning of 2019 marked the final stretch in the development of the Brazos Valley Economic Development Strategy. The process, which started in August 2018, concluded with input from the local steering committee made up of approximately 40 community and business leaders, development and review of the five-year strategy by Market Street Services, and creation of an implementation plan.
By the end of the year, a coordinating council was formed to carry out the implementation. Action teams were also formed to address and act upon aspects of the six pillars of the strategy.

INTERN TIONAL
INTERNATIONAL MISSIONS TO THE BRAZOS VALLEYThese missions leverage U.S.-based industry exhibitions to offset foreign travel to network with targeted countries. The March, May and October 2019 missions below were organized on the U.S. side by Texas A&M Technology Commercialization and the BVEDC. Both are members of the Open Worldwide Innovation Network (OWIN).
March: Organized by Belgium’s Wallonia Foreign Trade and Investment Agency (AWEX, also an OWIN member), a group of business leaders made the short trip from Austin’s South by Southwest event to spend time in Bryan/College Station and on the campus of Texas A&M University.
May: Belgian economic development agency IDELUX-AIVE organized a delegation, which was made up of mainly small tech companies from the country’s Luxembourg province.
August: The Brazos Valley welcomed administrators of the Wałbrzych Special Economic Zone “INVEST - PARK,” a government organization that operates a subzone in the Greater Poland Province. Texas A&M AgriLife coordinated with the BVEDC on the U.S. side of this mission.
October: More than 60 people from three countries representing more than 30 companies, universities and organizations were part of the visit to explore research and business opportunities. It was one of the largest international business missions to Aggieland.

PROJECTS IN 2019Out of 75 Total Projects
2019 sustained our region’s momentum in attracting global business and capital investment opportunities. There continues to be growing statewide recognition of the Brazos Valley as a gateway to the U.S. marketplace, and with the BVEDC’s award-winning International Gateway program and its expansion of professional service firms, more foreign companies are taking a look at The Hub of the Texas Triangle for opportunities.

ECONOMICINDIC TORS
2019 marked the first full calendar year of “Economic Indicators,” the monthly report compiled by Texas A&M University’s Private Enterprise Research Center and sponsored by the BVEDC. All the reports are available at brazosvalleyedc.org.
The graph below is the College Station-Bryan Business-Cycle Index from the February 2020 report, which is based on economic statistics from December 2019. The index is based at 100 in 2001, so the local economy has essentially doubled in that timeframe.
Comparing indexes of the four major metropolitan areas in the state and Texas as a whole, the index of the CS-B metro trails only Austin’s when it comes to economy growth since 2001.
